Sorry and I hope YOU still have the same e-address. Our Nelson BARNES (16y b. OH) is shown in 1850 census for Margaretta Twp., Erie, OH, living with his parents, Ira (57y b. NY) and Eunice (57y b. NY) BARNES, also bros. Burton (20y b. OH) Ira (18y b. OH) Living with the family are two girls Margaret HAZLETT (17y b. PA) and Mary SHORT (11y b. NY). Since my posting in 1998 I have found and received a lot of info on the BARNES family of Erie. Would be happy to share. I'm wondering if the Mary SHORT who was living with Ira's family in 1850, could have been the Mary/Maria/Mary Elizabeth, that Nelson eventually married? Nelson's wife's name is shown as Mary in the 1860 and 1870 census and she says she was b. VT. Also in the 1850 census for Margaretta, Erie, OH, 3 families up from Ira BARNES, is a Charles SHORT 14y b. NY, living with the Peter T. DUNHAM family. I would be interested to know if anyone can identify this SHORT family and say what happened to Mary and Charles SHORT.

His parents were Peter and Mercy Darling. Their son, Stephen, was my great-grandfather. The youngest child was Franklin, and the last record I have of him is the same census info you have. The other Franklin was the first child of James Darling and Jane McKane. He died very young and is buried near Crete, IL. I am still looking for descendents of James/Jane Darling. He has an interesting story in the Linn Co. history we found in a library there. I also have his Civil War record that I'd like to send to a descendent. I do not have anything really helpful about Peter and Mercy's origins. According to the eldest son, Simeon's Civ. War record he was born in Onondaga Co. NY. We plan to go there next year and see if there is more information than what is in the census and online. If you have more information on Peter, I would really love to have it.

I want to check it out myself this weekend if the rain holds off. I have asked some of my fellow researchers if they know anything about it. It was not covered in "Erie County, Ohio, Cemetery Census Before 1909" which we published in 1989. We would want to include it in our update of this volumn.
Janis, Margaret Mattis was born in Switzerland in 1843. She married Joseph Lightener and had 4 children Louisa, Mary, Chas and Rosa. Joseph Lightener committed suicide in Nov of 1873. She married Joseph Weiler in Port Clinton, Ottowa County, Ohio on 19-Oct-1874. They had four children Anna, Maggie, Louis, and John. According to the 1880 census they all ( except John who was born after the census) live in Huron Township, Huron County, Ohio as Joseph and Margaret Wheeler. Louisa Lightener is a Domestic servant for John Whickam. On 30-May 1890 mixes rat poison and whiskey and commits suicide. His obituary says Joe Wheeler lives near Sages Grove and is buried in East Side Cemetery which later becomes McMillan's. On 19-Dec-1913 Margaret Wheeler died in Huron Township, Erie County, Ohio of "Aortic Insufficiency". John Wheeler signed her death certificate. ( Wheeler Road next to the Golf course in Huron is supposed to be part of their property.) She is buried in "Scoots" (Scott's) Cemetery. They are known as Weiler, Willer and Wheeler in all of the different documents I've found. I visited Huron three years ago and went to Wheeler Road, Mcmillan's and Scott's cemeteries. I'd like to know where their property was. I have an old map from your library with names of the properties in the area during the time they lived their. It doesn't have Sage's Grove, nor does it have John Whickam's property. I'd also like to know if any of the Wheelers, Weilers or Willers still live in Huron. Irealize I ask for a lot, but any help you can give will be greatly appreciated. I have an extensive history and family tree. If you would like to see it or put it in the archives I would be happy to send it to you.
