Best place for quick maps of counties for any state that I found is quickfacts.census.gov Easiest way to do so is a search on google, type in the full name of the State (Ohio) then the words County Map. The one for Ohio is found at: quickfacts.census.gov/qfd/maps/ohio_map.html You will see Shelby is in Western Ohio, about midway down.... Right click on map and "save as" if you want to save a map to your computer... Thanks to all of you who wrote to answer my question. I went back through my file and saw that years ago I made copies of some old deeds which I found on film at LDS. While they aren't deeds of the ancestor in question, they were the deeds of other family members/neighbors and Chilicothe was mentioned. So that's likely where I can look. It was in The Handy Book for Genealogists that I saw Fairfield was formed from Washington and Ross. That's why I thought records might be in those respective county seats. That's why I wondered which county Berne Twp would be in. Something else, while we're on the topic of land records - my ancestor James S. Collins, Jr. bought a parcel of land from his father for $1. The amount I don't question - it was his age. I believe he was b in 1808 and the date of the deed is 1823. He was 15. Was this common? Lori
Lori, You want to look at the Chillicothe Land Records. The land which lies in present day Fairfield County was sold by the federal government to the original purchasers at Chillicothe, Ross County, Ohio. These records are now at the Ohio Historical Society in Columbus, Ohio and many have been microfilmed. In some cases, the land patents were later recorded in Fairfield County. Or, the patents were mentioned in later deeds when the land was sold. Also, in some cases, the original owner was just a land speculator. At one time, a portion of Berne Township was given to Hocking County. If you find your ancestor owning land in what is now Hocking County, don't panic. It is possible. Barb Rowles
Lori I believe it was Washington but the formation of Fairfield predates the State of Ohio by 3 years; so you're looking around the time of the Northwest territory and the original land grant records. Irrespective of which county Berne township came from originally, the records, if they still exist, SHOULD now be in Fairfield. The records for the land generally moved to the new county being formed. Maybe I can find something at the library or the Fairfield County branch of the Ohio Genealogical Society next time I'm down there. What name are you looking for and what piece of property? Hank Cradduck Fairfield County OGS volunteer -----Original Message----- From: Lori [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Friday, January 07, 2005 7:21 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [OHFAIRFI-L] Original Counties My ancestor lived in Berne Twp in Fairfield Co. I have the property records that show where he sold his land, but not where he actually bought the land in the first place. I was puzzled, but then I realized the Fairfield wasn't the original county, so the purchase may appear in Ross or Washington County. My question is which one? Which county was Berne Twp in before Fairfield Co. was formed. Lori
My ancestor petitioned for land in Fairfield County in 1799. He received a deed to his property in 1805. He was on the tax rolls beginning in 1806. His daughter's 1802 marriage was one of the first recorded events in county history. If Fairfield County was a part of some other county before that, I am not aware of it. As far as I know, Fairfield County was a part of the Northwest Territory prior to the land being opened up to petitioners in the late 1790s. The exact county lines may have changed somewhat over time, but I think Fairfield was an original county.
From the Fairfield County GenWeb site: Fairfield County, eighth county to be formed in the Northwest Territory, was created by the Governor and Council of the Northwest Territory, and was proclaimed by Governor Arthur St. Clair on December 9, 1800. Both county and seat of justice are older by three years than the State of Ohio. The land area of the new county included the present counties of Delaware, Knox, and Licking, with large portions of Franklin, Perry, Pickaway, and Hocking.
My ancestor lived in Berne Twp in Fairfield Co. I have the property records that show where he sold his land, but not where he actually bought the land in the first place. I was puzzled, but then I realized the Fairfield wasn't the original county, so the purchase may appear in Ross or Washington County. My question is which one? Which county was Berne Twp in before Fairfield Co. was formed. Lori
