    1. [OHFAIRFI-L] Re:Buffington/Miller/Sinift/Sain/Turner
    2. Hi, I am new to this list, however; not new to genealogy. For over 25 years I have been researching names connected with Fairfield County. With some I have been successful with others - I am still in infancy. I would love to hear from anyone interested in the following Fairfield County residents: Jacob Sinift (Siniff, Senft, Sanift etc) B. 1775 died 26 Nov 1849 wife Catharine (probably Sain). B. 1778 died 8 Nov. 1844, Fairfield County. Peter Miller b. 1782. Died 29 June 1805, married Mary Senft daug of Philip Sinift. daughter Mary married John Sinift (first cousins). David Buffington b 1762, Romney, Va. d. 6 Oct 1836, Fairfield Co. married Margaret ?. Dorcas Loretta Turner, b 1808 Fairfield Co., Oh. d. 2 May (July) 1877, Paulding Co. Oh. daughter of William Turner and unknown. I am particularly interested in learning if anyone can confirm the Sinift-Sain marriage and also anything about William Turner. He appears to have died and left three minor children. Karen McKellar

    3. Mike, Yup, headstones can show up in the weirdest places. Rumor has it that when one of the farms up in Richland County, OH was sold to a Mennonite family it was discovered that the basement floor was made up of old headstones from one of the two known "missing" cemeteries (one no one is sure ever existed... may have been an error on a early map... the other, the owner of the land was known to have pulled up the headstones and plowed the field - many, many years ago). No one seems to know what happened to these after the sale. I think it is felt that it would not be polite to ask about such an unusual subject. Still, I always wonder if one of my missing ancestors may have been in the group. 3. Here is a news item I thought I would pass along, maybe someone doing research in Mich. or researching the name SPALDING might be interested in this. If you have information about this person, you might try and contact Officer Sam Hartung. You might want to pass this article around to other researchers. Sincerely, Mike Creps Here is the article: Civil War Vet's Headstone Saved PITTSFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) -- The piece of stone awaiting recycling bore a strange inscription, one spotted by a sharp-eyed worker. It read: J.H. Spalding Co.K. 18 MICH.INF It was a Civil War-era tombstone. Since its discovery a month ago, police Officer Sam Hartung has tried to chronicle the history of the headstone and the life of J.H. Spalding. The 4-foot-tall, 1-foot-wide, 6-inch-deep headstone was being used as the bottom step of a porch and was taken to the City Concrete Crushing after the porch was dismantled, Hartung said. Company K of the 18th Michigan Infantry, which is what the inscription refers to, existed from 1862 to 1865. Veterans Affairs records show company member Julius H. Spalding was not killed in the Civil War. He lived in nearby Exeter Township and is believed to have died in the 1890s. Hartung is not sure where the veteran was buried, but hopes eventually to return the headstone. ``Our department wants this man to be honored,'' Hartung said. 1. [OHFAIRFI-L] LOCK-IN
    2. Karen S. Smith
    3. I am happy to report that the 4th annual lock-in held 23 Octber was a success! We had over 30 genealogists in attendance and a great time was had by all. One researcher from Fremont, Sandusky Co., Ohio has yet to miss a lock-in and has told us that he comes as much to see everyone as he does to do research. Thanks Tom! This year the genealogist that came the furthest was from Michigan. I should tell everyone that she has a cottage at the Lancaster Methodist Camp Grounds and for the last 3 years has stopped in at the library while in town to close the cottage for the winter and sees the notice about the lock-in being held that night. Talk about serendipity in genealogy! She is always in the right place at the right time. Plans for next year's lock-in are up in the air at this time as the library will be undergoing extensive renovations during 1999. I will be sure to post to the list as soon as we have any information about the 5th annual lock-in! Karen S. Smith Corresponding Secretary, Fairfield Co. Chapter OGS
