    1. [OHERIE] Bette/Beatty and Sayler/Saylor descendants
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: cagurl74 Surnames: Bette, Beatty, Sayler, Saylor Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.ohio.counties.erie/12882/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I am seeking information on the descendants of Johannes (John) and Anna Maria (Mary) Sayler/Saylor as well as the family of Ludwig (Lewis) and Anna Maria (Mary) Bette/Beatty. Mary Saylor and Lewis Beatty were sister and brother. The Beatty family came to the US from South Russia in the late 1840s/early 1850 and the Saylors finally settled in Erie County in the 1870s. I know that John and Mary Saylor are buried in Scott Cemetery in Erie County. I am unaware of where the Beattys are buried. Perhaps Scott Cemetery as well? Michael Beatty, son of Lewis, died in the Civil War. I am interested in finding where he is buried. I am also curious as to the spouses of their daughters, Christina (b. Ohio c 1851) and Mary (b. Ohio c 1859). Any assistance is greatly appreciated! Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 1. [OHERIE] Alfred Willoughby and family in Erie c. 1832-1849
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Willoughby Trumbull Trumble Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.ohio.counties.erie/12881/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Dear Friends: If I have addressed my query to the wrong place, please recommend a researcher. I would expect to compensate your organization or consider a financial arrangement with a professional researcher. The 1840 federal census recorded the family of Alfred Willoughby in Huron twp., Erie, OH. I have two searches: 1. I am searching for source documents to verify the names of the members of this family and their relationships; e.g., church records such as church membership, tax records, school lists, etc. 2. Obtain a marriage record of *Sarah Emma Willoughby who was married in Erie County circa 1846-47. I am speculating that her husbands name was Abram Trumble (Trumbull). Hopefully, Sarah Emma's maiden name and the name of her parents will be on the marriage record. By the 1850 federal census Alfred Willoughby's family was in Licking County, Ohio. Sarah Emma (Willoughby) Trumble? remained in Erie county. Scattered pieces of information I've accumulated suggest that this family had the following individuals: Alfred Willoughby ........... Father (bn. NY, 1792-3) Nancy (Parsons) ............... Wife .... (bn. 1799) Edwin Clifford Holland W. Son ..... (bn. NY 1822) *Sarah Emma W. ................ Dtr ...... (bn. Hartford, CT 1824) Alfred Parsons W. ............ Son ..... (bn. Hartford, 1826) Sarah (Brown) Parsons .... Mother-in-Law The 1840 census shows the above six people in their appropriate age categories. The father, Alfred was a son and grandson of Baptist ministers; his son, Edwin, became a Baptist minister so I feel certain that their religious affiliation while in Huron was Baptist. I look forward to your reply. Jay Willoughby 5709 S. Broadway (Apt.C) St. Louis, MO. 63111 jaywiloby@ameripost.com

    1. Re: [OHERIE] OHERIE Digest, Vol 2, Issue 20
    2. Found some information that might help on John Murphy. Found the following. 1880 Census- Venice, Erie Co., OH Eleanor Dart F 80 Ireland Susan Murphy F 56 Canada Had the children listed as well. 1890 Veterans schedule- Jerusalem, Lucas Co., OH Susan J Murphy survivor John Murphy OH 65th Co. G deceased 1900 Census Jerusalem, Lucas Co., OH Susan Murphy 76 Jan 1824 Canada 1910 Jerusalem, Lucas Co., OH Susan Murphy 86 Canada Found this information as well The Story of the Sherman Brigade by Wilbur F. Hinman c.1897 Pg. 1048 Murphy, John, 45, Oct. 21, 1861, 3 yrs, wounded Dec. 31, 1862 in battle of Stone River, TN, Dec. 15, 1864, in battle of Nashville, TN, discharged Nov. 25, 1865, at Columbus, OH, veteran Most of the regiment was discharged in Texas in 1865. I believe this indicates that he was in a Union hospital located in Columbus, OH. Checked the national archives records and they have his war service file listed. Checked the pension files for him and did not see any listed. Would still be worth checking though by filling out the form and sending it in though. Checked for a widows pension as well, but none listed. This will give you a death date if they have a pension on file. Hope this helps in some small way. I have a direct grandfather that served in the 64th OH OVI that was the sister regiment to the 65th. Both proud members of the Sherman Brigade. They were named after John Sherman a prominent member of the US Senate at the time and the brother of Union General William Tecumseh Sherman. I will be traveling through Castalia later in the week and will try to look through the cemetery while I am there. Got to remember to wear those snow boots. Derek S. Davey, APG

They are parents of William,James,Henry,Charles,Mary, Ellen, Frederick, George, Bruce and Joseph. John was in the 65th Ohio infantry company G in Ohio. He is listed as being buried in Castalia Cemetery on a website that I found here on Rootsweb. However, I cannot find a death date for him. He was discharged from the Army Nov. 25, 1865, and is not listed in the 1880 census with his wife. If anyone has any information on this family, especially his son George, I would greatly appreciate it. Also if anyone might do a lookup at the Castalia Cemetery I would appreciate that! Am doing this research from Detroit and I don't have enought information for a field trip yet!! Thank you in advance.

    1. [OHERIE] Joseph Kauer Photograph
    2. Richard Kurish
    3. I recently came into possession of a photograph of a soldier in a World War 1 uniform. The photo is on a 3inch by 5 inch postcard, and shows a soldier in uniform, sitting on a chair in front of a photographers studio backdrop. On the back of the card is written: Joseph Kauer 10th Co. Columbus Barracks Columbus, Ohio A brief search of the name leads me to believe that the photo is that of Joseph Kauer, who lived in Sandusky, and enlisted on April 13, 1918, age 41 years. He was honorably discharged on December 13, 1918. If any of his descendents living in the area are interested in having the postcard, I will be happy to mail it to you, if you will send me your mailing address. Richard ricklaura@eriecoast.com

    1. [OHERIE] Early Ohio Mail Carriers
    2. Carla Leber
    3. I am wondering if anyone on this list may have some insightful information or references for me. My husband's 5x-great-grandfather was Jeremiah Daniels, who carried the mail between Huron and Cleveland. (I've included the reference from "A Standard History of Erie County, Ohio".) I am interested in finding more reference materials which may describe: A. Early 1800s life in Ohio B. The occupation of "mail carrier" in the early 1800s. Does anyone have any reading suggestions? Thanks - Carla Leber Peeke, Hewson L. "A Standard History of Erie County, Ohio," Vol. 1, 1916, Chicago: Lewis Publishing Company, p. 102: "Jeremiah Daniels came here in 1809 also, and married a daughter of Mr. Downing in 1813, settling on a farm near the old Downing home, afterward owned by W. J. Hinde. Mr. Daniels carried the mail between Huron and Cleveland for several years. Barring accidents, the round trip was made in a week, and was considerable of a journey, when the condition of the roads and the dangers of the forest are taken into account. Savages at that time were making some trouble on the Western Reserve, and though Mr. Daniels never met with any serious injury, it is said that he passed through several exciting experiences."
