Researching GRIMM, HAMILTON, POLING, SCHOLL/SHULL, SHAW, SHEETS living in Berne Twp and Rush Creek Twp in Fairfield Co, Marion Twp in Hocking Co, and Jackson Twp in Perry Co, especially from about 1830 to 1900. Two of my gggrandfathers were JOSEPH S SHAW [1800-1866] and NOAH GRIMM [1822-?] of Marion Twp. Though Joseph and his wife PHEBE (POLING) SHAW arrived from WVa, a number of other Polings: including Benjamin, Richard, Samuel, and Martin lived nearby on Rush Creek. Presumably, they were Phebe's relatives. Joseph and Phebe had at least 5 children: William, Sarah Ann (Shaw) Sheets, Elizabeth Ann (Shaw) Shull, Joseph Newton, and Baxter Marion [my ggrandfather]. Noah Grimm and hiw wife NANCY (HAMILTON) GRIMM were both born in Fairfield Co, Noah in Rush Crk Twp, Nancy in Berne Twp. Their children included John, Asenath Sarah [my ggrandmother], Jacob, Israel, Sara A., William, Amos and Phebe [later Phebe Call]. I would love to talk with anyone looking into any of these families. Hi! I am new to this list, and fairly new to genealogy research. I never knew my father's people, not even their names, until I started searching old records 3 years ago. My great-grandparents and other relatives lived in Fairfield Co. Ohio in the early 1800's...and I imagine some of their descendents still do. My great grandfather was Lemente(Lemont, Lemoyne, Lemunday) Eckert, b in Fairfield Co. about 1806-10. He was the son of Jacob L. Eckert and Catharine (Kitty) Shellenbarger, who are buried in the Crawfis-Emery Cemetery in FF Co. His wife was Nancy VanTries, b in Lancaster Co. Pa, daughter of Isaac and Mary Vantries. Carol Swinehart has been a tremendous help to me, in my search. I can't say enough about her kindness and her expertise. I would love to hear from anyone there who is descended from, related to, or has any information about ANY Eckerts. Thanks! Virginia (Ginny) Eckert O'Shea (Lake Ronkonkoma, NY) voshea@suffolk.lib.ny.us
To: Carol Swinehart From: Jane and Charles Lee So good to hear that you are on the mend! Wish you could join us at Cardiac Rehab here in Columbia every MWF at 7am. I'm keeping a blocked artery under control and Jane is working to avoid coronary thrombosis which our genalogical reseaches tells us that her family is prone to. I can imagine all the exasperating and scarey tests you've been through. Different from mine, I'm sure, but (although interesting at times) a great nuisance. God bless you and keep you. So many of us need you. We're praying hard.
From the Dutch Colonies Mailing List at rootsweb.com Since there were some settlers who came to Fairfield County of "Netherland Dutch" descent, I am including the following story of the 1st Thanksgiving. The First Thanksgiving In New Netherland (New York) Although a treaty of peace had been made with the Esopus on July 15,1660,Stuyvesant did not return the Indians he had sent into slavery at Curacao, and the Indian tribes never forgot. It was because of this, that after nearly four years of peace, on the 7th of June, 1663, as the villagers of Wildwyck went about their daily activities, several small bands of Indians came through the gates, nearly unnoticed. As they went through the streets offering beans and corn for sale, a horseman rode through the gates shouting "the Indians have destroyed the new village!" At this moment, the Indians set Wildwyck in flames, and either murdered, or took prisoner, many of the village residents. In December of this year, the chiefs appeared before the Council, anxious for peace. During the next five months, those settlers, who had been taken captive, were returned. Then, on May 15th, a notable gathering assembled in the council room at New Amsterdam. His "Noble Worship" the director Petrus Stuyvesant presided. Others in attendance were: the Honorable Nicasius de Sille, the Honorable C.V. Ruyven, the Honorable Cornelis Steenwyck, the Honorable Paulus Leenderstsen van der Grist, Burgomasters of the city, Captain Lieutenant Marten Cregier, Lieutenant van Couwenhoven, Govert Loockermans, of Staten Island; Thomas Chambers, Commissary of the village of Wildwyck; Jacob Backer, President of the Schepens; and Abraham Wilmerdonk. Sara Kierstede acted as interpreter. Representing the Esopus, were approximately twelve of the tribal chiefs. After much talk the terms of the peace was agreed upon. This treaty marks the passing of the Indian. He was no longer a menace or a terror. On May 6, 1664, Dominie Blom sent a petition to Stuyvesant asking that June 7th of every year be designated as an anniversary or thanksgiving day, on which no work should be done, in remembrance of the return of those taken captive by the Indians, and to "thank his Divine Majesty for it". Stuyvesant complied with the request, and on May 31st, he issued a pro-clamation to all the magistrates of the colony designating June 4th a general day of thanksgiving for the conclusion of the peace with the Indians and the return of the captives. The magistrates were to advise the "reverend ministers of God's word, that it may be by them communicated from the altar to the community". Hello MAURER searchers; I am Carl MOURY and I was asked to write to the list, and explain about my familly and what I have heard from some of the older folks. I was told by some of the older family members at some of the reunions that our name came from Germany, spelled MAURER, and when the families came over from germany to the new world or the USA they changed their name spelling to MOURY/MOWRY/MOWERY there may be more spellings than that, but know body knew of any more. I am just wondering if there is anybody out there that might know anymore about this name changes? Might there be some one that might be doing the research on my name as now? I do have the name of MOURY/MOWERY on my search. My brother and I think that when the folks came over they migrated either in W Va. or S.Carolina or maybe in N. Carolina. But any how they were in Ohio when we started this family tree. The home place where we found the most of the relatives are in Lancaster, Ohio. But from different twps. Thanks for reading this, Carl cmoury@acc-net.com Marion, Oh.

On 12 Nov 1997 I went into the hospital as an outpatient for a routine stress test to take some pictures of my heart. Well, they FOUND the problem. I had an arrthymia for 30 seconds at the end of the stress test - which in case you are wondering I passed. So only by the Grace of GOd and the wonders of modern medicine go I. In order to fix the problem I had to have a heart ablation to recircuit my heart and was in the hosiptal for 8 days. I was only home for 11 hours before I came down with the stomach flu/food poisoning and ended up back at the emergency room to be rehydrated. Fortunately they only had to keep me for 6/7 hours. Today I am thankful to be alive and feeling MUCH better. Best wishes to you all. Have a Happy and Healthy Thanksgiving. Dear Bill, I am also on another mailing list, for Deleware. We just had a discussion on migratory patterns. It seems that many that move out of Deleware went to OHIO. My ancestors moved from Sussex Co., Deleware to Pickaway Co. OHIO by at least 1840's possible 1830's or sooner (just haven't been able to figure out yet). My suggestion (even though a long shot) would be to check out the Deleware Gen Web page and do some fishing around there! Maybe even join the newsgroup there. If that doesn't work. It may be beneficial to research migratory patterns of those coming into Fairfield OHIO, and also look at the groups comings in (eg. Germans, Irish ..... etc.) that may give you a clue.
