Here is a news item I thought I would pass along, maybe someone doing research in Mich. or researching the name SPALDING might be interested in this. If you have information about this person, you might try and contact Officer Sam Hartung. You might want to pass this article around to other researchers. Sincerely, Mike Creps Here is the article: Civil War Vet's Headstone Saved PITTSFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) -- The piece of stone awaiting recycling bore a strange inscription, one spotted by a sharp-eyed worker. It read: J.H. Spalding Co.K. 18 MICH.INF It was a Civil War-era tombstone. Since its discovery a month ago, police Officer Sam Hartung has tried to chronicle the history of the headstone and the life of J.H. Spalding. The 4-foot-tall, 1-foot-wide, 6-inch-deep headstone was being used as the bottom step of a porch and was taken to the City Concrete Crushing after the porch was dismantled, Hartung said. Company K of the 18th Michigan Infantry, which is what the inscription refers to, existed from 1862 to 1865. Veterans Affairs records show company member Julius H. Spalding was not killed in the Civil War. He lived in nearby Exeter Township and is believed to have died in the 1890s. Hartung is not sure where the veteran was buried, but hopes eventually to return the headstone. ``Our department wants this man to be honored,'' Hartung said.
