------------------------------------------------------------------ FORWARDED MESSAGE - Orig: 23-Nov-98 4:57 Subject: [Fwd: IGI details] From: Don Furnish donlfurnish@copper.net ------------------------------------------------------------------ The IGI, as you say is an Index and a very good guide line, and always pays to verify the entry. On the IGI record and if you are using the CD-ROM the entry will also show (a)...a Batch Film number, be it an extraction from a parish film which has a letter in front c (christening extract) m(marriage extract), p (extract from a parish film). Sometimes there will be a 7 digit number which is an LDS temple film, some can be ordered through the LDS Family History centre such as Baptism of the Dead/Endowment of the Dead. Some 7 digit numbers are Temple films and not available on film at a FHC, sometimes the 7 digit numbers are followed by 2 or 3 numbers and mostly these are patron sheet submissions. It always pays to check these film numbers in the Computer which will verify what temple film it is. (b) scource call number...that is the film number which is always alngside the Batch Film number. Checking your IGI entries on the CD-ROM, will enable you to further your research by ordering the appropriate film if available. I am sure the Librarian at the FHC will help If by chance the IGI has been viewed on the microfiche, only Batch film numbers are shown and 7 digit numbers. On the IGI it always states where the event took place..so once again at the FHC, look in the Loclaity catalogue in the country/County/parish (that is shown on the IGI) and see what records are available for that parish, it also pays to look at the County records and see what is available. Some Family History Centres have the Imperial Gazetteer on microfiche and look up the town/parish/hamlet on this gazetteer, you would be amazed at what information there is! Also look up the town/parish in the Phillimores Parish Atlas, so you know its situation in the County. Trusting this helps! Good wishes...Prinia, Motueka, New Zealand !^NavFont02F06BA0007RGHHMBCBA07
