The Lithopolis Lodge must have been an order of Freemasons. Masonic lodges in earlier times held their monthly meetings as close as possible to the full moon, out of necessity. The meetings were held outdoors and at night, either on a hill or in a clearing in the woods. The natural illumination of the full moon helped make it easier for the lodge members to see during the proceedings. Some Masonic groups today still hold their meetings as close as possible to a full moon, out of a sense of tradition.
What was or is the LITHOPOLIS LODGE? I have an article from the HISTORY OF FAIRFIELD COUNTY, OHIO , by Harvey Scott (1795-1876) (reprinted by the Fairfield County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society) 1983 The Lithopolis Lodge is listed as one of the lodges within the county and beyond Lancaster. The book states that the lodge was instituted January 21st, 1848. Charter-members were: JOSHUA GLANVILLE, WILLIAM TEEGARDIN, DANIEL TEEGARDEN, PETER TEEGARDIN, JOHN B. MOORE, ZEBULON PERRIL, JACOB TEEGARDEN, DANIEL MILLER, JOSEPH MILLER, JOHN SMITH, W.W. HITE, WILLIAM RILEY, JACOB SHROCK AND WILLIAM JACOBS. Number of members in March 1877 was 75. The regular meetings of this Lodge are held on Friday evenings preceding each full moon, but if the moon fulls on Friday evening, then the meeting takes place on that evening. WHAT did the full moon have to do with this lodge? Thanks in advance. Ruth Sprowls
Good evening, Margaret: There is a way to 'trick' the datelines on some of these obituaries. I just checked and was able to do it with Lancaster. IF you go into today's obits, then if you look up in the 'address' line, you will see something like "news/stories/20040624/obituaries' which gives you the year, month, day. When you first highlight that line, then, release it and put your curser arrow just to the right of the '06', do a backspace and change it to '04' which would give you April 24, 2004 in this case. I'm not sure exactly how far back you can do it, but I've gone back at least several months that way somnetimes when I'd learned that I missed someone's obit on the local papers. Otherwise, most of thenm will only allow you to 'backdate' about a week or so. I decided to just go ahead and post this on the OhFairfield list so others will also be able to use this. Good luck, Ronna (Eyman) Eagle ----- Original Message ----- From: "Marguerite Crist Calvin" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, June 24, 2004 6:08 PM Subject: [OHFAIRFI-L] Eagle Gazette obit archives > I could not see an archive list for obits in the Lancaster Eagle > Gazette. do they not archive them? My WAGONER or WAGNER family might be related to them, if not directly so. In answer to your question, Joan, I don't know if these WAGONERs are related to your Mary Elizabeth WAGONER and John PAVER of Greenfield Twp. I do directly descend from Neal and Catharine CLARK, who lived in Amanda Twp., Fairfield County. Catharine might have been born in MD, as was your Mary Elizabeth. The descendants of these CLARKs intermarried with WAGONERs and many families formerly of Fairfield County, who moved to Allen County, Ohio. Some of the families they married into include SWISHER, DONER, SHERRICK, STUKEY and STEMEN. Susan

Is anyone on the list connected to the CUSHMAN family that resided in the Royalton area (Amanda Twp)? There is also a connection between the CUSHMAN and NIGH/NYE families. Lucinda CUSHMAN married George NIGH in Wyandot Co., OH. Are the NIGHs in Fairfield connected to the NIGHs in Wyandot. Lucinda CUSHMAN was from Fairfield, but relocated to Wyandot with some friends. Could anyone do a census lookup for me in the 1900 census (index and image)? I'm looking for a George Parks (aka George M) whose wife may have been Della... In 1903 they signed an affidavit from Hocking County, so they may have been of that county or another nearby.... Thanks Sue
On the 1900 Census index at Genealogy.com, there are 7 George Parkses (no middle initial) and 1 George M. Parks. None of them was in Hocking County. None of them was in a county adjacent to Hocking County. I looked at the actual census images for each one, and none of them had a wife named Della. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/2VB.2ACE/444 Message Board Post: I have made arrangemnts with a DNA testing company to start a surname study of the Swisher family. This study will use only a 43 STR marker Y-chromosone test using a cheek swab. This test is a marked improvement over earlier tests. The test has a range of only 4 generations for the MRCA (Most Recent Common Ancestor). I can secure a price of only $199 for this test for the next week or so only. Previous test had liomitatin on 12 markers of between 14 generations to present for 12/15 marker tests and and 7 generations for 25/36, thse all generally have upper limtis before most our ancestors immigrated. With a 43 marker test there is little reason to have to upgrade the test later as the additional number of markers will raise the cost significantly but only imporve the MRCA time only one generation or so but this is a period that most experienced researchers are already knoweldgeable and DNA testing is not needed - except in rare cases of adoption, runaway or other research problems. I will donate between $10 and $25 to any line tested. This study is not a broad surname study. It is structured to investigate a long standing tradition that all West Virgina Swishers are related and investigate the traditions of their origins that have not been able to be proved by research over the last twenty years. Also, there are certain lines that seem to have overlapped in certain localities, such as descendants of Lawrence and Henry Swisher 1709 NY>PA>MD. I have used several different labs which process samples in different ways. I can address questions about confidentiality, disposition of samples and other questions, using a variety of ordering arrangements or different laboratories. I also have a fund established for researchers who cannot give a sample as a direct line male but would like to support the project and line of their choice. I would also encourgae others with an interest in a particular line to co-ordinate the study of that line. I am interested in getting testing on any Swisher Line that was in WV, Shenandoah Valley of VA in 1770-1810, So central PA 1740-1800, MD 1740-1840, NC 1790-1810, Southern OH 1820-1860, Central IN 1840-now, So East Central IL 1860-1900, MO 1830-1900, eastern and No Central KS 1880 - 1900, SE PA 1709-1790.
