There is a short article about him in "County and Family Histories: Ohio, 1780-1970," which I can send to you as a Word document if you are interested. You might also check for information at the Follett House Museum, 404 Wayne Street, Sandusky, OH 44870, (419) 627-9608. There is a Probate Court record for him, vol. 3, pg. 72, and Common Pleas Court records: vol. 5, pgs 339 and 374(2); vol. 7, pg. 329; vol. 9, pgs 79,186, 490, 515; and vol. 10, pg. 46. I believe you can get copies either from the Court House in Sandusky or from Bowling Green State University, and perhaps someone on the list can tell you which is the better source. Hope this helps. Hi Anna, Here is a reference to Valentine Fries form Charles Frohman's book Milan & the Milan Canal: "Valentine Fries was born in Germany, January 9, 1826, and came to Milan in 1848, establishing a grocery which he operated for twenty years, but he also became interested in other ventures, including shipbuilding. Even after the canal was abandoned, he continued building several ships at Fries Landing, which was named for him. His later ventures were the lumber business in Huron, and mercantile and banking interests in Cleveland and Huron. He died April 2. 1900." Ships listed in the same book as having been built by him are: Hyphen- Apr. 25, 1861 Wm. Raynor- May 5, 1862 Wm. Shupe- July 30, 1862 Atmosphere- Sep. 27, 1863 Amaranth- Apr. 17, 1864 Mystic- 1866 Exile- 1867 Also, in the Milan and Milan Twp. bicentennial booklet (1976), prints of the Hyphen & Amaranth are reproduced (though black & white only.) You might try the Milan Historical Museum for more information. They have a nice website, through which you can contact them.
