    3. I must have missed something somewhere..am I understanding correctly that the Fairfield Library might be willing to find and copy an obit? For what time periods?? I have been unable to find a death record for Charles E. Karnes (died in early 1909) or his father, George Grov Carnes or Karnes, who died sometime after 1895 and was living in Landcaster. I feel sure he must have had an obit as he had been a long time school teacher in the area. I was under the understanding that death records were maintained at the Ohio Dept of Health from Dec 1908 on, but just had my check returned with a letter stating that from Dec 1908-1945 the records would be in the local Dept of Vital Statistics??? The microfilm for this period at the OH Hist.Center in Columbus was unreadable. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. Sandra in TX

    3. Karen, When we write to the Fairfield Library for a copy of the obit, how much should we send for the obit. It takes them time to get it and make a copy. I always send an SASE, but how about cost? I have a couple I would like to send for. One of those was shown in the abstracts. Suzy

District Library, 219 N. Broad St., Lancaster, OH 43130 or to The Fairfield Co. Chapter OGS, PO Box 1470, Lancaster, OH 43130-0570. When writing you will need to include the date of death because there is no index to the obituaries outside of those appearing in the Genealogical Abstracts From The Lancaster (Ohio) Gazette, Vols. 1,2 &3 which have been published by the Chapter. These cover the time period from 1826-1890. Karen S. Smith Corresponding Secretary, Fairfield Co. Chapter OGS

    3. Suzy, The Draper Manuscripts have been microfilmed. I know that one of the family history centers in Dayton, OH has the complete set on microfilm. I think the Cincinnati Library also does. I know there are a couple of finding guids to the manuscripts that I've seen - I've always asked the librarian or found it on their computers searching on the word "Draper". I suspect that there is a decent chance that a larger library (like perhaps a University) would have them. You could probably get them from the LDS main library - but I think there are quite a few microfilm reels. I'd at least check with a local library or family history center and ask about the Draper Manuscripts. For some general information, you might want to check out: http://www.chadwyck.com/mfcat/mf010.html & http://www.webpub.com/~jhagee/draper.html Charla, I do have a Deborah White in my family, but as she is my sister I don't think she'd like me saying she was born prior to 1838. :) Actually my WHITEs are from AR and I have only managed to track them back to GA circa 1810-1820. If there is a family relation to the WHITEs in Ohio, I do not know it. Sorry I cannot be of more help. Later, - Mike

    2. Hi Mike & Suzy I've heard the original Draper manuscripts are on file at the University of Wisconsin but expect there are copies at other libraries. Believe these are papers and journals of Lyman C. Draper which contain accounts of historical and some genealogical information. I'd love to know if they're "on-line." Mike, In the off-chance that you may be a cousin, I'd like to ask if you have a Deborah White in your family. Deborah married Peter Fox 4 March 1838 in Hocking County, Ohio. They were my gr-gr-grandparents. I've never been able to find Deborah in any of the White families in that area of Ohio. I know it's a long shot but had to ask. Happy researching. charla in nj marchpubs@juno.com or marchpubs1@aol.com
