    3. I am not from OH so I can't comment on where White's Addition might be but as to your first question; Find A Grave is a work in progress. Some kind soul walked these graveyards, photographed and recorded the history for those of us who can not do so ourselves. I would recommend you keep checking the site.............I have found the site is constantly being updated. -----Original Message----- From: ohfairfi-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:ohfairfi-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of gc-gateway@rootsweb.com Sent: Monday, November 17, 2008 8:28 PM To: OHFAIRFI-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [OHFAIRFI] Grant Clark This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. 3. I live in Michigan so we have been without money and jobs much longer than the rest of the states. My suggestions to the governors and state employees is to take a pay cut as many real people have done. Maybe wouldn't restore everything but sure would make you think they thought they weren't above it. Tootsie Shoemaker ----- Original Message ----- From: "Sheila Thomas" <sthomas@ohiocpa.net> To: <OHFAIRFI@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, November 17, 2008 7:58 AM Subject: [OHFAIRFI] Some historic sites to close temporarily Budget pinch puts historic sites on hiatus 11/17/2008, 12:00 a.m. ET By JAMES HANNAH The Associated Press WAPAKONETA, Ohio (AP) - Houston, we have a problem. Neil Armstrong's spacesuits, a capsule he piloted, the long johns James Lovell wore on the aborted Apollo 13 moon mission and other artifacts in the museum named for Armstrong will be off-limits to the public for one week this spring because of budget cuts. Ditto for President Warren Harding's Marion home and tomb in central Ohio and Fort Meigs, a log structure built on the Maumee River in 1813 to protect northwest Ohio and Indiana from invading British soldiers. Several states are temporarily closing historic sites as the slowdown in the economy, higher unemployment and turmoil in the national financial markets hurt tax revenues. History buffs are unhappy that such live links to heritage will be removed from view, even if only for a short time. And some worry that the one-week hiatus from history is only the beginning. William Laidlaw Jr., executive director of the Ohio Historical Society, regrets the move, saying it is necessary to avoid layoffs. "The real stuff of history is found in the stories, artifacts and places that give meaning to the past," he said. "There is no substitute for that. Preserving access to these resources is the most important thing we do." In all, 14 of Ohio's 58 historic sites will be closed the week of March 28. In Illinois, 13 of the state's 28 historic sites will be shut down at the end of November through at least June unless Gov. Rod Blagojevich approves proposed funding to keep them open. Of the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency's 90 workers, 32 will be laid off. Yearly attendance at the states' sites slated for closure ranged from 4,381 visitors to 100,371. The Arizona Historical Society has closed the research library at its museum in Tempe and sharply reduced hours at the research library in Tucson. "This wasn't something we wanted to do," said Blagojevich spokesman Brian Williamsen. "But in the end it was the responsible decision that had to be made given that there was a budget in front of us that didn't have the revenue." Many states dealing with falling revenues are projecting budget deficits of 2 percent to 3 percent. Illinois closed a handful of historic sites in the early 1990s due to budget cuts. The current cuts are coming as the state is preparing a high-profile celebration of the 200th birthday of native son Abraham Lincoln, although money was found to keep most of the Lincoln sites open and expand hours at some. The Lincoln Log Cabin near Charleston, the reconstructed cabin Lincoln's father built which had nearly 83,000 visitors in 2007, would be a casualty, however. "This couldn't come at a worse time," said Erik Hostetter, a union official who organized a 60-person protest outside the governor's mansion in September. "It's a pretty mindless, stupid way to balance the budget." States around the nation are making tough budget decisions. In Mississippi, cuts are being made to the arts commission and corrections department. New York Gov. David Paterson is calling for cuts in the growth in school aid and for an increase in tuition at state colleges. Historic sites are easy budget-cutting targets because there are so many of them and they are so visible, said Terry Davis, president of the American Association for State and Local History. "It's going on everywhere," Davis said. "Nobody is quite sure - long term - what all of this means." The Ohio Historical Society had 417 full-time equivalent jobs in 2001. Today, there are 270. The society's budget will be cut 4.75 percent this fiscal year, which ends June 30. The money troubles may persist. The Ohio Office of Budget and Management has told the organization to prepare hypothetical budgets for 2010 and 2011 with a further 10 percent funding reduction. In Arizona, the governor's office has asked the historical society to show what the consequences would be of an additional 7.5 percent budget cut. To save money and preserve access, the Ohio group has established local partnerships for the operation of 29 historic sites and plans to accelerate that process. But the society reduced access at the 29 sites it manages by two days a week this year, which cut into admissions, parking fees and merchandise sales. Host towns are hurt by closings and reduced hours. "For a lot of these smaller communities, these historic sites were huge