    1. ALLSPAUGH, EWING and
    2. David C. Crane
    3. I would like to contact descendents of anyone named ALLSPAUGH (that spelling is most likely) in the vicinity of Fairfield County. My great great grandmother was: Emily "Emma" C. ALLSPAUGH b. 26 Feb 1839, in Baltimore, Fairfield Co., Ohio, m. 23 Sep 1862, in Butler Twp., Knox Co., Ohio, Edward F. EWING, b. 1841, Ohio, d. 1928, Kansas?. Emily died 3 Aug 1916 in Kansas City, MO. Children: 4. i Myrtle Blanche Ewing b. 15 Jun 1866. ii Jessica "Jessie" Ewing b.~1868, Ohio. May be the same person as "Deed" Ewing. 5. iii Deed Ewing b. 1869. iv Florence Ewing b. ~1873, Ohio. Probably died fairly young. No trace of her in current family records. 6. v Darl Ewing b. 1877. 7. vi Dell Ewing b. 1881. I believe this is the same Emily as the one in the 1850 federal census of Fairfield Co., OH, Baltimore Liberty TWP. p.193. If so, her father may be (John Henry?) "J.H." Allspaugh b. 25 Feb 1815, Lancaster, Fairfield Co., Ohio, occupation: Coal dealer. I do not know the name of his first wife, Emily's mother, who he married ~1837, probably in central Ohio. She was between 20 and 25 in 1840, d. ~1848, He remarried 15 Mar 1849, in Delaware Co., Ohio, a second wife named Mary Jane REEDER, b. Jan 1831, Delaware Co. OH, d. 16 Apr 1899, Mt. Vernon, Knox Co., Ohio, buried: Mound View Cem., Sec. I, Row 1, Lot 15. John died 7 Apr 1894, Mt. Vernon, Knox Co., Ohio.

    3. The only reason I am on this list, is to see if there is someone I can help. If you are located here in OH, I figure, you are close enough to resources that you can help yourself. IF you are not located in OH, however, please include your location in your signature or somewhere, and I will pay more attention to the post. I only do this as a voluteer as I have time, but am more than willing to help those "longdistance" reseachers. 1. Baldoser (Balthaser)
    2. Robin Smith
    3. Hello Everyone, I am researching the Baldosers of Fairfield and Pickaway Co. Daniel and Catherine (Swank) BALDOSER (BALTHASER) moved to Perry Co. from Berks Co. PA and died in Junction City, OH in Perry Co. Their son Daniel (b 1824) lived in Fairfield Co. near Tarlton, OH. Daniel had one brother Henrich (b 1826) and two sisters Louidiana (b 1821) and Catherina (b 1815) all of who were born in Mcconnellsburg PA. Daniel was married twice once to Elizabeth Cochran who died in Ill. in 1858 and once to Harriet North who died in Fairfield Co. in 1882. I am interested in any information on Daniel and Catherine BALDOSER or any BALDOSER in this area. Daniel and Elizabeth had three children: Simon Peter, John Franklin and Lavina J. VALENTINE. Daniel and Harriet had 9 children: Otis Theadore, Albert E., Effie Mariah LUTZ, Daniel W., Austin E., William Isaac, Lucy B. DOSER, Jacob and Patrick. I know from reading my Simon Peter's diaries that we were related to Benville BALTHASAR and Henry BALTHASAR but I don't know where the connection is. If anyone has info on these families or would like to share info I have on these families please contact me. Robin Smith (robins@ohiolinks.com)

    1. Catholic Records in Fairfield County Ohio
    2. Carol Swinehart
    3. Tom Oatney asked: Has anyone copied the records from St. Mary's Church in Lancaster? I >always had a tough time getting them to respond to any requests for >information. If they have not been copied, they would be a good one to get. The Catholic Record Society in Columbus at 197 E Gay St., Columubus, Ohio 43215 phone (614) 241-2571 has a microfilm of their records and will do research for you (it will take months they are all volunteers and come in once a week). I just finished talking to a gentleman at the society and he gave me some information that I believe will help those who are searching for their Catholic ancestors. 1. The Catholic Record Society has all the records for the Diocese of Columbus (boundaries as of 1960). 2. In order to be married in the Catholic church you must show a baptismal record - this information may appear on the marriage record. 3. Lancaster, Fairfield County, Ohio was a central location. Priests were like circuit riders and went out once or twice a year marrying and baptising Catholics in the area. Thus, a couple in Chillicothe maybe included in the St. Mary's records. 4. Priests usually did not attend funerals of members outside the immediate area. Thus, death records are scattered. 5. The completeness of the records varies depending on the personality and interest of the priest. 6. If you are interested in seeing the extent of the Diocese of Columbus get hold of a OGS Report Fall 1995 p. 160+ for an excellent article. The Fairfield County District Library in Lancaster, Ohio has back issues of the Report. 1. Fairfield County Geneology
    2. George Wilkinson
    3. My search includes the following surnames: Wilkinson, Teal, Murphy, Hart, Bargar, Stansbery and Harps. My grandfather, George Washington Wilkinson was born in Lancaster on 3/4/1868 to George Wilkinson and Martha Harps, who were married in Lancaster on 11/26/1866. The 1880 census indicates that both were born in Ohio. I have been unable to locate their ancestory, although the same census shows that George's father was born in Pennsylvania and his mother in Ohio. George died on Oct. 8, 1881 following a wagon accident. Martha's parents were both born in Ohio. Grandfather George W. married Electra Leigh Hart in Lancaster on 11/28/1894. Their marriage produced my father, George H. Wilkinson, who was born on July 31, 1898 and graduated from Lancaster HS in 1916. My grandmother Hart was descended from the Teal, Murphy, Hart, Bargar and Stansbery families. Her great-grandfather was Arthur Teal who came to Fairfield County in 1799 from Maryland. He married Sarah Murphy(date unknown), who had come to Ohio about the same time from Pennsylvania. Their daughter, Elizabeth Teal, married William Hart on 11/27/1828. Elizabeth was born in Fairfield County and William was born in Pennsylvania. William and Elizabeth's son, Henry C. Hart, married Julia S. Bargar on 12/21/1869. Henry & Julia became the parents of my grandmother. The 1880 census indicates that Elizabeth Teal Hart(probably widowed) was living on a farm in Richland Twp. with her brother Washington Teal. The Teals and the Harts were largely farmers, residing in Richland and Pleasant Townships. Through the aid of Karen Smith I was able to find a reference to Arthur Teal's brother Edward, who resided in Pleasant Twp, and held the first Methodist meeting in the County at or near his cabin sometime before 1800. Karen also provided me with information that enabled me to locate the grave of Arthur Teal. I am grateful for her help. Julia Bargar's parents were George W. Bargar and Amanda Stansbery. They had come to Fairfield County from Maryland during the 1850's. I hope to visit Lancaster in the Spring to do further research, especially with regard to the Wilkinson's, and am also considering a trip to Maryland in order to find out more about the Teal and Bargar families. I think this mailing list is a great idea that will allow those interested in the genealogy and history of Fairfield County to communicate more easily. George(Bud) Wilkinson Medina, Ohio

