RISDON, a venerable citizen of Conneaut, Ohio, was born in Genesee county, New York, November 20, 1820, son of Almore and Cynthia Risdon, both natives of that county. Almore Risdon was a man of prominence in his day. He filled the office of County Sheriff in Genesee county. In 1838 he came "West and settled in Vermillion, Erie county, Ohio, where he opened up a farm and was engaged in agricultural pursuits the rest of his life. He was accidentally drowned in the Huron river in 1835, aged forty-four years. His first wife, the mother of our subject, died in 1822, at the age of twenty-five, leaving three children: George, and E. and Eliza, twins. George, a prominent farmer of Erie county, Ohio, died January 26, 1893, aged seventy- five years, leaving a widow, Charity (Goldsmith) Risdon, and four sons and five daughters. By his second wife, Elcina (Lewis) Risdon, the father of our subject had two sons and four daughters, all deceased except one son. The mother of these children died some time in the '50s. In early life Mr. Risdon sailed the lake and superintended a dredging- machine in the employ of the United States for four years, and for Her Majesty's Government in Canada for a little more than twelve years, performing page 811 faithful and efficient service. He took out every coffer-dam from Ogdensburg to Montreal. After leaving government employ, he located at Conneaut, and engaged in ship-carpentering. This was in 1858. He worked at that business for a period of thirty years, at the same time being interested in farming operations. Mr. Risdon's first visit to Conneaut was in 1835, and since 1837 he has called this place his home. For fifty years he has voted the Democratic ticket here. For the past five years he has conducted the sprinkling business of the town. He was Street Commissioner twelve years, and was Marshal about six years. Mr. Risdon was married in 1844, to Miss Lucretia M. Fredericks. Her father, John Fredericks, a Hollander by birth, was a soldier in Bonaparte's war. He went on board an English vessel, came to America, and at New York deserted. He lived to be ninety-three years of age, dying about 1867. His wife died twenty years before. They had a family of four sons and three daughters, six of whom are now living. Mr. and Mrs. Risdon have five daughters, namely: Harriet, wife of Glover Ashley, has three children, Frederick, Lulie and Freddie; Emma Jane, a member of the home circle; Mary, wife of John Cummins, of the Conneaut Canning Factory, has four children, Thomas R., Mabel, Margaret and Robert; Clara, wife of Burton Thayer, has four children, Lee, Alice, Hazel and Harry; and Helen, wife of Burt Capron, has one child, Bertha. Mr. and Mrs. Risdon are attendants of the Presbyterian Church. He has long been identified with the Masonic fraternity, being a member of the blue lodge, chapter, council and commandery; has been Tyler in the four bodies for twenty years, and during all this time has never missed more than half a dozen meetings. He has attended all the conclaves until the one at Denver last year, and has been in all the State conclaves. Mr. Risdon is also a member of the Knights of Honor, of which organization he is second officer and a Steward. Few men in Conneaut are better known or have more friends than Mr. Risdon.

    2. Jeanne, I have found that the dates don't always jive. In my family, the Wiler Family, they changed the spellings of both first and last name, the dates for their birthday from death certificates and Baptismal certificates and the WWI draft are all off by one year. I don't know if they didn't really know their birthdate or, in the case of the draft, if they just didn't lie to suit their own purposes. It does become difficult. 1. [OHERIE] Milton Atherton: Ancestors and descendants
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Atherton Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/1VB.2ACE/590.1.1.1 Message Board Post: Hello Jean, I had contacted you some time ago regarding a message board posting for Atherton genealogy. Your information, together with other poking around has given my a much clearer picture of my own Atherton ancestry. You had been interested in Milton Atherton, who I believe to be my third great grandfather. In one of your message board postings, you said that after Milton married, first, Delia (Van) Benschoten, he then married your ancestor, Elizabeth Holden. You indicated that you had a marriage record for them which named Milton's parents. I am wondering if you would be willing to send me a copy of that marriage record. I have been unable to locate any marriage data. I would be willing to pay for copying and mailing. Please let me know if that is something you can do. I did find the record for Milton and Elizabeth in Barbour county on the 1860 census. I am assuming that they then moved to Tucker county, as I show a record for Milton (mis-transcribed "Mittin" on Ancestry) with Elizabeth and children Byron and Grant in 1870. The city name is shown on Ancestry as "Hannahnills" when it should be "Hannahsville." I also found a copy online of a book called History of Tucker County in which election results for various city offices are reported. It looks as though "M. C. Atherton" was elected as the Township Clerk as well as the Township Treasurer for Hannahsville, but was soundly defeated for the post of "Supervisor of Election." An 1880 census for Licking, Tucker, West Virginia shows M. C. Atherton, Elizabeth and children Byron G., Grant S., and Laura S. Atherton. I then found a 1900 listing, still in Licking, Tucker, West Virginia, for just Milton and Elizabeth. (Milton is mistranscribed "Millon" by Ancestry this time.) I think this goes contrary to something I saw in your records showing Milton as dying in Fetterman, WV before 1900. So, I am wondering if I have the right Milton after all. Please let me know how your research is coming. I have been working on Milton's descendants, leading to my own family. I was quite confused about Milton's child with Delia Van Benschoten, my gg grandfather "Fred" Atherton. His name at birth was Franklin, which record you found. I have since found several things that tie him to my g grandfather, Guy Atherton, as well as firmly to Milton. I have tried to put some of this on my website. I haven't gotten to Fred's record yet, but some of the data is online for Guy which explains some of it. Here is my page for Guy. (Milton's grandson.) http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~brohmer/althoff/atherton/guy1.html I found that Fred remarried and lived in South Dakota. The best source of data I found is from a published source of South Dakota biographies. Here is a link to that (hope it works!) http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/sd/day/bios/atherton155gbs.txt Well, that is pretty much where my research stands. Let me know if you have questions or can fill in more blanks for me! Ann Brohmer P. S. Is one of the children, Byron, or Grant your ancestor? Also, feel free to contact me directly at brohmgen@yahoo.com
