I am now begining to wonder if there ever was an Arthur Hensel born to William Hensel and Louise Dora McLaughlin Hensel. The only one that seems to be from the same region as Louise Dora McLaughlin and her husband is shown to be the son of Jacob. I cannot find anything on Louise Dora or her husband or son. I had an idea the Arthur may be the one from Fairfield county, Ohio who was their son but moved to New Jersey. I am not surprised that I am having so much trouble with Louise Dora and her husband, my McLaughlin's have been driving me crazy for years. I know Louise Droa lived, because her married name was in her mothers Obit. I guess sonner or later things will come together. Thanks again, the best to you and yours. Rick McLaughlin

Are you interested in him because it says born in Ohio or because you know he is related? The 1930 Census information is as follows: CENSUS: 1930 New Jersey, Essex Co., Mapplewood, E.D 495, Visitation 290 HENSEL, Arthur, Head, 54, married, age 22 when first married, b. OH, Father b. England, Mother b. NY, Occupation Barber HENSEL, Mary, wife, 59, married, age 27 when first married, b. NY, Father b. Poland, Mother b. Poland HENSEL, ?Audra/Andra?, daughter, 20, single, b. NJ, Father b. NY, Mother b. OH EYER, ?Qunette?, daughter, 16, single, b. NY, Father b. NY, Mother b. NY The birth places seem mixed up and confused so I thought another census would help. Found an Arthur C. Hensel in 9th Ward of Newark, Essex Co., New Jersey. His age is 34 which fits, his occupation is Barber which fits, and he has a daughter named Audre/Andre, age 11/12, which fits. On the 1910 Census it gives his place of birth as New York, Father b. Germany and Mother b. Germany. In 1910 he also has two sons: Arthur Jr. age 9 and b. in NJ and Courtney R. age 2 b. in NJ. Not a Hensel researcher. Just a curious recipient of the Fairfield Co., Ohio Mailing list. Linda

I did not keep and write down the sources to give credit where credit is due. the people who did a lot of work searching out and putting their work on the internet. Mostly this was for me in the begining but now it is for my Children and their children. I did want to have the family, as much as I could get them written down for them. I really do not know a lot about Genealogy, when I started I was older and not as sharpe as a younger person would be. So I fumble and go on the best that I can searching for those who were and are still living. I wish to thank you for your kindness and help. Rick McLaaughlin

I've been researching for almost 25 years now, and have been online since it's dawning. Years ago we researchers use to only dream about what the internet could do for genealogists, and now it's unfolding right before our very eyes. It's always been detective work, both pre and post internet days, but now our detective skills also involve knowing what the best search engines are :) Putting your info on the internet is also not a bad thing, and is often easier than most people realize. But unless the person posts their sources (which you should then also re-document), you need to get in contact with them and/or search for the source yourself. What may have happened -- and I have seen it happen time and time again -- is that someone posted a lineage somewhere. Others have seen it over the years, incorporated it into their own research, and reposted it. Seeing a lineage posted in numerous places at different sites and with different updated dates gives people the preconceived notion that it's just GOT to be right. I'm wondering if maybe that's what's happening with your Arthur Hensel, as I find the same data on the internet that you have, but never are there any sources posted. I would recommend you email them if they left an email id, or if that doesn't work, write the person who left their address at the LDS site -- and ask them what there sources are. If Arthur's father William George Hensel died in 1887, there may be some partition records or even a will that mentions Arthur and any other heirs including his wife. Then again, maybe the Arthur you're looking for is actually the Arthur who's listed as the son of Jacob and Jane Hensel in the 1880 census of Liberty Twp., Fairfield Co., Ohio [ED 202 page 24D or 169D (depending on which page number you use) visitation 206/218] Good luck! And keep me posted, as I do have several Hensels in my database, including William George. Any updates or corrections would definitely be welcomed.

From the Obit, I know she was married to a William Hensel because of the obit, but which William? I know the internet is not correct in all if its genealogy, the internet has my grnad fathers name wrong, instead of Clyde the have him as William (Cidy). I am not doing this to put it on the internet, it is for my family and to let our children of tomorrow know who their ancestors were. I try to be correct in all that I try to do. He was baptised 12 Jul 1857 at Trinity Lutheran, Marcy/Ashville, Ohio, in Pickaway County. He was the s/o Charles and Catharine Barbara (HAY) HENSEL. I have this information because they resided at least at one time in Bloom township, in which I have had a website for a number of years now. I don't have a wife down for William. If this is your William, and his last visible census was 1880 when he was in Bloom township, and he was buried there as well, then whatever child he had would most likely have been born there. However... something is wrong here. If 'my' William is the same as 'your' William, he is shown as single and living with his parents in 1880 as a 23 year old laborer. You said he had a son about 1876 named Arthur. Did he have it out of wedlock? Did they get divorced? Something seems a bit fishy about all this. If you're intent about finding more info about Arthur, I think I'd start at the beginning and definitely not take anything you see on the internet as gospel. Just yesterday I found someone who had submitted info to the LDS that is just packed full of errors, especially with death locations and birth locations. I'd also look at that other Arthur I mentioned. See if you can find a birth record on Arthur. I think the Arthur who I found in the 1880 census in Liberty twp. had a brother Gabe, and Gabe named one of his own sons Arthur, (sometimes shown as Basil Arthur). Lots of Arthurs! My website is at http://www.foorgenealogy.com/gene.html if you want to see what I have on those Hensel's. I didn't have the 1870 census stuff in the ' notes' section yet, but here it is: CENSUS: 1870 Bloom Twp., Fairfield Co., OH, p 28 HENSEL, Charles, 43y farmer b Baden ", Catherine, 38y keeping house b PA ", William G., works on farm, 13y b OH ", Mary A., dau 12y attending school b OH ", Martin L., 9y attending school b OH ", Edwin C., 6y attending school b OH ", Charley M., 1y at home b OH ", Jacob, 80y infirm b Baden The other census extractions are listed below each individual in the searchable database.

