    1. [OHFAIRFI-L] LOOKUPS
    2. I wrote to the genealogical society although I think it went to Karen directly by mistake expressing my veiws on this information sharing business. Since then two more letters have appeared pointing out something that I didn't think of in my letter how much free advertisment these lookups give their publications. We need to work together to make genealogy work and when we do we all benefit. And I agree with those other writers who wrote defending the need to share in saying God bless people like kind hearted Virginia I am happy to say she helped me out and got me to look at the publications on the genealogical societies page. I didn't know it was there until she said something about it. Nancy Conrad A proud lookup voluteer from St. Joseph County Indiana

    3. When I saw Virginia's nice offer I called it to my husband's attention thusly: "some people are so much more thoughtful than I am. I own the same book and never thought to make such a nice simple offer." Now I have read the copyright laws and also the screen that constantly pops up on FamilyTreeMaker about sharing a limited amount. I do not feel Virginia was treated fairly. Jayne

    3. I was out yesterday doing Swiss research when all the exchanges on the list were going on so I did not have the opportunity to comment earlier. Thought you might like to stop by at the site listed below and see what the government has to say about copyright. It may or may not help clarify some statements that we made yesterday and today on this list. Copyright discussions always seem to stir up problems on the mailing lists that I have been on. Fortunately or unfortunately depending on your point of view, there are laws that deal with this subject. http://lcweb.loc.gov/copyright Hope we can all put this behind us and move on. 1. [OHFAIRFI-L] EXPLANATION
    2. Karen S. Smith
    3. I would like to take this opportunity to explain to all those subscribed to the list that I (or the society) was not chastising anyone for offering lookups. We decided that this would be a good opportunity to try and make everyone aware of our situation. Suggestions & comments are always welcome! I sent a message to Virginia with what I thought was an explanation that the society is not upset with her and that we were just trying to make everyone aware of our position. There was never any intention to hurt or upset anyone on this list. It pleases me to hear that those on the list are supporting each other (as genealogists I hope we will all stick together). Please do not hesitate to contact any of the officers of the society if you have questions or concerns about this matter. Karen S. Smith Corresponding Secretary, Fairfield Co. Chapter OGS

    3. To: Karen and the Fairfield County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society; You wrote: " if the information contained in the publications for sale by the Fairfield Co. Chapter OGS is continually given free of charge then our society faces serious consequences." ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` ` If I did the wrong thing by offering to look up names in the Berne Township Cemetery book, then I apologize. That certainly was not my intention. I did credit the information source, and tried to encourage list-readers to order their own book, by giving them Carol's email address and suggesting they contact her. I am a relative newcomer to genealogy research, compared to many of you. When I started researching my father's people 3 years ago, I had no idea where to start. However, due to the kindness of many total strangers, and chance bits and pieces of information they have given to me, I have progressed from not being sure of my grandparents names and not knowing the names of my father's siblings, to as far back as details of my gggg grandparents, and possibly the ship he came here on in 1731. It was only because of the willingness of so many kind strangers to provide me with pieces of information, that I was able to accomplish this. Naively, I just assumed that all genealogy researchers help each other in this way, because that has been my personal experience. I am a 72 year old handicapped person, on a limited income, at this time also undergoing chemotherapy for Lymphoma. I could not have afforded to purchase all the publications from the various areas where my ancestors lived. (Pennsylvania and several areas in Ohio). I only invested in this book because the majority of my ancestors seemed to have lived in Fairfield County for a number of years. I suppose I just take it for granted that there must be many other people like myself out there, who also could not afford to buy a book just to research one or two "stray" ancestors. It never was my intention, nor did I even consider the possibility, that my offer could hurt your organization in any way. I have only received several requests, and perhaps those persons who received information from your book (from me) might wish to send a donation to your Society as a token of their appreciation...or, order a copy of this excellent book for their own reference source. If they appreciated the information I sent them, I suggest that this is what they do. Would you give us an address to which they may write to the FF Chapter of the OGS? And perhaps a list (with prices) of the books and publications which you have available for purchase? I trust this will explain my offer, and the good intentions with which I made it. I was just trying to pass on the kindnesses I have received from others. Sincerely, Virginia Eckert O'Shea

