Finding the place of origin of our immigrant ancestors can be a daunting task. The URL listed below might provide some insight on where to search. Although it refers to Germany the information would apply to any country. Take a look! http://www.angelfire.com/biz/origins1/ancestors.html Pat pberens@greenapple.com

The Columbus Dispatch June 2, 1998 page 2C said: Sunday service honors Confederate soldiers Joe Briggs Jr., a descendant of the pioneer family whose name is on a road, a high school and a community in western Franklin County, will once again sound taps Sunday at the 103rd memorial service at Camp Chase Confederate Cemetery. Briggs, 68, first took up the bugle while a student at Columbia Military Academy in Tennessee. He resumed his duties with the horn at the cemetery?s 100th anniversary service in 1995. The cemetery, 2900 Sullivant Ave, is the final resting place for 2,060 sons of the South who died while prisoners of war. It is the last remaining section of a Union Army camp set up for the Civil War. This year?s public ceremony, sponsored by the Hilltop Historical Society, will begin at 3 p.m. Hilltop resident Ed Beeman, this year?s featured speaker, will discuss life at the camp and its historical importance. Beeman said his interest in the camp stems in part from the fact that his home in Westgate is on former camp ground. Out of deference to those buried at Camp Chase, Briggs said he will face south as he sounds the mournful tribute that will end the ceremony. -- (:}) JWCramer-HillTopUSA jcramer@freenet.columbus.oh.us Also John.Cramer@das.State.OH.US Beware of the Genealogy Bug; It's bite can be addictive. Then I started failing second grade. Mrs. Kuhn woundn't give up on me, though. She is the one who discovered I had "double" vision. Because of her concern my father took me to the eye doctor and I got glasses. I used to visit her at Cedar Heights Elementary (Lancaster,Ohio about 1954-55?) school. Judith

Thanks to Carol for the lead....The University of Michigan's "Making of America" on-line library contains a work entitled "Historical Collections of Ohio", 636 pages published in 1851. It is fascinating, county by county description of the people, geography and history of the state. Six pages are dedicated to Fairfield County and include historical images and a terrifying account of an Indian attack. Good Stuff! The URL for this book is http://moa.umdl.umich.edu/cgi-bin/moa/sgml/moa-idx?notisid=AJA2910 <http://moa.umdl.umich.edu/cgi-bin/moa/sgml/moa-idx?notisid=AJA2910> The MOA site is at : http://www.umdl.umich.edu/moa/ <http://www.umdl.umich.edu/moa/> I used their search engine on "Fairfield County" and "Ohio" There are endless possibilities. Michigan has an online virtual library captioned "Making of America," featuring books, journals, etc. from the 19th Cent. Each book, journal, article, whatever, has been scanned in its entirety. Each page is a separate GIF image, which makes it a bit slow in browsing, but if you have the time and the computer power, there is some interesting reading to be had. URL is http://www.umdl.umich.edu/moa/ This site has a search engine you can type in your surnames and see what comes up. I know there is a Hawes, George W. Ohio State Gazetters' Business Directory 1860-61 among the collection. Lots of good info including military information.