I haven't been able to find a lot about any of them except the other day, I received an e mail with a lot about the Noice line. The Hensel line seems to be out! of reach for some reason. I have notes from the family, but none that show the children of Samuel and Sarah Ann except dates of birth and death. Thanks again for your reply. This is the Obit of Sarah Ann . The death of Mrs. Sarah McLaughlin occurred Thursday at her home near the Grange Hall in Pleasant Township (Fairfield Co. OH), from pneumonia. She was 80 years of age. The deceased was the widow of Samuel McLaughlin. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. William Hensel of East Wheeling St., and Mrs. George Noice of Locust St., one son Cassius McLaughlin of Pleasant Township, and one brother, Solomon Emphfield of Basil. The funeral will be held at the Maple St. Chapel, Sunday afternoon. Conducted by Rev. Biddle of Bremen and the remains will be interred at Forest Rose Cemetery. Rick McLaughlin

The 1880 census, though, shows this Arthur with different parents, but same age as the one you're seeking -- and he has several siblings. I have some HENSEL's in that county, but earlier than 1876. Some were in the Pickaway Co., Ohio area as well. What leads you to Fairfield county with your Arthur Hensel? I see several in the 1880 census who are all about the same age. How do you know for sure who his parents are? Were you able to find him in any census records? I'm curious as to where you found him in 1880 as the only one I found who was born in Ohio was the one in Liberty and the parents there are shown as Jacob and Jane.

This indicates that Maragret had died by the time the will was written in 1825. It seems that EARL was her married name, but it could have been a middle name. In either case, it does not explain why her heirs had the last names of BURMAN and RADER. It's unlikely that Mr. Earl was their father. Also note that the was a marriage for Margaret SMETHERS to Henry GUMBER in Dec. 1820 in Fairfield Co., Ohio, according to the book Early Fairfield County Marriages: 1801-1826. I haven't found any other Margaret SMETHERS/SMOTHERS/etc. that fit this time frame. If Margaret's husband at the time of her death was Mr. EARL, it seems she was married briefly, prior to her marriage to EARL. Since none of her heirs bore the EARL of GUMBER names is seems that her heirs may have been her step children. She would not have had any children who were of age. She was married to Henry GUMBER in Dec 1820 in Fairfield Co., Ohio. The "Ye Ancient Swains" lists Peggy SMETTERS as the wife of Henry GUMBER. We are assuming that Peggy is short for Margaret. C. McElroy, Wednesday morning June 5th, 1872, Mrs. ANN McELROY, relict of the late Rev. Archibald McElroy of the Pittsburg Conference, Methodist Episcopal Church, in the 84th year of her age. At the time of her death, Mrs. McElroy was one of the very few remaining links connecting the past with the present. One by one they are disappearing, and soon they will be extinct. Born in the state of Maryland in 1789, she carried over eleven years of the last century in her age. She was the daughter of James S. Collins, who with his family, removed to then North-west Territory in 1802, and settled on land previously entered, at what is now known as Bern Station Muskingum Valley Railway, near Lancaster, Ohio. She experienced in her early life all the hardships, perils, and privations, inseperably incident to early pioneers. At the time her father passed the Muskingum on his way to his new home there were but three log cabins where the city of Zanesville now stands, and, as Father Collins wagon was the first that passed west of the river at this point, he had to widen the bridle path with his axe to get to his destination. She was married to the Rev. Archibald McElroy in 1814. The life of a Methodist minister's wife was then a very different thing from what it is now. They lived in log cabins or hewed log houses; had to cultivate all the garden vegetables required by their families, had to make much of the cloth required for clothing and house use, from the wool or flax direct. In 1826 she was left a widow, with four children; Two others had already died, and two have died since, while two have survived her. She was a widow for about 46 years. The greater part of her life was passed in Central and Eastern Ohio, the last twenty two years in the city of Zanesville. About ten years since her vision became impaired, and for the last five years she was unable to read, and could only see just enough to go about. Mrs. McElroy was genial and pleasant in her disposition and was therefore much beloved by her circle of friends. She joined the Methodist Episcopal Church in the year 1800 - when the denomination was in its infancy - held her membership and lived religion all the way to the end. Mrs. McElroy never shrank from any duty imposed on her by her family, church or society, but did what she could with all her heart and might during her whole protracted life. Always prudent, economical, and industrious, hers was an eminently good and useful life and example. Her faith in her Redeemer never wavered during the three score and ten and odd years she was in his service. She loved her church with passionate fondness, as the means of God for the salvation of the world. She loved her Bible and read it every day until vision failed her, and the task of reading it to her devolved on others. She often talked of death. Had laid aside the clothing she desired put on her at her burial. Her son oft! en tried to get her consent to have her body taken and placed beside his father at Western Penn, but she never gave it. So she was tenderly laid in her last resting place in Woodlawn cemetery June 9th, 1872. The Zanesville Signal, published: Zanesville, Ohio Friday, June 28, 1872
