My name is Jim Johnston and I live in Santa Maria, California. I have many ancestors that were from Fairfield County from at least the very early 1800's. I am researching the following surnames from around New Salem: Phelps, Wiseman, Hooper, Swayze, and Miers. I am looking for the parents of Hezekiah Phelps and wife Mary Miers, Lorenzo Dow Wiseman and wife Frances Swayze Hooper. Thanks
I have found the same type book, same source, only Cemeteries of ClearCreek Twp, to be very helpful. Would be glad to help others with look ups in it. Really, though, if I can find one of your people in it, or in the others, you will probably benefit haveing the copy yourself, as you would continue to find others of their families in it. But no use to have one at all in None of your relatives are there. So will look up one for you in Clearcreek Twp. Madora Matboyd@aol.com
Hi folks, Does anyone have information about the following marriage? It's possible BRITGIHAM may be a misspelled version of BRITTINGHAM. If so, she's probably related. Some of you are a little confused about the marriage material for Fairfield County that is online so I offer this explanation. Good hunting! http://www.fairfieldgenealogy.org/marr00-11.html These are marriages that were taken from Land, Probate, Newspaper and Church records from 1800 to 1811 with divorces. Ye Ancient Swain material for the years 1800 to 1811 is noted in these marriages. http://www.fairfieldgenealogy.org/swain.html Ye Ancient Swains - Only Newspaper info on early marriages in Fairfield County goes beyond 1811 Carol Swinehart cshart@greenapple.com Admistrator of OHFAIRFI-L OHFAIRFI-L@rootsweb.com Fairfield County OGS Webpage: http://www.fairfieldgenealogy.org Fairfield County Genweb: http://www.fairfieldgenealogy.org/genweb.html Searching Fairfield County Families: Swinehart, Homrighouser, Betz,Foltz,Quickel,Anspach,Spohn,Troutman,Zartman Church Archive Links: http://www.greenapple.com/~cshart/chlinks.html
Thought I would share with you the fact that I wore my Fairfield Co OH Genealogical Society t-shirt to the Kansas State Historical Society library today. Yes, people stopped to chat about OH research, and I was able to brag about the society, it's publications, newsletter, and research help. It is a grand way to make new friends! Thanks Cousin for the shirt! Gayle (Olpe, KS) gayle1@kansas.net
Early Fairfield Co. Marriages from old newsclippings 1801-1836 are now up and running on the Fairfield Co. GenWeb page. Now you can go and dig for yourself and have lots of fun. It is under Ye Ancient Swains on the page. The url is: http://www.fairfieldgenealogy.org Good Luck in your research, Darleen Berens
Hi, You can access the Center for Archival Collections at BSUS via their web site. http://www.bgsu.edu/colleges/library/cac/cac.html Within this site are links to the card catalog at BGSU (BGLINK) and to Ohio Link. The Ohio Link is a system that connects to some of Ohio's other college libraries. Their phone number is (419)372-2411 Sheila
There are some sites that are just so good you have to share them with others - Since most of the people that pasted thru Fairfield County came from and went to somewhere else the following site might be of help to you. It has links to church records, cemetery records, bible records for many states in the U.S.A. http://members.aol.com/ssmadonna/religion.htm
Hello FF Rooter's WOW !!!!! How active this list has become in a week. I'm sorry I went on vacation and was forced to sign-off. Therefore, I'm just getting into the end of the discussion. I agree with those doing genealogy on a budget. To buy a book or CD, with the "hope" of finding that ancestor and finding that you have preformed an exercise in futility and spent money to do it. Though I have never used free look-up service yet! It is a service needed and if advertises books, pamphlets, or organizations so be it. At least you know what you need and value is there. Ever buy a pair of shoes with out trying them on? Enough said, now back to genealogy. I just purchased a book of New England Marriages prior to 1700 by Torrey because many of my ancestors are listed. This may not have much to do with Fairfield genealogy because migration pattens of New Englanders migrated to nothern Ohio. But if like my Fairfield ancestors moving north during the depression, looking for employment and marrying a northerner as mine did, I may be help someone with New England connection, if they have gotten back that far. I recently purchased the three books with genealogical abstracts from the Lancaster Gazette, they will probably replace my Berne Twp. Cemetery book which I have had to have rebound, as my genealogical bible from Fairfield Co. I feel like I am seeing "the big picture", where people came from, who they married, children that were born and died between censuses, divorces, cemeteries I never heard of, Civil War information, where people went when they left Fairfield Co., sometimes even several generations of a family. What a great service Jean and Stuart Collier, THANK YOU! Joanne Landon S.F., CA

However, Henry's mother, Catherine SEITZ Keller, is the sister of my ggg grandfather, Lewis SEITZ Sr., and Henry's father, Henry KELLER Sr. is supposedly the brother of my gggg grandmother, Mary KELLER Beery. Lewis and his family, Catherine and her family and three other Seitz sisters with their families moved to Fairfield County in the early 1800s. Lewis came from Virginia, the others from York County, Penn. Mary Keller Beery died in Virginia, but her husband, Nicholas BEERY Jr., and his second wife and several of his children from both marriages moved from Rockingham County, Va., to Fairfield County. According to the 1924 book, "Descendants of Henry Keller of York County, Pennsylvania and Fairfield County, Ohio," By E.S. Shumaker, your Henry (Henry Jr. in the book) was born 21 Apr 1793, probably in Shrewsbury Township. Also, the book uses the anglicized Hoover instead of Huber. If you have not seen the Shumaker book, LDS has it on microfiche. I only have a handful of pages here at home, but it appears that your information on the children of Henry Keller Jr. and Catharine Huber is more complete than Shumaker's. Hope some of this helps. -- Karl Seitz Researching SEITZ and BEERY in Fairfield County, Ohio.

Seeking others researching the family of Henry and Catharine (Huber) Keller, who were married in Fairfield Co 31 Oct 1819. Henry was born c1793 in York Co, PA and died in Fairfield Co in 1870. Margaret McCabe, born Fairfield County, Ohio, 20 Nov 1805, married John Jacob Klinker, Fairfield County Dec 1832. Searching for Margaret's parents....suspect Isaiah McCabe to be her father, as he owned land next to John Jacob's father Henry Klinker, in Fairfield County. Isaiah is mentioned in early census's but so far can't link Margaret as child. Does anyone have information on Isaiah's children, death or burial place? Thank you Gary Chantry <chantryg@iomet.com
I am also on limited income and can not afford all the reference material to purchase especially for one name or chance. It is one thing to verify a name another to verify the relationship in the book is yours. Most contacts for index look up only tell you if the name is in the book. You still spend money to order and find wrong person. Then replies which state "spend" money to advertise in our newsletter:" Sorry we step on TOES but would like to have the opportunity to research on a limited income also! I can not spend the thousands of $$ I hear people have spend for one name. Have just about given up do to cost. When I verify a family has lived in a area then I will get the book and have even spent the money to join Societies. My money does not grow on trees! Wish it did.
