I pay a small donation to pay for this email list and another for Warren county. This is provided to this group by Rootsweb. I would like to encourage everyone on this list who uses Rootsweb services to consider becoming a member of Rootsweb. At present Rootsweb is in a financial bind, Palladium who had been a major sponsor has not paid its annual donation despite its promise because it and Broderbund have been taken over by a larger corporation. They have stated their intent to do this but because Rootsweb and its data bases are free, may be in some competition with Broderbund. So while Palladium plans to continue its support this year, it is not clear when this will happen. "The RootsWeb Genealogical Data Cooperative (http://www.rootsweb.com/) is the modern-day equivalent of an extremely well run and efficient Genealogical and Historical Society -- one with an enormous Public Library (second in size to only the LDS library in Salt Lake City) a Free Newsletter (weekly instead of quarterly) and numerous other services such as Free Mailing Lists and Free GenConnect Boards -- all far beyond the means of any local genealogy society. The RootsWeb Genealogical Data Cooperative is supported by its users, and RootsWeb would cease to exist if not for the support of on-line genealogists like ourselves. Most genealogical researchers are members of one or more local genealogical societies, all of which charge a minimum of $10 annually, and usually more. RootsWeb, however, is not local, but Universal, a World Wide GenWeb Society for all On-Line Researchers. Unfortunately, however, while it is estimated that over a quarter of a million on-line genealogists regularly utilize RootsWeb's Free Services, less than 5% are Members, Sponsors or Donors of RootsWeb, and it is this sad fact which causes RootsWeb to be engaged in a constant struggle to stay afloat.
