    1. Tips on Oral History of Your Family
    2. Maggie Stewart-Zimmerman
    3. When you record an oral history, remember that you're an interested relative, not a hard-nosed reporter. Recording an oral history should be an enjoyable experience for everyone involved, and you're more likely to get good results if that's the case. Below are a few tips: 1.Schedule the oral history session in advance. Don't just show up on a person's doorstep unexpectedly. 2.Bring a tape recorder, or pen and paper, or both. If you want to use a tape recorder, make sure you get prior permission from the person you're interviewing. You may want to take a few notes even if you use a tape recorder, perhaps to get the correct spellings of places and people's names. If you use a tape recorder, be sure to test the recorder as well as the tape to make sure that each is working. 3.Make sure you record the date and location of the interview, as well as the name of the interviewer and the interviewee. 4.Ask questions to start things off, but don't be afraid to let the person you're interviewing talk "off the subject." You may get some of the best stories this way. If they really start rambling, gently steer them back to your questions. 5.Don't push for answers. If you're asking questions that seem to make the person uncomfortable, ask if they want to continue or if they would rather talk about something else. 6.If you ask "when" something happened, the answer will often be "I don't know, " because the individual doesn't recall the exact date or year. Instead of asking "when," ask the question in relation to another event. For example, did an event take place before or after the individual got married, or before or after the individual's parents died? You can also begin the question with "About how old were you when...." Using these techniques, you're more likely to get answers. 7.If you have any old pictures or other items that you have questions about, bring them along. You may get answers to your questions, and you will probably hear some good stories, too. 8.Keep the session relatively short, no more than one or two hours. Recording an oral history should be fun, not hard work. You can schedule another session at a later date if you want to continue recording the oral history. 1. Handwriting in Genealogy
    2. Maggie Stewart-Zimmerman
    3. "If only the typewriter had been invented a few centuries earlier!" That's often the cry of people trying to read older records. Old fashioned handwriting often gives older documents charm, but it also can be difficult to decipher. Below are a few clues that may help you out. First, read slowly and with care. Make sure that the words make sense, and don't assume anything. Watch out for double S's. The first S in a pair was often written to look like a lower case F. The following capital letters often look the same: I and J, L and S, L and T, M and N, T and F, and U and V. Don't forget the possibility of abbreviations. Names were abbreviated quite often, as well as common words. For example, you may find "sd" for "said," "decd" for "deceased," "do" for "ditto," "chh" for "church," and "rect" for "receipt." Double letters were often written as single letters with a line or tilde above them. Name abbreviations usually consist of the first three or four letters plus the last letter. Both name and word abbreviations are normally written with the last letter of the abbreviation raised. If you're having trouble deciphering a word, try saying it out loud in several different ways. If you can, read the remainder of the sentence and try to figure out what word would make sense. Find other words in the document that you can read, and use the letters in those words to piece together the letters in the words that you can't read. Use a handwriting book to help piece the letters together. Two books that you can use are The Handwriting of American Records for a Period of 300 Years, by E. Kay Kirkham and Understanding Colonial Handwriting, by Harriet Strykker-Rodda. If all else fails, you may need to consult a handwriting expert. 1. Word Meanings in Genealogy
    2. Maggie Stewart-Zimmerman
    3. Some of today's most familiar words had different meanings during colonial times. The change in meaning usually occurred in words referring to social relationships. For example, the word "cousin" often meant niece or nephew; and the title "Mrs." could show high social status, not marital status. There are a few other relationship terms that you should look out for: The terms "niece" and "nephew" spring from Latin words which meant "granddaughter" and "grandson," so you may find them used in that context. When we use the words "junior" and "senior," we normally think of a father and son relationship. However, in the past, these words were used much more liberally and could refer to an uncle and nephew, or even to two people with the same name who were unrelated. The words "brother" and "sister" also were used in different ways. Members of the same church often referred to each other as brothers and sisters, and a married couple would refer to their brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law just as brothers and sisters. The term "in-law" can also cause problems. In the past, "in-law" relationships could be either step relationships or the regular in-law relationship that we think of today. Misunderstanding and misinterpreting these terms can really twist the branches of your family tree, so when you're reading older records it is important to be cautious. When it is possible, verify information with other records. This is the best way to make sure that you have the correct information. In addition, look at the rest of the language in the document. The more arcane terms and spellings you find, the more careful you should be. 3. Below is a list of household places where you may find genealogical information. You can probably think of a few other places to look, too. Ask your relatives if they have or know of any items like these that might be useful to your research. When you're looking for information at home, you may find items that are dated, but don't have years. For example, Thursday, March 8. This is especially true with diaries, letters, and clippings found in scrapbooks. You can figure out what the year is by using a perpetual calendar. Autograph books Bibles Books (check for inscriptions in them) Certificates (from schools or jobs) Closet doors (look for writing on the inside) Clothing and hats Cookbooks Diaries and day books Family trees Furniture (sometimes you'll find names and dates on the bottoms or backs of furniture) Photo albums Important papers (wills, titles, and deeds) Jewelry (such as pins, ID bracelets, charm bracelets, lockets, or anything else that may have an inscription or indicate membership in an organization) Letters Newspaper clippings Pictures (don't forget to look at the backs) Resumes School papers (report cards can have parents' signatures) Scrapbooks Sewing samplers, quilts, and other handmade items Trunks and chests Yearbooks Michael Reck 2434 Forest Home Ave. Riverside, Ohio 45404-2410 E-Mail: moreck@juno.com "I owe my life to the Ancestors that I find" - Michael Reck !