Hi Darleen! Is this Scholl/Shull family any relation to the family of Solomon and Kitty (or Catherine) (HUBER) SHULL? I am trying to research this Catherine. There is a will of a John/Johann HUBER in Fairfield Co who mentions his daughter Catherine. My problem is determining if his Catherine is the one who married Solomon SHULL or the one who married Henry KELLER, or neither one <g> Take care :-) Amy ---------- > From: MRS DARLEEN A BERENS <Darleen_Berens@prodigy.com> > To: OHFAIRFI-L@rootsweb.com > Subject: Fairfield Co. Hi - I have been researching my family surname CARMEAN, also spelled CREMEAN, in Ohio. Most Carmeans seem to have settled in Ross County in the early 1800's, but I just discovered some CARMEANS/CREMEANS in Fairfield County as well. Does anyone have any information on this family? Also looking for information on the LEAR family of Fairfield County. Thanks for your help! Robyn Iverson

Thanks to all of you who contacted me concerning my search for Eckert ancestors. Yesterday a dream came true and I was able to set up a home page especially for this. The URL is http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Estates/4691/index.html It contains much more information than I could include in an e-mail post, so anyone who is interested may check it out at their leisure. Again, thanks, and have happy holidays, everyone! Virginia (Ginny) Eckert O'Shea
Can anyone tell me how to obtain a copy of Charles R. Goslin's Crossroads & Fence Corners: Historical Lore of Fairfield Co. How many volumes are there? Thanx. Also, for Virgina who's researching the Echert, Shellenbarger, Van Tries & Ream families. I have found info on the Ream family (loads), on the Eckert family (G. L., Jacob, & Miss), & on the Shallenberger family ( David, Henry, R. & Sallie) in C.M.L. Wiseman's Pioneer Period & Pioneer People of Fairfield Co., OH. I looked up Jacob Eckert for you (p36) & it says " Jacob Eckert built a mill & he was married to Sallie Shallenberger. That's all on him. Marg Bond
Is there anyone in your Gen Society that would be able to get some land record information for me from the Court House in Lancaster. I have information that a Samuel Thompson purchased land in two of the twps in Fairfield Co and wondered if these might be the same Samuel or another Samuel. I realize that there would be a charge but maybe after Christmas if someone could do so I would be more than happy to pay the charges and coping cost plus mailing, maybe even a small donation to your Society as well. I also want your to know that I have really enjoyed this digest. It has been great even though I have not found anything on it yet to help me directly with my researching but it has kept me interested in Fairfield Co, whenever I go to Fort Wayne to research, I usually pull information out of that area first. I am trying to be well informed about Fairfield Co. and particularlly Bloom twp. I am amaized that both of the families I am researching in Bloom twp never seemed to come into contact with each other. They were not that far distant from each other. The Thompson's were around Lithopolis and the Kings were up close to the Violet twp border. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.........................Shirley (Miller) Thompson
The following is quoted from: _Putnam County Pioneer Association, Centennial History, 1873-1973_ written mostly by Audrey S(tauffer) Carroll: page 46: In 1880 John Carwfis bequeathed the township $25,000 "..to build a school of higher learning." The building erected in 1888 was named Crawfis College. This school was operated for twenty years as an academy boarding school, it became a first grade township high school. In 1940 the Crawfis School ws abandoned and ahigh school building was constructed in Gilboa. ... but it's more likely your grandmother attended the one in Fairfield County. Mary Burdick
