Looking to prove or disprove that Elizabeth ???? , the wife of Hieronimus/Haronimus Rolle/Roly/Rolley/Roley is the daughter of Jacob Showley and sister of Jacob and somehow related to Casper Shaeffner. The land description follows. Haronimus Roly's Land description was found in Deed Book M-572, 573 dated 23 Oct 1820. This land was bought from Jacob Showley & Ursula his wife and Casper Shaeffner heirs of Jacob Showley deceased all of Fairfield County. Haronimus of Fairfield County, OH paid $200 for part of the S 1/2 of Section 14, Township 16 Range 19 (formerly patented to Jacob Showley on 26 Jul 1805). Beginning at a post in the southeran boundary of said 1/2 section 80 perches from the SE corner of said 1/2 section thence west 80 perches to apost thence N 160 perches to the place of beginning containing 80 acres. Dated 30 March 1820 Recorded 23 Oct 1820. Haronimus/Hieronimus Roley is buried in the Showley Cemetery. It is unknown where Elisabeth is buried - she died about 40 years after he. Hello everyone, My name is Vana and I live in central Washington state. I am looking for the HOOPER and SWAYZE families in Fairfield Co. Jacob HOOPER has an interesting history. The information below comes from the "1918 Standard History of Adams and Wells County": "Mr. HOOPER [Paul Granville Hooper] comes of old Maryland stock. His grandfather Jacob HOOPER was born in Wales and came with three brothers to the American colonies as early as 1760. ... Jacob HOOPER located in Maryland and fought for several years for independence during the Revolution. He was wounded at the battle of Stoney Point. After his marriage he located near Baltimore at Jones Falls, where he conducted a farm. He also had the contract for constructing the first railroad in the United States, now part of the Baltimore & Ohio System. This was a crude piece of railroading, the rails being wooden stringers with strap iron on the upper surface. The cars were small and were drawn by horses. Late in life Jacob HOOPER moved to Fairfield, Ohio, and died there at the age of ninety-five." 1 Jacob HOOPER b. Wales d. Does anyone know how Sugar Grove, OH got its name? Sheila
Dear Friends, A little while back someone (maybe Carol Swinehart) mentioned where one could order a copy of Hervey Scott's History of Fairfield County. Some book reprinting company, I think. Does anyone remember? Thanks, Sheila Rider
While visiting in Lancaster last week, I was privileged to attend the October genealogy society meeting. For you tolks you have not had the opportunity to personally visit in this county, I want to tell you the Fairfield Chapter of the Ohio Genealogy society is an active group. Their speaker Thursday evening explained the information we might find looking at deeds. An officer reported that their programs for 1999 are almost all lined up, and sounded interesting enough to me that if I were to win the lottery I would "jet back" for several of them. This group has published a monumental amount of information in the last twenty years. On Friday evening the group will host their annual lock-in at the Lancaster Public Library. Perhaps one of the officers will send us a report when it is over. So folks, if you are going to be in Fairfield County on the third Thursday of the month, contact the group and find where their meeting will be held. And to all of you we met last week, thank you for a warm welcome! Glen and Gayle Gardner Olpe, KS gayle1@kansas.net
The Ricketts and Swinehart families were somehow connected and lived on the Perry - Fairfield County border. Have you checked Perry Co, OH census for your Mary Ricketts?? It could have been the head of household, the spouse, one of the kids, the hired hand, or even the people living down the road. The census should always be used as a clue, not necessarily as a fact. Her >name doesn't show in the 1850 or 1860 Census for Fairfield Co. OH. ... >Phyllis in Florida >jayvids-mom.pj@juno.com Phyllis, Mary's family may have been living in a neighboring county. You might want to check the surrounding ones. Also, I have had the name "Mary" listed as "Polly" (which I never have figured out... but then I never understood why "Jack" was a nickname for "John"). I have also had people listed by middle names, so you might also keep an eye out for that. As for the 1850 census, she may not have been listed depending upon the date the census was taken. While census forms say 1850, the census year was actually from July 1, 1849 to June 30, 1850 (and can be off by more than that in a few rather rare instances). Also, depending upon where you got her birth information, it too could be off by a couple of years. I have a number of cases where tombstones and death certificates have the wrong birth date. In fact, my g-g-grandfather Solomon Zeigler seemed to have forgotten he was born in 1842 as by around 1880, he was listing 1840 as his birth date. Of course, as long as I am exhausting possibilities, I have seen ages on censuses wrong a number of times. Anyway, if I happen to see anything on your Mary, I'll try to let you know. Good luck. - Mike
