    1. [OHERIE] Milton Atherton: Ancestors and descendants
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Atherton Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/1VB.2ACE/590.1.1.1 Message Board Post: Hello Jean, I had contacted you some time ago regarding a message board posting for Atherton genealogy. Your information, together with other poking around has given my a much clearer picture of my own Atherton ancestry. You had been interested in Milton Atherton, who I believe to be my third great grandfather. In one of your message board postings, you said that after Milton married, first, Delia (Van) Benschoten, he then married your ancestor, Elizabeth Holden. You indicated that you had a marriage record for them which named Milton's parents. I am wondering if you would be willing to send me a copy of that marriage record. I have been unable to locate any marriage data. I would be willing to pay for copying and mailing. Please let me know if that is something you can do. I did find the record for Milton and Elizabeth in Barbour county on the 1860 census. I am assuming that they then moved to Tucker county, as I show a record for Milton (mis-transcribed "Mittin" on Ancestry) with Elizabeth and children Byron and Grant in 1870. The city name is shown on Ancestry as "Hannahnills" when it should be "Hannahsville." I also found a copy online of a book called History of Tucker County in which election results for various city offices are reported. It looks as though "M. C. Atherton" was elected as the Township Clerk as well as the Township Treasurer for Hannahsville, but was soundly defeated for the post of "Supervisor of Election." An 1880 census for Licking, Tucker, West Virginia shows M. C. Atherton, Elizabeth and children Byron G., Grant S., and Laura S. Atherton. I then found a 1900 listing, still in Licking, Tucker, West Virginia, for just Milton and Elizabeth. (Milton is mistranscribed "Millon" by Ancestry this time.) I think this goes contrary to something I saw in your records showing Milton as dying in Fetterman, WV before 1900. So, I am wondering if I have the right Milton after all. Please let me know how your research is coming. I have been working on Milton's descendants, leading to my own family. I was quite confused about Milton's child with Delia Van Benschoten, my gg grandfather "Fred" Atherton. His name at birth was Franklin, which record you found. I have since found several things that tie him to my g grandfather, Guy Atherton, as well as firmly to Milton. I have tried to put some of this on my website. I haven't gotten to Fred's record yet, but some of the data is online for Guy which explains some of it. Here is my page for Guy. (Milton's grandson.) http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~brohmer/althoff/atherton/guy1.html I found that Fred remarried and lived in South Dakota. The best source of data I found is from a published source of South Dakota biographies. Here is a link to that (hope it works!) http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/sd/day/bios/atherton155gbs.txt Well, that is pretty much where my research stands. Let me know if you have questions or can fill in more blanks for me! Ann Brohmer P. S. Is one of the children, Byron, or Grant your ancestor?