    1. Re: introduction attn: Pat Berens
    2. Karl Seitz
    3. Pat: You are probably correct about people with the Seitz surname, although I wouldn't rule out ties through some female lines. There were also more Beerys to start with in Fairfield County, hence more descendants. The Beery name is well researched in many places in addition to Fairfield County. The family has had at least four books written about either the entire family or a particular branch. Two by Joseph Wenger early in this century, which contain errors; another by William Beery and his daughter, Judith Beery Garber, in 1957 and one in 1975 by Phyllis Fulk and Lois Brown about the Page County, Iowa, branch of Beerys, which has Fairfield County ties. I only wish trio of men who are known to have been researching the Seitz family back in the 1920s and 1930s had gotten around to writing a book on the family. One of them, Edward Seitz Shumaker, did edit a book on the descendants of Henry Keller, another early settler in Fairfield County, who married Lewis Seitz's sister Catherine in York County, Penn. -- Karl Seitz >Karl, > >Enjoyed reading your introduction to the Fairfield Co., OH mailing list. >For any of us who have done general research on Fairfield Co. names, >Seitz and Beery are well known. 1. Spelling of German Names in Fairfield County
    2. Carol Swinehart
    3. In Carole's posting i.e. I am researching the family of John Pressler b. 1807 Centre County PA, and moved to Fairfield County before 1828. This brings up an interesting point. Many of the people who first came to Fairfield County were of German origin. Their names were spelled in German - i.e. Pressler might be Bressler; Schweikert might be Schweigert or Sweigert/Sweikert; Baumann might be changed to Bauman; Spon to Spohn, Schweinhart might be Schweinhard or Sweinhard or anglised to Swinehart/Swinheart. B and P are interchangeable in German T and D are interchangeable in German G and K are interchangeable in German C and K are interchangeable in German -Konrad or Conrad sound the same SS in German looks like a F and may be written as such if misread Don't miss your ancestor because you haven't considered all the possible spellings of their last name and or first name. 3. First I'd like to say a BIG thank you to Carol Swinehart for providing us with a long-overdue Fairfield County list. I am researching the family of John Pressler b. 1807 Centre County PA, and moved to Fairfield County before 1828. He moved from Fairfield County to Whitley County Indiana in Oct., 1846. While in Ohio he met and married Mariah/Maria Egolf. John's parents were Valentine Bresler and Magdalena ?? I would appreciate any information on siblings of John. The Egolfs came to Fairfield from Montgomery Co., PA in 1827 and in 1837 also moved to Whitley County, IN. I would love to hear from anyone who might be researching these families and who may have information to share. Thanks in advance. Carole (Northern Michigan)

    3. Hello Fairfield: I am Barbara Brown Porter, and live in Lakeside, AZ. Moved here 3 years ago from Tucson, where I moved from Marion Co., OH in 1947 with my parents. Many of my OH ancestors are from Marion, Delaware, Hardin area. The Fairfield family I am researching is Nehemiah Benedict Waters b. 30 Aug 1780 in NJ, d 10 Oct 1859 in Green Camp, Marion, OH. He lived in Luzerne Co., PA, probably where he married Esther CARY, 20 Dec 1807. From there they moved to Delaware Co., OH abt 1810. They were there for a few years, and then moved to Greenfield, Fairfield Co., OH before 1820, where they lived about 18 years. Then moved back to GreenCamp, Marion, OH. I know nothing about his parents, suspect his mother was a Benedict. Their children were: 1. Mary Cary Waters b 11 Nov 1808 PA 2. Sarah Downing Waters b. 16 Feb 1814 3. Mercy Ann Waters b. 1818 4. Benjamin Cary Waters b. 24 Dec 1819, Fairfield Co., OH 5. John Henry Waters b. 1822 Fairfield 6. Elizabeth Waters, b 1824, Fairfield. 7. He died in 1816 and is buried in the Zion Ridge Cemetery in Thorn Tp, next to his wife and near to Anna Catharine Zartman Swinehart.
