I have obtained Civil War records on several of my ancestors from the National Archives in Washington, DC. The NARA has a web site where you can order the free forms. You do not need to know everything - just enough so that they can find the record. Name, death date and place, age at death, state, etc will probably be enough. They let you know if they find the file and give you 45 days to send the money and they will send the report to you. They only charge for the report; they do not charge you for searching their files.
