    2. Dear Joyce and Larry, Thank you so much for finding that article. I'm not sure how that Jacob Stuter is related to my Jacob Stuter though. According to family history he died around 1849. 1850 and his wife Harriet went to work for John Bright on Havensport Road, Baltimore, OH which was Basil Ohio I believe. Her three children were farmed out to friends and relatives and then she married John Bright and brought her three children to work on the farm. Harriet married John Bright and had two daughters by John Bright. She is buried in the Bright cemetery on the property. Jacob Stuter was said to have died in Thurston but I can't find a grave, a death certificate. I did find land records and the 1840 census which shows him and Harriet together at that time. He has alluded me for years now, so he's my brick wall. If the article is my Jacob Stuter then he and Harriet were divorced before 1850 and a family secret would be uncovered. The descendants of the two daughters knew nothing and I shared with them. I even old pictures of the house on Havensport Road and I have visited Harriet's grave. I just can't believe I can't find anything else on Jacob. Thanks, Bonnie Morris Conrad Houston, Texas **************Wondering what's for Dinner Tonight? 3. Thanks any way. It's kind of mysterious. They both 1st appear at their marriage record found and then Isaac is on the 1840 Census. He disappears after that, so I assume he died. She had remarried by 1850 and by 1860, at least some of the kids are living with her mother. John, my ancestor, stayed in Violet Twp. and died after 1900. His son, William moved his family to Akron about 1911 where he was killed in 1923. I've no idea where Isaac came from, or who his parents were. 3. Thank you for the info about the Beery book. There are two online at Ancestry, the history of Abraham Beery and the history of the descendants of Nicholas Beery. I believe I may have found the Samuel that matches mine in the latter book. Unfortunately, it doesn't have much information on him. This is the quote: In the History of Jacob & Christian Beery, 3rd part; pg 485 of History of Nicholas Beery "No. 110 Third Generation. 74. Samuel Beery, born in Fairfield county, Ohio, -------married Rachael Medlock ---------. They were Lutheran and lived east of Lancaster, Fairfield Co., Ohio. They were buried at Lancaster cemetery. Had four or five children, not reported." No. 74, Samuel's father, is Christian Beery b 26 Jun 1777 in Adams Co., PA d d 15 Oct 1836 Fairfield Co., OH m Catharine Frank. Both are buried in Spanogle cemetery at Rush Creek. They migrated from Rockingham Co., VA to Fairfield Co., OH about 1805. This is what I know about this Samuel. He was b about 1800 in VA. He married..."On pages 182-3, Wiseman lists some weddings, including "Samuel Beery to Mrs. Ann Matlack, mother of Mrs. Judge Biddle of Indiana, August 1, 1840 by Rev. William Cox". I believe that Ann was Ann Jones b abt 1806 VA to John Jones & Margaret Hollenback, as I found a brief obit for Margaret stating she died in the home of her daughter, Ann Beery in June 1870, and was buried in the Lutheran Cemetery. Does anyone know if the records for the Lutheran Church still exist? If so, where? My research interest lies with the descendants of John & Margaret [Hollenback] Jones. I have 3 children listed as children of Samuel Beery & Ann: 1. Charles A. b abt 1844 and by 1880 moved to Chilicothe, Ross Co., OH. His mother Ann Beery was enumerated with him. 2. Lawrence W. Beery b abt 1850 3. Sarah - I'm not sure she was their child. She was not listed on the 1850 census in their household. She was b abt 1846. She shows up with them in 1860, age 14. Please pardon my tardy reply. I have been going through my stash of papers that I brought home from a recent genealogy trip to IN and IL. I sure wish I had had this information during that trip, as one of my stops was in Logansport, Cass Co., IN. There is a small group of researchers trying to trace the descendants of Thomas Hollenback b abt 1745, place unknown. Thomas had 14 children, all of whom lived to have at least one child. Nancy Jones Beery's mother, Margaret Jones was a child of Thomas. Two of Margaret's brothers, John and George Hollenback also spent some time in Fairfield Co., OH. Both migrated west, first George to Hancock Co., OH, then John to Cass Co., IN. It would make sense that John's niece might also move there. All of John's children appear to have migrated with him, except one, his son Edmond. Edmond married Mary Catherine Bucher in Fairfield in 1837. They remained until her father Jacob died, then they joined the others in Cass Co., IN. It's fairly easy to get the males in our group to track those named Hollenback. Wiseman, published in 1898. The book is available for viewing on both Heritage Quest and ancestry.com. The book has a brief biography of what seems to be the Samuel Beery you're looking for on pages 310-311. The bio is primarily his business history, but it does say he was born in Virginia and came to Ohio in 1805 and became a resident of Lancaster in 1819. He died in 1867 after a painful illness. On pages 182-3, Wiseman lists some weddings, including "Samuel Beery to Mrs. Ann Matlack, mother of Mrs. Judge Biddle of Indiana, August 1, 1840 by Rev. William Cox" Some research on the Website of the Ohio Genealogical Society uncovered a marriage between Samuel Matlack and Nancy Jones in Oct. 1823. It is not beyond reason that a woman might be known as both Ann and Nancy. If this isn't the right marriage, Samuel had a brother named John who could be researched. According to page 346 and 347 of the Centenial History, John died in 1834 and Samuel moved to Indiana in 1838 and died a year later. Although I was not able to pin down for certain the name of Judge (Horace P.) Biddle's wife (they were separated for most of their marriage), I think I found her in the 1860 census for Cass County, Ind. as Ann M.M. Biddle and in 1870 as Anna Maria Biddle. Both have her birth date as circa 1822. If she is Ann Jones Beery's daughter, it is by Ann's first marriage to a Matlack. As for Samuel Beery, I am unable to place him with certainty in the extensive Beery family of Fairfield County. However, Wiseman says in another book (Pioneer Period and Pioneer People of Fairfield County, Ohio) that Samuel is an unspecified relative of Nicholas Beery, the patriarch of the Fairfield County Beerys. My personal guess is that Samuel is a son of Christian Beery (nephew of Nicholas) and Catherine Frank. But that is only a guess. -- Karl Seitz >I have a Beery family from Fairfield Co. 2. Jacob Stuter born before or abt. 1820 died before 1850 Thurston, Ohio. He married Harriet Chamberlain May 21, 1839. Every researcher has a brick wall that at one time in their years of research allude their efforts to trace a family member. This brick wall continues as the years drag on with no futher information about him coming to light. Every day new transcriptions are opening up and different records are made available to break down brick walls for people. More and more of us help each other. Is there anyone out there who lives in the Thruston, OH area or has information on that area that could check out Jacob Stuter for me. I have the census from 1840 showing him and Harriet living together both twenty and under thirty. I have information showing he got a land grand: Name: Jacob Stuter Land Office: ZANESVILLE Document Number: 8049 Total Acres: 80 Signature: Yes Canceled Document: No Issue Date: 1 Apr 1837 Metes and Bounds: No Statutory Reference: 3 Stat. 566 Multiple Warantee Names: No Act or Treaty: April 24, 1820 Multiple Patentee Names: No Entry Classification: Sale-Cash Entries Land Description: 1 W½NW US MILITARY SURVEY No 4 N 6 W 21 ----------------------------- While reading I found this info on the Ohio Historical site: Cholera struck Columbus in 1849, producing a panic in the city. Columbus is very close to Baltimore, OH. He was my gr-gr-grandfather and I would love to find him after all these years.
