    2. MRS DARLEEN A BERENS
    3. Hi; I have in my database a James Cowden of Lancaster, OH probably born arount 1855 upward that is the father of an out of wedlock girl. She was born to my G-Aunt Anna Barbara Yenrick b. 6 Jul 1860 in Lancaster. The child was Adah Laselle Yenrick b. 22 Jul 1878. Anna Barbara did go on to marry a Rudolph I think. Anyway it was always known that Adah was born out of wedlock, then when the church records of St. Peter's Evang. Lutheran Church of Lancaster came out in a book, it has Adah's baptism recorded with her parents being Anna Barbara Yenrick and James Cowden. I am looking for a family to put James Cowden (parents if possible). Any help would be appreciated. By the way the book has several Cowden records in it. Sincerely, Darleen Ritchey Berens

    3. I have obtained information directly from St. Mary's Catholic Church in Lancaster. In the letter I explained my relationship to the person on whom I was seeking information, and I enclosed a donation for their time. In each instance I only requested one piece of information so the search time was minimal. The reply was reasonably prompt. Unlike public records, the church does not have to make this information available. Therefore, we must be more polite, and cooperative than we ever thought we could be because they are not there for our convenience. Also, since they don't have to do this why should they have to provide someone to do the work? That's why I make a small donation. Pat pberens@greenapple.com

    3. I am quoting from the Archdiocese of Cincinnati and belief this reflects the feelings of most parishes and diocese - "All general Genealogy requests received by a parish are to be forwarded to the Archives for a repy. HOwever, parish may do there only genelogy research. A researcher is NEVER to be given direct access to the sacramental registers; all research MUST be done by a staff person. The parish may also charge whatever fee they consider reasonable for this service" As you can see - OGS could not get into the records except by act of God. Sorry, no can do. 3. I am researching my ancestor Joseph PHILLIPS who immigrated to Fairfield Co. in 1828 from Alsace, France. I am interested in learning about any other Alsatian immigrants to Fairfield County. Others that I have come across in my research are Conrad WINTER (1780 - 1844) and his wife Elizabeth WEBER (1790-1863), and Francis Anthony STECK (1806 - 1883) and his wife Magdeline BUECHLER (b. 1807). All families lived in Berne Twp. I would be interested in sharing information with other descendants of Alsatian immigrants. If you are uncertain as to whether your ancestor came from Alsace, if the individual had a German name and gave "France" as his place of birth, chances are he was Alsatian. Sheila Rider

    3. Dear Friends: Congratulations on the start of this listserve. I am currently researching the descendants of Joseph PHILLIPS , b. 1793 in the little village of Friesen, Alsace, France. He came to Berne Twp, Fairfield Co. in 1828 with his wife and six children. He had a farm and in 1853 he provided the land on which a little catholic church was built called St. Joseph's, Rush Creek. The cemetery is still there on Horns Mill Rd. I am descended from his oldest daughter Regina and have her other descendants fairly well documented. However, I am looking for the descendants of his oldest son, Joseph Jr., who married Mary DUMM in 1845. Their youngest daughter, Elizabeth "Betsy" Phillips married Jacob MESSBARGER in 1867. Among their children were several girls whose married names I am listing: Abbie FORD, Annie PIPER, Clara WINTER, Elizabeth KRILE, and Minnie KILLBARGER. I am interested in hearing from anyone who may be descended from any of these individuals. The family was catholic and I believe some of the descendants may still be in the Sugar Grove area. 3. I have just subscribed to your list and since my great great grandfather Solomon PONSLER aka SPONSLER was supposedly in Fairfield County, Ohio in February 11, 1822 I am asking for any information on him that might be available. Parents and/or siblings. He married Chloe Malinda Breckenridge born Franklin County August 11, 1828 {and no information known on her except her tombstone states under her name "daughter of John & Rebecca Breckenridge"} on February 7, 1847 in Franklin County, Ohio. I assuming their 2 oldest children were born in either Fairfield or Franklin there as they were in the 1850 Ohio census. A third daughter was born there before they moved to Illinois. Any information on this family will be gratefully received. Thank you for taking the time to read this. 1. My Fairfield County Surnames
    2. Many thanks to Carol for bringing Fairfield County on-line. My family surnames in Fairfield County include CRIST/CHRIST, EATON, BECK, ROBESON, MILLER, BROWN, OWENS. Christ/Crists are from Ingleheim, Germany and immigrated about 1839, which is my most recently arrived line. They lived in Berne and Madison Twps and attended St. Thomas Lutheran where the early family members are buried. Believe the Eatons and Owens came into the area from Hampshire Co., WVa/Frederick Co., VA area and that there is a Fisher connection here somewhere. Becks and Robesons are in early Berne Twp. My Millers and Browns are from PA but don't seem to connect with other families of this name in the area. Down in Hocking Co., which is just next-door, are these family names - many with branches that reach into Fairfield Co. They include STUMP, LUTZ, FOX, FRIEND, CAVE, WHITE, JULIAN/JULIEN/de St. JULIEN, BUTLER, INGMIRE, LACEY, and KERR. Also have RAYs and WILLIAMSes in Fairfield and Hocking that moved up from Campbell Co., TN during the late 1920s. I was born in Lancaster, Fairfield Co. in 1944 and am a transplanted Buckeye living in southern New Jersey, just 6 miles from Philadelphia. Happy to exchange info on these families and anything else related to Fairfield Co. charla in nj Charla Marchione marchpubs@juno.com

Variations in spelling often occur, and researchers should also be aware of downright misspellings. When I was trying to locate my great grandfather George Wilkinson in the 1880 census I found that he was not shown, although I knew he was living in Lancaster in 1880. After a brief panic I decided to look at all similar spellings. I found a "Wilkins" listed as residing in Lancaster and decided check him out. It was him...... the microfilm confirmed this by the names of his wife and children, which I already knew. His handwritten surname was hard to read, and was very likely misspelled when transcribed. I would think that this type of situation is very common. Bud Wilkinson
