    3. Kay, I can't remember if we have talked before, but I am very interested in the Hughes family of Fairfield Co. Do you have any information on Jesse Hughes (1787-1864) m. 1. Kauffman/Coffman and Stevenson connections?
    2. In a message dated 11/22/2004 2:49:00 PM Central Standard Time, [email protected] writes: My Fairfield County ancestors were named Tomlinson, Kauffmann / Coffman, and Beery My 3rd great grandfather was David Kauffman Stevenson who was born 1841 in Ohio. His wife, Calista McCleery was born in Fairfield Co., OH, and his father Mordecai Stevenson died in 1870s in Fairfield Co. OH. We have no idea why he was given the middle name of Kauffman. His mother was a Combs. Do any of you Kauffman/Coffman researchers know of any connection with the Stevenson family? Many thanks for your time. Ida

    3. Hello, Kay, I assume you were addressing this question to me (although my name is not Susan). I am not from Fairfield County. My Fairfield County ancestors were named Tomlinson, Kauffmann / Coffman, and Beery. Brandt is an extended family surname, whom a relative married. The Brandts were apparently neighbors of my ancestors. When I traveled to Fairfield County a few years ago, to do genealogy research, I discovered that the road in Bloom Township that runs in front of the Coffman Cemetery (where my ancestors are buried) is named Brandt Road. I was told by a local resident that Brandt Road used to connect Kauffmann Road and Pickerington Road, and that Brandt Road was on the pony express and stagecoach mail route. Today, Brandt Road dead-ends just a short distance west of the Coffman Cemetery. I imagine your Brandt ancestors owned land along this road, and that is how the street originally got its name. If you want to find Brandt Road on a street or highway map (like MapQuest), it is southwest of Carroll, OH, and northeast of Greencastle, OH. Freeland is my married name. I do not know of any connection that my husband's family ever had to Fairfield County. Sorry. 2. Sharon Butsch Freeland
    3. Thank you, John Hope, for your details on Leah Tomlinson Wiseley and Leah Wiseley Smith. Much of my information agrees with yours. Below are a few details on which my information differs slightly from your. Edward Bond Wiseley Born 20 September 1782 Leah Tomlinson Wiseley Born 28 June 1790 Leah P. Wiseley Smith Place of Birth Bloom Township, Fairfield County, Ohio I have traveled to Fairfield County, Ohio (from Colorado, where I reside) to visit the land which Henry Tomlinson purchased from the U.S. government. I have photographs of ALL of the headstones in the Coffman Cemetery some of which are no longer readable, but I took the shots anyway). The so-called Coffman Cemetery is actually on the land that Henry Tomlinson owned in Bloom Township. Henry's son, Jesse Tomlinson, married Margaret Coffman. After Henry's and Jesse's deaths, the Coffmans acquired Henry's land; thus did the cemetery become known as Coffman Cemetery. Among the headstones I photographed in the Coffman Cemetery are those of Edward Bond Wiseley and Leah Tomlinson Wiseley. If you'd like copies, I can e-mail scans of them to you, off-List. I would be interested in knowing from which of Solomon and Leah's children you descend. I have not researched the Smith line very well, because of the surname's being such a common one. With your help, I might learn more about my cousins in your branch. I have posted my family tree database at RootsWeb WorldConnect, if you would like to view it and offer your corrections, additions, and / or comments. Here is a link to my family tree: http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=connections&id=I05939 Thanks again for your willingness to assist me in learning more about our mutual Tomlinson ancestors. I would love to talk to you about Leah Wiseley Smith. Leah's mother was Leah Tomlinson Wiseley (1790-1866). Leah Tomlinson was the sister of my great-great-great-grandfather, Jesse Tomlinson. Jesse Tomlinson died in 1841, intestate. Jesse and Leah's father, Henry Tomlinson, died in 1837, intestate. Since they died before civil records were kept, and since neither had a will, I have had a hard time finding information on them. Perhaps you have located details on Leah Tomlinson Wiseley that would aid me in scaling my Tomlinson brick wall. If you are Leah's descendant, then you and I are cousins of some degree. I don't know if there is a connection or not but they are buried in Versailles Cemetery. Jacob Chism b:Jan 22, 1782 d:Jun 5, 1857 Chism farm bur assm. There are also quite a few African American Chism in this area because these Chism's brought slaves with them to Missouri. I hope this is a connection for you. It pays to look in the states that migration from TN, KY, VA, NC were going to.
