My ancestor lived in Berne Twp in Fairfield Co. I have the property records that show where he sold his land, but not where he actually bought the land in the first place. I was puzzled, but then I realized the Fairfield wasn't the original county, so the purchase may appear in Ross or Washington County. My question is which one? Which county was Berne Twp in before Fairfield Co. was formed. Lori
Lori I believe it was Washington but the formation of Fairfield predates the State of Ohio by 3 years; so you're looking around the time of the Northwest territory and the original land grant records. Irrespective of which county Berne township came from originally, the records, if they still exist, SHOULD now be in Fairfield. The records for the land generally moved to the new county being formed. Maybe I can find something at the library or the Fairfield County branch of the Ohio Genealogical Society next time I'm down there. What name are you looking for and what piece of property?