^NavFont02F04990007NGHHK9B651C *-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-* - Email From: Maggie Stewart-Zimmerman - Zimmerman Family Web Page: http://www.infinet.com/~dzimmerm/index.html - For Updates on all my Ohio Pages join the Maggie_Ohio Maillist send an email to Maggie_Ohio-L-request@rootsweb.com - Ohio County USGenWeb Pages: **Erie Co. at http://www.infinet.com/~dzimmerm/Erie/erie.htm **Franklin Co. at http://www.infinet.com/~dzimmerm/Franklin/franklin1.html **Knox Co. at http://www.infinet.com/~dzimmerm/Knox/primepg.htm **Medina Co. at http://www.rootsweb.com/~ohmedina/index.htm **Miami Co. at http://www.infinet.com/~dzimmerm/Miami/miami.htm *-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-* - God Put Me On Earth to Accomplish a Certain Number of Things. 1. A Valentine Story
    2. Maggie Stewart-Zimmerman
    3. THIS IS LONG BUT LOVELY!! I thought it was so sweet. John Blanchard stood up from the bench, straightened his Army uniform, and studied the crowd of people making their way through Grand Central Station. He looked for the girl whose heart he knew, but whose face he didn't, the girl with the rose. His interest in her had begun thirteen months before in a Florida library. Taking a book off the shelf he found himself intrigued, not with the words of the book, but with the notes penciled in the margin. The soft handwriting reflected a thoughtful soul and insightful mind. In the front of the book, he discovered the previous owner's name, Miss Hollis Maynell. With time and effort he located her address. She lived in New York City. He wrote her a letter introducing himself and inviting her to correspond. The next day he was shipped overseas for service in World War II. During the next year and one month the two grew to know each other through the mail. Each letter was a seed falling on a fertile heart. A romance was budding. Blanchard requested a photograph, but she refused. She felt that if he really cared, it wouldn't matter what she looked like. When the day finally came for him to return from Europe, they scheduled their first meeting - 7:00 PM at the Grand Central Station in New York. "You'll recognize me," she wrote, "by the red rose I'll be wearing on my lapel." So at 7:00 he was in the station looking for a girl whose heart he loved, but whose face he'd never seen. I'll let Mr. Blanchard tell you what happened: A young woman was coming toward me, her figure long and slim. Her blonde hair lay back in curls from her delicate ears; her eyes were blue as flowers. Her lips and chin had a gentle firmness, and in her pale green suit she was like springtime come alive. I started toward her, entirely forgetting to notice that she was not wearing a rose. As I moved, a small, provocative smile curved her lips. "Going my way, sailor?" she murmured. Almost uncontrollably I made one step closer to her, and then I saw Hollis Maynell. She was standing almost directly behind the girl. A woman well past 40, she had graying hair tucked under a worn hat.. She was more than plump, her thick-ankled feet thrust into low-heeled shoes. The girl in the green suit was walking quickly away. I felt as though I was split in two, so keen was my desire to follow her, and yet so deep was my longing for the woman whose spirit had truly companioned me and upheld my own. And there she stood. Her pale, plump face was gentle and sensible, her gray eyes had a warm and kindly twinkle. I did not hesitate. My fingers gripped the small worn blue leather copy of the book that was to identify me to her. This would not be love, but it would be something precious, something perhaps even better than love, a friendship for which I had been and must ever be grateful. I squared my shoulders and saluted and held out the book to the woman, even though while I spoke I felt choked by the bitterness of my disappointment. "I'm Lieutenant John Blanchard, and you must be Miss Maynell. I am so glad you could meet me; may I take you to dinner?" The woman's face broadened into a tolerant smile. "I don't know what this is about, son," she answered, "but the young lady in the green suit who just went by, she begged me to wear this rose on my coat. And she said if you were to ask me out to dinner, I should go and tell you that she is waiting for you in the big restaurant across the street. She said it was some kind of test!" It's not difficult to understand and admire Miss Maynell's wisdom. The true nature of a heart is seen in its response to the unattractive. "Tell me whom you love," Houssaye wrote, "And I will tell you who you are." !^NavFont02F0BE30007NGHHRE5F2F3 *-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-* - Email From: Maggie Stewart-Zimmerman - Zimmerman Family Web Page: http://www.infinet.com/~dzimmerm/index.html - For Updates on all my Ohio Pages join the Maggie_Ohio Maillist send an email to Maggie_Ohio-L-request@rootsweb.com - Ohio County USGenWeb Pages: **Erie Co. at http://www.infinet.com/~dzimmerm/Erie/erie.htm **Franklin Co. at http://www.infinet.com/~dzimmerm/Franklin/franklin1.html **Knox Co. at http://www.infinet.com/~dzimmerm/Knox/primepg.htm **Medina Co. at http://www.rootsweb.com/~ohmedina/index.htm **Miami Co. at http://www.infinet.com/~dzimmerm/Miami/miami.htm *-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-* - God Put Me On Earth to Accomplish a Certain Number of Things. 3. I tried this, a couple of weeks ago and got no response but, what the heck, I might as well try again. My first post to OHERIE. I know nothing about Erie County except that in 1808, when it was Huron County, some men including a Nathaniel BURDUE came from PA in a crude boat full of Moonshine and farming gear and landed somewhere in or around what is now Milan Township. Nat settled shortly after in Berlin (Heights, now)at a place that was to be, in 1976, the home of a fellow named Gary Limbird on East Main Street. I suspect old Nat as being my 3G Grandfather, and of course need to know more of him including, of course, his wife's name and their offspring. He was about 89 when de died in 1837, so if he had any children with him in Berlin, they were probably born back in PA. I'm anxiously waiting to GET some posts from this group. Thanks, Dave Bardue

    3. Susan I find no reference to Moyer Ohio in any of my stuff. I'm quite sure that it is not in Erie County. You could try the section on former town names on the Ohio GenWeb main page. I forget what it's called. But it is a good source for looking up towns that are defunct or have changed their names. Carol A. Steele
