A few weeks ago, I asked for help in locating a newspaper known as The Herald-Advertiser in which an extensive article about my great grandfather appeared. I now know the location. The Herald-Advertiser was published from 1927 to 1979 in Huntington, W.Va., as the combined Sunday edition of The Herald-Dispatch and the Huntington Advertiser. I have been in contact with the associate editor at The Herald-Dispatch, which is the only surviving newspaper of the three. However, he was unable to provide any information about the writer of the article, R.C. Hall. I now know of at least two articles that R.C. Hall wrote about men who achieved some prominence in the 19th century. The articles also include information about the men's families. Both appeared in the Herald-Advertiser in the 1930s. Does anybody on these lists have any knowledge about a newspaper writer named R.C. Hall? It is possible that he actually worked for a syndicate that sold its stories to many newspapers. -- Karl Seitz
I have been trying to read the 1870 Fairfield Co. census but the film here is so dim that I can barely find the page numbers, let alone reading the information I'm looking for. Has this census been transcribed, or does anyone have access to a legible film who would do a couple of lookups for me? Hi Folks; So far I have received and answered about 40 requests for early marriage lookups for Fairfield Co. Keep in mind these are not documented marriages, but from newspapers clippings giving names of people that applied for marriage licenses and in most cases only gives month and year. They run from about 1805-1830. My offer still stands to continue to do this. I also have a few (about 350) early marriages for Hocking Co. The Hocking Co. Marriages are from courthouse records and run from about 1825-1841 and could be considered documented. I will look for those as well. Good Luck and Happy Hunting, Darleen Berens

Does anyone have information on these two Leathers families included in the 1840 census: Charles Leathers, Bloom Twp., Fa. Co., OH and Christopher Leathers Violet Twp., Fa. Co., OH???? Thank you, Rebecca