    1. [OHFAIRFI-L] FREE LOOKUPS
    2. Karen S. Smith
    3. I am posting this message to the list on behalf of the executive committee of The Fairfield County Chapter of The Ohio Genealogical Society. We are all aware that a large portion of genealogical information is found by sharing. We do not begrudge any researcher of free information. However, if the information contained in the publications for sale by the Fairfield Co. Chapter OGS is continually given free of charge then our society faces serious consequences. By abstracting and publishing information available in public records and then offering that information for sale we are able to continue our efforts of making more and more information available to our fellow genealogists. Please do not hesitate to contact the society if you would like to have the index to one of our publications checked. When we answer we will be more than happy to give you the information so that you may purchase the publication should you decide to. We would ask that you keep in mind our efforts to make as much information available to as many researchers as we can while you help each other. In speaking with genealogists from societies around the country this past week at the FGS/OGS Conference, the dissemination of free information and the consequences in store for the continuation of societies was greatly stressed. We encourage all subscribers to this list to consider this matter. Any and all suggestions will be appreciated and considered. Karen S. Smith Corresponding Secretary, Fairfield Co. Chapter OGS

    3. I purchased a copy of the book by this name, from the Fairfield Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society, and as I was scanning through it, searching for my Eckert ancestors, I thought I might be able to help some of you who don't have access to it. It contains very complete census information taken from gravestones...birth and death dates, relationships, and any other available information. So if you are wondering if any of your ancestors might be buried in any of the cemeteries in that area, I will be glad to look them up for you. You may email me privately at voshea@suffolk.lib.ny.us The cemeteries included in it are: Pleasant Hill, Delapp, Green, Westenbarger, Sharp, Lamott, Beck, Black Diamond - Schwartz, Old Catholic - St. Phillips, Brushy Fork, Erick, Mt. 3. I'm searching for the first wife of J. H. ALLSPAUGH. He's buried in Mound View in Mt. Vernon, Knox County, OH, with his second wife Mary Jane Reeder, whom he married in 1849. They married in Delaware County, her birth place. But all of his children by both wives were born in Fairfield County until at least 1852. The name of his first wife is unknown. I believe their first child, Emily, was born in Baltimore, Fairfield Co., OH on 26 Feb 1839. J.H. Allspaugh was born 25 Feb 1815 in Lancaster, Fairfield County, so I suspect that his first wife was from there, or they married there. But I cannot find any reference to her. Can anyone find a lady whose married name was ALLSPAUGH (that spelling is uncommon but is almost certainly correct), born about 1815-1820, who died between 1840 and 1848? She is probably buried alone or with her parents. I would really appreciate a clue. Dave Crane Houston, Texas

His father remarried after his mother died he had many 1/2 siblings. HIs father was a school teacher after the war although Joseph never attended school himself, he worked on his fathers farm. Joseph left FAirfield co around 1876 to go west on his own, he never kept contact with his family and now we do not have much info to start with, he had a brother(?) who went to see him in Portland OR named John. Either William or Joseph patented a war tool but the relatives left alive are unclear on the facts of this. Only one living decendant of Joseph today Fred William MORRISON can not remember anything about his father who died when Fred was only 13. At the time Fred was born 1930 his father was 67. please write to ronda morrison ramor@gte.net Carol Swinehart cshart@greenapple.com Admistrator of OHFAIRFI-L OHFAIRFI-L@rootsweb.com Fairfield County OGS Webpage: http://www.fairfieldgenealogy.org Fairfield County Genweb: http://www.fairfieldgenealogy.org/genweb.html Searching Fairfield County Families: Swinehart, Homrighouser, Betz,Foltz,Quickel,Anspach,Spohn,Troutman,Zartman Church Archive Links: http://www.greenapple.com/~cshart/chlinks.html