income generators," said Hostetter, staff representative for American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Council 31 in Springfield, Ill. "That's a huge blow to a lot of these economies." Vandalia (Ill.) Mayor Ricky Gottman estimates that closing the Vandalia Statehouse where Lincoln was a state representative will cost his community as much as $50,000 a year in sales and other taxes. Admission fees and sales this year at the Armstrong Air & Space Museum, which opened in 1972 in the astronaut's hometown of Wapakoneta, produced $206,527. Greg Marjenin, 56, of Cleveland, took off work from the Cleveland Clinic and made a seven-hour round trip earlier this month to visit the museum. "A place like this I'm sure has national if not international interest," Marjenin said. "To actually see real things means more than seeing a picture on the Internet. "With a spacesuit, you can just imagine what it would be like for someone to be wearing one of those or to see a capsule to see how cramped it actually is." Rebecca Macwhinney, historic site manager, said she and her six fellow staffers worry that the museum's one-week closing in March may be just the beginning. "It's so important for this museum to remain open to share the vision, to intrigue people's minds," said. ___ Some historic sites to close temporarily 11/17/2008, 12:01 a.m. ET The Associated Press (AP) - The following Ohio historic sites will close for one week in March. VanArsdalen, was born in Fairfield area and moved to Huntington County, IN.  He died there 8 April 1879, with a death notice of two lines that he had died in the local paper in Warren.  There was never another obit, and I would love to learn of where he was buried.  Death Records were not started until 1882 in Indiana.  My only hope is that there is a mention of his death in the Fairfield area papers.  His father was Cornelius VanArsdalen who died in the 1890s, and is buried in Baltimore, he also had siblings still living the area as well, so I am hopeful in finding something.  His wife was Eva (I can not remember her maiden name right now, her parents and a few siblings are buried at the little cemetery on Stringtown Road on the west side of the road not to south of Pleasantville Rd, near Baltimore). If I can find where William was buried, then hopefully, I can find the death date of Eva as well via the burial location, I can not find her after the 1880 census in Huntington County IN. Andrea Sharp Long, gg granddaughter of William F. and Eva VanArsdalen

Survived by wife and one child. ["Genealogical Abstracts from The Lancaster (Ohio) Gazette, V7, 1906-1910", Fairfield County Gen., Society, 2006]. Since that's an abstract, perhaps there's more in the actual article? Did you try searching for any Ulysses rather than just Grant? (Assuming that the U. is for Ulysses, that is). "My problem is on the 1900 census it states Grant's mother was born in Ohio and on the 1880 it says Lucy was born in Va. so is it his mom? How much credit do I give to the 1900 census?" It looks like you're heading in the right direction. Census records often tend to have discrepencies such as you mention. And there's a span of 20 years from 1880 and 1900. I wouldn't drop this family as a possiblity because of that just yet. What about the supposed mother? Did you find a death certificate on her? Or an obit? Or what about Grant's possible brother, Charley? Did you look for more info on him? Maybe his obituary might mention a brother who died before him. What about Grant's widow and daughter Nellie? Did you find them in the 1910 and subsequent censuses? There's always a slim chance they might be residing with an inlaw, especially if she didn't get remarried before then. Tossing out suggestions :) Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. There was a Grant E. but he was born after 1900. There are a good many Clark entries in the partition records but that takes quite a lot of time to check each one. Sorry. Oh yes Forest Rose is not published. Margaret Calvin Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Nellie M Clark married Creighton W White. I need help with finding info on Nellie's dad -Grant Clark (b 1874 d 1906). Her death certificate says his name was U.S.Clark. Which I can't find anywhere. I finally found them on the 1900 census ( he was transcribed as Grace. So Grant, Alice and Nellie are in Lancaster Ward 5, Fairfield in 1900. He is 26. so I should be able to find him on the 1880 census. The only Grant of the correct age I can find is the son of Lucy A, living in Lancaster. she has 2 sons, Charley and Grant and a daughter Francis. widowed- Would anyone know what happened to this Grant? My problem is on the 1900 census it states Grant's mother was born in Ohio and on the 1880 it says Lucy was born in Va. so is it his mom? How much credit do I give to the 1900 census? Would you have any ideas on how to match up the family in 1880 to the 1900 family? Grant died in 1906 so I can't get a death certificate and no one could find an obit.I'd appreciate any help or ideas. thanks Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. The family appears to carry German names through the generations, so now I know why Bertha chose the names Ilo and Hazel. It is indeed a very small world. The Lawrence Unger listed in the 1880 Pickaway County census was born 11-1871. If so, he would not have needed to register. It seems that when the cards were scanned that the front of the card is out of sync with the back of the card. In other words, not all front and backs of the cards are for the same person. Check the information carefully when using them. Ancestry said they were working on the problem but to the best of my knowledge the problem has never been fixed.
