Mike, Do you know where you found the "Draper Collection" that has material on Boone and others? How about the finding guide. It is a new book to me, but any lead is better than none at all! Suzy

Suzy (and anyone else with a Daniel Boon connection), If you have not checked (or heard of) the "Draper Collection" you should look into it. Draper did quite a bit of historical reasearch in KY and quite a bit on Daniel Boon (among other places/people). It is complex trying to find stuff in it (you'd have to look at a finding guide) but it might have some helpful material. I have only looked at it a couple of times (i.e. 2) and do not know it well enough to give any more comment on it than this (but perhaps someone else who is more familiar with it can). Good luck, - Mike

I thought I had joined this list before, but have received now messages... I am most interested to hear from any folks who have MYERS ancestors in Fairfield County in the 1800's. Particularly those who might have had an ancestral relative named Catherine MYERS who married George Grove KARNES (CARNES) on 23 SEPT 1851. Could she have been related to Andrew & Martha MYERS who are buried in Betzer Cemetery on Pickerington Rd? (or, is it a coincidence that GG & Catherine KARNES son & his wife are buried next to them?) Very interested also to hear from anyone who has information re George Grove/Grovnor KARNES/CARNES...who supposedly had something to do with the establishment of OSU..and was a school teacher in Fairfield County in the last half of 1800's. I know he was alive in 1895, but have not been able to find a death certificate or any cemetery information. Would VERY much appreciate any help. I was in your lovely town or Landcaster on a research expedition in June, but could make no headway in your library or courthouse. Thanks, Sandra in TX karnes@myriad.net
Anyone else researching these surnames in Fairfield County? They were in towns of Amanda and Bremen.
Hi, I am looking for information on where to look in Fairfield county for early records for New Reading (originally Overmeyerstettle near Somerset). Specifically I am looking for information when my family lived there in circa 1808 to circa 1817. They were German Reform. This area is now in Perry county, but during this time period it was part of Fairfield. I have not been able to find any reference to them owning land in the area (I've seen the deed indexes on Microfilm at Salt Lake City) but strongly suspect that the Samuel Zeigler who is shown on a list of voters in New Reading from c. 1816-1817 is my Samuel Zeigler (right before the family moved up to Richland County). I would like to take a trip to this area, but would like some suggestions on where to concentrate my efforts (I would probably have only one business day when most things would be open). Specifically, I would appreciate anyone who would have ideas of who might have German Reform (or possibly Lutheran) records in this area at this time (3 of Samuel's kids were born "near Somerset" between 1808 and 1815). Or anyplace else that might be fruitful in my search. (The family originally came from Switzerland in c1805 and I'd love to know where they were from 1805 to 1808 and if they were naturalized). Any and all suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks in advance, - Mike White mdwhite@ucdavis.edu

I often get questions about church record availability which I enjoy answering, but for those of you who are looking for church records in other areas keep this in mind. Small churches are usually in charges, classis or whatever name the denomination happens to give a church who shares a pastor with other churches. Therefore, even if the specific church that you are looking for has closed you need to check with the other churches in the charge etc to find where the records might be. This may meaning going across county lines to archives in areas you have never dreamed of to find these elusive records. It is important if possible to contact someone with knowledge of the area (county historian) you are looking for in order to find out the possible charge history of the church you are seeking. Some have noticed my library link to the local library is not working. I will check and see if I can get that working again, but often it is because the library computer network is down. Does anyone have anything on ALLSPAUGH? I'm at a dead end with "J.H. ALLSPAUGH". He must have been an alien from Mars because he has no parents. On the other hand, there is some evidence that he was born in Fairield County about 1815. The 1850 census of Baltimore, Liberty Township, Fairfield County contains a "J.H. Allspaugh". He is 37 years old and his (apparently new) wife Mary is 21. He has a daughter eleven, twin boys age ten, and a 6-month old boy. This man and his wife are buried in Mound Cemetery, Knox County. He is Joseph Henry and she is Mary Jane Reeder of Delaware County; they married in Delaware County on 15 March 1849. The children are Emily, twins Samuel and Harrison, and infant Henry Clay. Who were the parents of "J.H."? Nor do I know the name of his first wife, but would dearly love to find it. Dave Crane Houston, Texas
Does anyone out there know anything about a Harriet Kimmey Lytle she was born in DE. about 1798. She married William Lytle/Litle and had two children: Alfred Kimmey Lytle born in DE. about1826 Harriet Lytle born about 1831 in OH. Fairfield or Hocking County She died in 1834 in Fairfield or Hocking County. I know nothing about where she went to church or where in these Counties she might be buried. I know nothing about her parents or siblings I have hit a brick wall with her so I am hoping someone else might be researching this Lytle or Kimmey line. Nancy Conrad
John W. Scholl's massive _Scholl-Sholl-Shull Genealogy - The Colonial Branches_, Grafton Press, New York, NY (1930) is a very useful tool for those studying this family line. While it features a name index, it does not have a location index. While looking for possible connections to my family tree, I wrote down the name, birthdate, deathdate, and page number of every Shull/Scholl listed in this book who resided, for any length, in Fairfield County. I can e-mail an ASCII-text, comma-delimited file to anyone of interest. Just make a request to paulr@blind.state.ia.us BTW, I am still looking for Emma Shull (1847-1907), who first appears in Fairfield County in the 1870 census and married my gr-gr-grandfather, Charles Rabe, two years later. Her obituary says she was born in Sugar Grove, but I have completely frustrated in finding any mention of her in any Shull family in Fairfield County in the 1860 or 1850 census, or in the records of Trinity/Sponagle Lutheran Church (where every OTHER Shull seems to be from!). Her 1907 obituary also lists three sisters in KANSAS, and OHIO siblings Mary Kull (wife of Lewis) and Louis Shull; but these facts have not helped me a bit. The obituary may have mistakenly referred to Louis, the brother of Susan Catherine Shull. Cathy married Charles' brother, William Rabe!
