I am wondering if anyone on this list may have some insightful information or references for me. My husband's 5x-great-grandfather was Jeremiah Daniels, who carried the mail between Huron and Cleveland. (I've included the reference from "A Standard History of Erie County, Ohio".) I am interested in finding more reference materials which may describe: A. Early 1800s life in Ohio B. The occupation of "mail carrier" in the early 1800s. Does anyone have any reading suggestions? Thanks - Carla Leber Peeke, Hewson L. "A Standard History of Erie County, Ohio," Vol. 1, 1916, Chicago: Lewis Publishing Company, p. 102: "Jeremiah Daniels came here in 1809 also, and married a daughter of Mr. Downing in 1813, settling on a farm near the old Downing home, afterward owned by W. J. Hinde. Mr. Daniels carried the mail between Huron and Cleveland for several years. Barring accidents, the round trip was made in a week, and was considerable of a journey, when the condition of the roads and the dangers of the forest are taken into account. Savages at that time were making some trouble on the Western Reserve, and though Mr. Daniels never met with any serious injury, it is said that he passed through several exciting experiences."