There was a Crawfis Institute in Berne Township, Fairfield County, near Sugar Grove. The following information is quoted from Charles R. Goslin's Crossroads and Fence Corners: Historical Lore of Fairfield County, Volume I, page 112: "A story of the Berne Township schools would not be complete without mention of Crawfis Institute, named in honor of John Crawfis, who was born in Berne Township and moved to Putnam County in 1834. In his will, John Crawfis stated that at the death of his wife (he had no children) his large land holdings in Putnam County were to be sold and the money divided to provide for normal schools in Berne Township of Fairfield County and in Putnam County. In 1889 land was purchased in Section 16 from Caleb and Elizabeth Pearce, and Crawfis was erected in that year. To honor Crawfis, the door of this school was faced to the east, toward the site of his birth. During 1889 and 1890 the building housed the township high school. In 1891 and after, it became Crawfis Institute, a school of higher learning, to comply with the provisions of the will. It became an important school, with dormitories for the students; and the Hocking Valley Railroad provided for a station stop where students could board or leave the passenger trains." There was a school with a name like that in Putnam County. If I've got the right one, I know little about it. do you know where the Crawfis Institute you are asking about was located? If you think I might be on to it, I can look a little further. Mary Burdick Watertown, MA On Fri, 12 Dec 1997, Carol A. I am researching the following families in Fairfield Co OH. I would love to exchange information. Virginia ECKERT O'Shea *********************************************************************** About 1798: Jacob L. Eckert and his brother George Eckert (both born early 1770's) came from Lancaster Co. Pa to settle on land obtained by their father, George Eckert (resident of Lancaster Co, Pa), by grant/title 6/13/1811. Jacob L. Eckert married Catherine (Kitty) Shellenbarger(berger?) and they had either 4 or 7 children including Lemente( a/k/a Lemont, Lemoyne,Lemunday)(b about 1806-1810), Lewis, Sally. Catherine (Kitty) died about 1816-17 and Jacob K. married Rebecca Johnston, by whom he had one child, George. In a few years, Jacob died, and Rebecca married Jacob Ream. Jacob L, and his first wife Catherine (Kitty) are buried in the Crawfis-EmeryCemetery in Lancaster, Ohio. The Reams are buried in the Ream cemetery about a mile away. Guardians were appointed for the minor/infant children: Isaac Coons (Koontz) for Lemente(called Lemunday in the guardianship records); Samuel and Henry Shellenbarger, John Graybill were guardians for the other children. Lemente married Nancy VanTries, daughter of Isaac and Mary Vantries of Lancaster Co Pa. They were living with one child in Fairfield County Ohio at the time of the 1830 census. At some point they moved to Bucks Twp, Hardin Co Ohio, and appear as farmers on the 1860 census there with their younger children David, Angeline, Ziba and Edwin S.(My grandfather). (Older children Sarah, Jane, Rebecca and Susannah had apparently married and were no longer at home.) Lemente and Nancy are buried in the Sieg Cemetery in Kenton, Hardin Co, Ohio. Am seeking ANY persons who are descended from Eckert, Shellenbarger(berger), VanTries. I realize I'm not furnishing much information, but 3 years ago I wasn't even sure of my grandparent's names. I never knew any of my father's people. (He died in 1944, so the trail is very cold). With no training or knowlege of how to research geneaolgy, I used what has been called a "shotgun approach". ("Fire a large blast in a general direction and hope you hit something"). After writing (almost 500) letters to every Eckert in Ohio phone books, and also in several other states, and watching Soundex census tapes until I was dizzy, I've learned a lot more, but there are still many branches missing from the family tree. In fact, I can't even find a trace of 3 of my father's brothers! (Walter E., Edwin W and Harry S.V.) So I have a lot more searching to do! So if you know anyone who has an Eckert, Shellenbarger or VanTries even several generations back in their family tree, I would love to hear from them..."just in case" we are related. Thank you for having the patience to wade through this. I will appreciate any suggestions or help you may be able to give me. Virginia Eckert O'Shea

To: Carol Swinehart From: Jane and Charles Lee We trust that your message on church records (for which thanks) is a subtle way of letting us know that you are out of the hospital, home or in the libraries and archives. Great! We've been worried about you. Come to think of it, have you ever heard of anyone's using hospital records for genealgical purposes? I suppose they are the most sacrosant of the sacrosant. I do know of a great doctor's book which gives you the details of what was going on inside of the notables whose outsides are displayed in their portraits of the local arts gallery!!
