If you are taking one line or one page from a book or a CD it does not violate a copyright any more than a library does which has the same book available for all to use for research. I have been in libraries where I wanted to copy several pages of a book and was not allowed to because it violated the copyright laws but was allowed to copy a page or two. A Look-up is only giving a small look into those records and at the same time might end up helping the company or researcher to sell the book to the person requesting the look up. I feel that Look-ups are valuable and helpful to all. In this same regard, I feel that it is MANDITORY for the Look-up to give the information requested plus THE NAME OF THE BOOK, ITS AUTHOR, THE PUBLISHER'S NAME (BOOK OR CD) , DATE OF PUBLICATION AND THE PAGE OR LOCATION WHERE THE INFORMATION WAS FOUND. In addition, if the person has requested a considerable amount of information, the Look-up should also give information where the book can be purchased, if it is known, and suggest the he/she purchase the book since it would be advantageous to the requester. (I especially direct this to all who are doing look-ups) Look-ups are a vital part of genealogy on the internet but also must be taken for what it is - a tertiary record - fraught with potential errors. (It is a copy of a copy of a copy etc.) It is only a guide or a path and it is the responsibility for the requester to verify this data with a primary source or an overwhelming preponderance of supporting data which indicates that this information is indeed true. One other thought in connection with the Broderbund CDs and the extensively used IGI and Ancestral Files of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints ( commonly called the Mormon Church) ; New information is received from mostly from people who are not professional genealogists, the information is then added to a large data base and it is not double checked for accuracy !!! I have found multiple dates and locations for the same event in the same person's life. These and look up data must be regarded as a path to finding the PRIMARY DATA RECORD. This idea must must be adhered to if the research is to maintain an accurate data base of his/hers ancestors. Paul E. Cavalier lecavalier1@juno.com ------------------------------------ Paul, AMEN! I really think that the stuff is only copyrighted in it's CD format so if someone types it in it is not really an infringement. And as with all genealogy especially before 1900 it is more of what people choose to pass on.
