    1. Fairfield County histories

    3. My father's family spent most of the 1800's in Fairfield & Hocking county, and I am trying to get more of a feel of the area at that time, as well as information about my relatives. Q1: I have recently found lists of local histories that show at least three for Fairfield County and one (a history of the Hocking Valley) which includes Hocking County. Since these are mainly available on microfilm or microfiche -- which is tiring to read and too expensive to copy -- I wonder if anyone can suggest which I might start with. Since I haven't found any indexes available, I'll have to take pot-luck on my particular relatives (ANSEL, GARRISON, GRIM[M], HAMILTON, POLING, SHAW, SHEETS, SHOLL/SHULL). Since some histories are largely accounts of the comings and goings of mayors and mill-owners, and many of my family were farmers, I would appreciate any hints about the flavor of the various histories. I suspect other readers of the list, who have been unable so-far to visit the area, would also appreciate short "reviews" of histories people on the list have looked at.

    3. Dear Friends: The following is an exchange between a subscriber to your list, a Mr. David C. Crane, and myself, concerning a slight format problem my eMail program. My wife, Sheila Rider (a native of Lancaster, FYI) had posted an inquiry to the list concerning Ruth W. Drinkle's book ARCHITECTURE AND ARTS and any other similiar books, pamphlets, brochures, etc., that she could send to some newly-discovered cousins in Alsace, France, describing Ohio, Fairfield County, Berne Township -- in general, the area Sheila's Alsatian ancestors moved to in the US. We use Microsoft Outlook Express, and we seem to have trouble getting the program to consistently send out what we want sent out in plain text format. Usually we can get it to work. Inadvertently my wife's message got sent out in HTML format. Mr. Crane found it necessary to send my wife this message: >Please do not send attachments to a mailing list. Your mailer >(probably MS Explorer) is misconfigured. I know that's the way >Bill Gates did it, but it is none-the-less wrong. > >This attachment is nothing more than the same file as your message, >except it is in HTML format and it clutters up the disk space of >EVERY person on the mailing list. My wife was extremely upset at Mr. Crane's patronizing, condescending attitude, but being more diplomatic than I am, she sent Mr. Crane this message: >I did not intentionally send an attachment to the mailing list. I have >attempted to correct the problem. If this message is still not in the >correct format, I suggest that you not open any messages from > pwilson@methodist.edu in the future. I, however, being much LESS diplomatic, and seeing how upset my wife was, sent the following: >I read the message you sent to my wife concerning the conversion of her >original message into an HTML-based attachment. >> >I will set aside for the moment the issue of why you would want to be rude >to a total stranger, particularly one who shares at least one of your >interests. > >If the configuration of our copy of Microsoft Outlook Express is the >problem, I would appreciate your input on how to configure the program so >that the default value for writing for new messages is plain text, not HTML. > >Try offering a constructive solution before you lash out. To paraphrase >Adlai Stevenson's eulogy of Eleanor Roosevelt, "I would rather light a >candle than flame into the darkness." To which Mr. Crane found it necessary to reply: >Rude? It's you who are rude, fellow. There was nothing rude in my >note. If you can't read, get off the internet. > >(In case you miss the point, THAT was a rude sentence). > >As for offering a "constructive solution", I did so. I said that MS >products are misconfigured at the factory. But I'll be damned if >I'm going to use one of those pieces of shit just so I can explain >to neophytes how to use them. >Yes, two rude sentences. You deserved them both. Did I? Perhaps I am unfamiliar with the latest Internet ettiquette, but then, I've only been on-line now for about a year. Why am I sharing all this with a group of total strangers? I suppose because in my own Internet-based research I have had such wonderful success sharing my results with generous, giving, supportive colleagues, that when I encounter attitudes such as Mr. Crane's I get disheartened. I have had disagreements with eMail correspondents; I have even been called on the carpet for serious errors of judgement concerning material displayed on my website. Corrections have invariably been suggested with grace, tact, and good humor, and I have responded in kind. But we'll get nowhere in this world if something like this goes unchalleneged. I'm sorry Mr. Crane detests Bill Gates so much (boy, he IS an easy target, though, isn't he?), but I don't need to share those bad vibes first thing on a Saturday morning. Paul F. 1. Fairfiled County Publications
    2. pwilson
    3. Dear Friends, I have been corresponding with cousins in Europe and would like to send them some literature that would give them an idea of what Lancaster and Fairfield County are like. I really wanted to send them a copy of Mrs. Drinkle's first book, but I understand it is no longer in print. Would anyone know of any sources where I might get a hold of a used copy? Also, has anyone seen Mrs. Drinkle's second book? Does it contain history as well as architecture? I would also appreciate any suggestions of other booklets, flyers, promotional brochures, anything that would give a little overview of Lancaster/Fairfield County and might include some pictures. Where might I procure some postcards? I used to find them at S.S. Kresge's! One final question: Is there a publication or even a website that I could get acess that would give me Fairfield County statistical information like towns' names, population, mayor's names, etc.? Thank you, Sheila Rider North Carolina

I am sure that there is more in the library. Maybe I can help, once I start my library trips again. 1. Henry Green & Magdalena Kramer
    2. Sue Kramer
    3. Hello I have been trying to find what happened to Henry Green who married Magdalena Kramer in Fairfield Co in 1830. I have had no luck tracing her on the Kramer side, so thought maybe someone may have a connection with the Green Family. It seems they must have left Fairfield Co. Chances are they went with Phillip Kramer in 1830 to Hancock Co Ohio, but the Henry Green in Hancock Co in 1840 did not have a wife named Magdalena or anything close, unless his first wife had died, but there is no record of her death in Hancock Co. Does anyone have Henry Green in their family tree. Thanks Sue Kramer

He married Rachel Kerr 1797-1846 who was the daughter of John and Rachel Kerr who lived near Rushville, OH. John Kerr was active in the Rushcreek Congregation of the Presbyterian movement under Rev. Actually any one with information on early Laceys in Fairfield County is urged/invited to contact me. There was a William and Matthew here in Fairfield County very early. Thanks. Marian

    1. Peter Zartman help needed
    2. Carol Swinehart
    3. I am and have been trying to prove that Anna Catherine Zartman is the daughter of Peter Zartman and Catherine TRoutman, but I can find no official document to substantiate this fact. There is no doubt that this relationship is correct. Peter Zartman and Catherine Troutman came from Northumberland Co, PA to then Fairfield County Ohio just a few years before his death in 1816 in Fairfield County, OH buried in what is now Perry Co Oh in Zion Ridge Cemetery along side his wife near his daughter Anna Catherine Zartman Swinehart and her husband George and a couple of their children. The minister that baptised Anna Catherine Zartman m. George Swinehart Sr died with his church records in his saddle bags and thus, there is no record of her bp other than the Swinehart family bible which does not list her parents. Peter Zartman did not leave a will, partition etc. Nothing that lists Anna Catherine Zartman and or her husband as heirs. Is there a Peter Zartman Bible around???