Sheila, If your ancestor died without a will, he would have died "intestate". If he owned land, then there would still be a probate on his estate. If he died without land, then he was by definition a "pauper" (even if he had lots of $$). Even then I have been told there should be pauper records, but I have yet to see anything. I have a Zachariah Rice who died in 1850 and his son later that month shows up with a note claiming his father sold the land to him... and as a result there was no probate (which is very irritating). Now, if you are only going by the index of the deeds, then I would suggest you check that 1865 land sale. If it was sold as part of an estate settlement, he might still have been listed as the grantor. A careful reading of the deed record should tell you if this is the case. Also, is it possible that the seller was Joseph Phillips, Jr? Another place to check is cemetery listings for a record of his and his wife's grave. (I do not know what is available for Fairfield Co, so someone else will have to help you on this). As for other sources, I can suggest 2 that come to mind. One is the 1860 Mortality schedule (it might mention him or his wife if you are lucky enough to have had them die during this time). Also, if you know all of his children, he might be living with one of them in 1860 (if he was still alive). Another long-shot is to go into the county records and check all of the indexes for names of the kids. Sometimes people will feel they didn't get their "fair share" and will sue... even a decade later sometimes. That is about all I can think of for now. Perhaps others have some suggestions. Good luck, - Mike > >Dear Friends: > >I would like the advice of any of the more experienced rooters on the matter >of finding some sort of record of the death of my ggg grandfather, Joseph >Phillips, Sr. He emigrated to the US in 1828 >and purchased land in Berne Twp in 1929 and in subsequent years. Is anybody in Fairfield Co. OH. researching the above name? Need lots of help. Mary L. Ricketts, b. Mar. 3, 1850, supposedly in Fairfield Co. OH. Her name doesn't show in the 1850 or 1860 Census for Fairfield Co. OH. On Dec. 26, 1869, she married Jacob Litsenberger. Mary died Oct. 28, 1870 and is buried in Pleasant Valley, Kansas. Their children were: Ecelia; Walter; George: Edmond; and Catherine Elizabeth. Please reply to the address listed under my name. Phyllis in Florida jayvids-mom.pj@juno.com
Dear Listers, I am writing to the list in hopes that someone will know Teresa Lynn Ransom, who was raised in Lancaster, Ohio. For the last several months, I have tried to help Teresa's siblings put together the mystery of locating their sister. After a lot of letters and telephone conversations, I was finally able to recover an adoption birth record. Teresa was born Teresa Lynn Hardy on 07 Sept. 1947 in Athens, Ohio. When she was about 5 years old she was placed in foster care and a few years later, adopted by Robert Scott Ransom and Mary Fay Ihle Ransom, once of Lancaster. After locating Mr. Ransom a few weeks ago, I discovered that Teresa had been murdered by her husband (about 15-20 years ago) while living in Oregon. No one seems to remember the name of Teresa's husband, only that he was also from Lancaster, Ohio. We are now trying to find Teresa's married name and to whom she was married. We hope to find exactly when and where her murder occurred and find the site of her burial, which I am told is in Oregon. If anyone can help bring forth the answers I have yet to find then please do so and help me put this to rest for her family. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Debi Foster Catlettsburg, KY
Dear Friends: I would like the advice of any of the more experienced rooters on the matter of finding some sort of record of the death of my ggg grandfather, Joseph Phillips, Sr. He emigrated to the US in 1828 and purchased land in Berne Twp in 1929 and in subsequent years. He appears in the 1830, 40 & 50 censuses, but not in the 1860 so far as I have searched. Land record indexes indicate that he and his wife sold some land in 1853, 58 & 59, and he alone in 1865, which would suggest that he was still living in 1860. The Wills & Estates index was recently checked and he does not appear in it. My questions: If he owned land when he died, should there have been some sort of estate record even if he didn't leave a will? If he was selling off his land every few years, does that suggest to anyone that he might have been ridding himself of land he was too old to farm and perhaps owned none when he died? What other source might I check if he died before 1867 and I can't get access to the St.. Mary parish records for that period? Any thoughts on how to proceed with this would be appreciated. Sheila Rider

Death certificates from 1945 to the present are held at the Ohio Dept. of Health (Vital Statistics Division). Death certificates from December 1908 - December 1944 are held at the Ohio Historical Society. Even if the microfilm at OHS if bad, if you can provide the volume and certificate number, the name of deceased, date and place of death (all listed on the index), they will make a copy from the original death certificate. County and local health departments also have death certificates on file from December 1908 to present. Deaths before December 1908 will be found in the probate court of the county where the death occurred. Hope this helps :-) Amy ---------- > From: Sandra Karnes <Karnes@myriad.net> > To: OHFAIRFI-L@rootsweb.com > Subject: Re: [OHFAIRFI-L] Re: obits > Date: Saturday, October 03, 1998 3:07 PM > > I must have missed something somewhere..am I understanding correctly > that the Fairfield Library might be willing to find and copy an obit? > > For what time periods?? > > I have been unable to find a death record for Charles E.