I am searching for information on the BRANDT family. Father: Elija BRANDT born 1820 in Fairfield County, died Breman, Ohio. Wife Barbara KOEGGE born either in Ga or Pa (can't read census record) in 1825. Their children were LEWIS M BRANDT, (6-5-1853---12-16-1946) married to Arminda Jane PAGE on 2-23-1875 , Mary BRANDT (YOUNG), and Lily BRANDT. Lewis and Arminda's children all grew up in Fairfield County. IDA MAY BRANDT (B 1875 DIED 1980) (SAMUEL MCCRACKEN), ALTA ALICE BRANDT (1877-1947) (GEORGE P SHUPERT) AND CHARLES EDWARD BRANDT (1879-1972)(ELIZABETH MILLER) As they spent quite a few decades in Fairfield County, I'm surprised that I'm having so much difficulty finding any more information about them. Lewis Brandt did work for the Cleveland, Cincinnati, Chicago, and St. Louis Railroad in the 1880's and 1890's. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Vicki L. Rootsweb has lost one of the two T1s that our main Web server uses. UUNET, our backbone provider, is working on the problem. Problems like this usually get resolved within a few hours at worst. In the meantime, they are closing down pieces of RootsWeb to try to limp through. So far, we have taken down the following virtual domains and Web/FTP sites: IIGS.ORG USGENWEB.NET/ORG USGENWEB ARCHIVES (anonymous FTP access disabled) WORLDGENWEB.ORG Other than the USGenWeb Archives, rootsweb has not taken down any individual sites. Consequently, our regular users should still be able to find the resources they routinely use. Rootsweb will be restored to normal operations as soon as they can. You can bet everyone is doing everything possible. [considerable detail deleted here] >Helen McDiarmid "Helen McDiarmid" <helenmcd@globalnet.co.uk> The folks near Baltimore will be giving better answers and you have already discovered the SSDN, so I'll just throw in a few on-line goodies that spice things up while not necessarily adding much immediate detail :-). I hope these sites are of interest to you (someone presumably unfamiliar with USA resources) as well as to folks just getting started in genealogy on-line: 1. http://www.hamrick.com/names/ is a neat site that can tell you if and where certain last names were common. Enter FREECE and ask about all years and you will find that it was one of the 50,000 most common names in the USA in 1920 but has become much less common since. Oddly, it was only common in Ohio in 1920. Apparently, your Freece family was not the first to go there. Unfortunately, your relative in question is probably not one of those Freeces because he arrived in October of 1920. More unfortunate yet, the 1930 US census won't be released for another four years or so, probably in 2002. 2. Baltimore, as you know, is in Fairfield County, OH. In addition to the Fairfield County mailing list, which you have found, there are two really good web sites for Fairfield County and you can do follow-up research both places: A. The Fairfield County Genealogical Society has their own domain name and site at http://www.fairfieldgenealogy.org/ . They are VERY active and can probably locate a modern-day FREECE for you. Carol Swinehart is one of the most active members and has been extremely helpful to me in the past, but there are no doubt many others as nice as she. B. The Ohio GenWeb site for Fairfield County is at http://www.greenapple.com/~ksmith/que.html where Karen Smith is the volunteer. She, too, is very active and helpful. I did not find any currently posted queries there for the Freece family, so why not be the first? 3. The US telephone directory can be searched at http://www.switchboard.com/bin/cgiqa.dll?MG= for listed people named Freece. There are 68 in the country, only seven of whom are in Ohio now. 4. Searching Yahoo and other engines is a good strategy for very unusual names. Unfortunately, all you might get are a lot of references to Freecell (the game) if you don't also specify genealogy. But using both words turns up six sites through http://www.yahoo.com , none of which appear to be related to your Freece line. (One is actually a typo for GREECE!) Other engines may have different successes. 5. http://www.rootsweb.com/rootsweb/searches/rslsearch.html is the search entry for the Rootsweb surname list. There are two people listed looking for Freece family, one says they came from Germany in 1820 and the other from Wales in 1890. The latter is YOU, Helen! (But it still has your AOL address in it so I hope that address is still valid). So, was it 1890 or 1920? If it was 1890, that means you can look in the 1910 census, and maybe in the 1890 census. (The 1900 census was lost to fire). 6. The Family Tree Maker site can give you a lot of information, even if you don't order the CD's from them. It's at http://www.familytreemaker.com/srchzz.html . It tells you that there is one Ethel in the SSDN, for example, and that there is a family on one of their CD's with an Ethel in Ohio. It may be worthwhile tracking down that one in a library except for the fact that for "Frank Freece", the same page turns up nobody by that name. 7. There are several other sites where you can search a surname list. Most of these sites either sell access to the list or exchange access in return for you providing your data to them. I've never had much luck with those approaches but you may get lucky. Good hunting to you. Dave Crane Houston, Texas
Dear Friends, I received permission from the Eagle-Gazette to use the 1956 Juanita Grant column about Lancaster in 1903. You can read it at www.geocities.com/Heartland/Acres/4585/lanc1903.html (I will dress it up later). If you recognize any of your family in the article and would like to link their names to your site, please let me know. Sheila Rider North Carolina
Can any body help Helen? "Helen McDiarmid" <helenmcd@globalnet.co.uk> John Date: Sat, 4 Jul 1998 17:10:44 +0100 From: "Helen McDiarmid" <helenmcd@globalnet.co.uk> To: Maggie_Ohio-L@rootsweb.com Message-ID: <01bda766$4c8aa7a0$LocalHost@default> Subject: FREECE family search in Baltimore Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Here goes again - I have made several attempts now to send this request for help or information but first sent it to the wrong address, then in the wrong format and then, apparently to the wrong addess again - so I am hoping that I will be lucky this time. I am looking for information on the family of my father's cousin, he very much wanted me to trce them for him as he lost touch some years ago. I should explain that I live in Sussex, england and my father was Welsh, from Cardiff. His cousins family consisted of Frank FREECE, his wife, Ethel FREECE nee EVANS and their daughter Eileen FREECE. I don't have much info but accroding to my grandmother's diary the family emigrated from Wales in October 1920 and settled in Baltimore, Ohio - I have three photos that give Baltimore as place of residence - the diary also says that Frank FREECE died June 30th 1951 but I have not found anything for him in the Social Security Death Index. There is an entry for an Ethel FREECE which seems to fit: SSN (Social Security No) 290-48-7334: SNDX F620 NAME FREECE, ETHEL BIRTH 03-06-1899; IS (Issuing State OHIO DEATH 01-00-1981; R-ZIP(Zip code of last known Residence) 43105 RC (State of primary residence) OH My father told me that Frank FREECE was a sherrif and was involved in the capture of Public Eneny No 1. I preseume there were several of these but I think he meant Derringer?) and he also said that he was one of the first people in the States to have plastic surgery but I do not know how much truth there is to either of these stories or whether my father knew this from personal contact or got it from other family members. Anyway, I would be really grateful for any help anyone over there can give. My husband and I have visisted the states several times in the past and have been to Colubus, Ohio three times but always on very short visits and have been unable to travel up to the Baltimore area - we both really love the U.S.A. and have met some really lovely, friendly people there. Thanks for your time Yours Helen McDiarmid "Helen McDiarmid" <helenmcd@globalnet.co.uk>

I have not made this offer in a few months. I have cross-indexed about 2750 early Fairfield Co., OH marriages that were taken from old newsclippings. They are from years ca 1803-1830's. You can not say they are documented, but were printed in the newspaper as marriage licenses applied for at the courthouse. Most of them only give the month and year and not an exact date, but are helpful if you are stuck for a maiden name, etc and gives you some help in going on with your research for records that are documented. So my offer is up again to give you the info online for your requests. Darleen Ritchey Berens
