I thought others might like to see the response I got from the OHS. I found it very helpful. I did not know that the Ohio History Journal was online. Beverly Carter [email protected] Thank you for contacting the Ohio Historical Society. We do not have a definitive list of all of the epidemics that have swept across the state in Ohio's history. Even so, our online version of the Ohio History journal has several articles concerning disease, medicine, and doctors in the state. I recommend that you review these articles for an overview of some of the wide spread diseases that have been recorded in Ohio's history. You can access the "D" section of the Ohio History index to see a list of articles about disease at the link http://publications.ohiohistory.org/ohstemplate.cfm?action=index&letter= D Under the index heading for Disease, I recommend first looking at the article titled "The Decline of Epidemics in Ohio" by Robert G. Paterson. Page 322 of the article specifically refers to a typhoid epidemic in Ohio between 1840 to 1842. The article does not go into a great deal of detail about the typhoid epidemic. There is some discussion of typhoid in general in Ohio on pages 325-326 of the article. Please keep in mind that localized outbreaks of disease could also kill many members of a family. It is not always a statewide epidemic that results in the loss of many people in a short period of time. If you are researching a specific area of Ohio, you may wish to contact the libraries and genealogical society there. They may be able to provide you with information about the local history of disease and/or general information about people who lived in the area. A list of Fairfield County libraries is available at http://www.oplin.lib.oh.us/libsearch.php?Id=28&search=&msg= Contact information for the Fairfield County Genealogical Society is available at http://www.ogs.org/chapters/chapters3.php If you would like to find out what kinds of items we have in our library concerning epidemics in Ohio, I suggest looking at our Online Collection Catalog (see http://www.ohiohistory.org/occ/menu.htm ).
