The name was for its time obviour because it was Downstream on the Sandusky River from Upper Sandusky. Several Years ago I traveled, I think, Route 20 towards Toledo. Along the side of the road a few of the original milestones were still in place. On one side were the letters "LS" for Lower Sandusky and a number. On the other side was the letter "P" for Perrysburg and a number. the numbers, of course, were the miles to the respective cities. I don't know when the change was made.
