    3. Hi Everyone! I am going to be out of town until after the Easter Weekend. I do have email access but none to the internet without paying long distance charges so there won't be many changes to the pages until I get home. Please do let me know of any problems. I like to keep things updated and running. Also I am in Stark County with access to the surrounding counties so please let me know if you need anything from the area and I will try to get it for you. If you like fun and graphics check out my April Fool's Day page at http://www.infinet.com/~dzimmerm/Holidays/h1index.html. (Be warned that this page takes a few minutes to load but I think it is worth it. The new queries and/or surname registrations are now on view on the My OHGenWeb pages. 3. ------------------------------------------------------------------ FORWARDED MESSAGE - Orig: 26-Mar-98 21:18 Subject: USGenWeb Notice ------------------------------------------------------------------ The following is the official statement about recent changes at USGenWeb. Please disseminate this to the public---thanks. Megan and the Board. **************** There has been a recent change in the main internet address for The USGenWeb Project. The project has learned that individuals associated with the server where our main URL was housed have formed a corporation, USGenWeb, Inc. Since The USGenWeb Project was founded on the belief of "free access for all," we are concerned there may be public confusion about the relationship between this for-profit corporation and The USGenWeb Project. As a result we have removed our presence from that server. Please be sure to change your bookmarks for The USGenWeb Project. This is Kip Sperry's new Genealogical Publishing Company (in Baltimore MD) book that should be off the press at the end of April. It will sell for $29.99. It shows how to read early American documents, such as wills, deeds, and town records, etc., and includes copies of many documents, with transcriptions. Included are documents dating from the nineteenth century to the seventeenth century. Although most are colonial documents, some Midwestern states records are shown and transcribed. 2. Maggie Stewart-Zimmerman
    3. Hi Everyone, I had a suggestion from someone and wanted to get your opinions. Do you all care if I make this a private list? Basically that means you can't post a message to the list unless you are subscribed. This will not prevent spam but I can lock the offender out as soon as I get there. I just don't understand what makes folks do this but this is the best solution that I can think of for the problem as I don't want the lists to close due to spam. Please let me know your opinions. Thanks a lot! 3. Hi Folks, I went to Dayton, Ohio for a day trip and ended up staying a week. My car decided to take a vacation at the car hospital. Sorry I have not been around. I want to apologize for those messages that got spammed to my lists. I found 25 of them in my mailbox on my arrival home. I will very shortly block that person from posting to any of my lists. I saw them on all the lists that I belong to ... the same message about hair replacement. Hope you all have a great weekend! 1. SPAM
    2. Maggie, Got the following SPAM yesterday. You are probably aware of what a serious problem this is becoming, and as you can see, I am on pacbell.net and we were totally shut down for days because of SPAM. (It was all over the California newspapers.) Please let everyone know that this isn't funny and the SPAMMER'S idea is to let them know that they have reached a valid address in order to keep sending this junk. From what I understand, the Office of Consumer Affairs is on a "search and destroy" mission regarding "SPAM" and the smart thing to do is just forward junk to uce@ftc.gov. The following says "to be removed . . . " but once you do it, you're on the list. It's not a "virus" but from my own experience, can really cause problems. 1. LONGCOR CALHOUN THOMPSON
    2. Richard Bollhorst
    3. I am researching my grandfathers the Peter Longcor, William Thompson and John Calhoun Families. They were all from Erie and Gallia counties and I have very little information on William Thompson except that he was born in Ohio and moved to the Iuka ans Omega areas later on. He married Bethina McGee and they had three sons and two daughters Frank, Will and Fred Ernest, MY GRANDFATHER, and the daughters Rose and Annie. I know even Less on John Calhoun except that he was born in either Ireland or Scotland and came to Gallopolis, Ohio, Gallia County, Ohio in the late 1700's possibly 1760. He married Jiminia Weatherholt. They had at least one son J.C. Calhoun who was born in Gallopolis December 1850 and died 1925. He came to Lucus Township, Effingham Co., Illinois in 1870. If anyone out there is also researching these families, I would love to hear from you and maybe we can swap information as I do have a little more information on both of them. Any little bit of information will be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time and trouble. Sandy Thompson Bollhorst thompson46@yahoo.com

    1. I'm My Own Grandpa
    2. Maggie Stewart-Zimmerman
    3. The below are the lyrics to a very popular song in the 30's...and has been done by several different artists over the years...I have it on my wall as a reminder that if I think I have problems.....well, this guy is worse.... I'm My Own Grandpaw by Dwight Latham and Moe Jaffe Many, many years ago when I was twenty-three I was married to a widow who was pretty as could be. This widow had a grown-up daughter who had hair of red. My father fell in love with her and soon they, too, were wed. This made my dad my son-in-law and changed my very life For my daughter was my mother, 'cause she was my father's wife. To complicate the matter, even though it brought me joy I soon became the father of a bouncing baby boy. My little baby then became a brother-in-law to dad And so became my uncle, thought it made me very sad For if he was my uncle, then that also made him brother Of the widow's grown-up daughter, who, of course, was my step-mother. I'm my own grandpaw I'm my own grandpaw It sounds funny I know but it really is so Oh, I'm my own grandpaw. Father's wife then had a son who kept them on the run And he became my grand-child, for he was my daughter's son. My wife is now my mother's mother, and it makes me blue Because, although she is my wife, she's my grandmother too. Now, if my wife is my grandmother, then I'm her grandchild And every time I think of it, it nearly drives me wild For now I have become the strangest case you ever saw As husband of my grandmother, I am my own grandpaw,... oh ... I'm my own grandpaw I'm my own grandpaw It sounds funny I know but it really is so Oh, I'm my own grandpaw. (c.) 1. Cemetery Records Tip
    2. Maggie Stewart-Zimmerman
    3. Cemetery records What are cemetery records and what kind of information can I find in them? Cemetery caretakers usually keep records of the names and death dates of those buried, as well as maps of the grave sites. They may also keep more detailed records, including the names of the deceased's relatives. In addition to these paper records, you will find tombstones. Tombstones can provide information such as birth and death dates and the names of other family members. Where can I find cemetery records? The best place to find cemetery records are in the cemeteries where your ancestors are buried. Often, if there is no longer a caretaker of the cemetery, records can be found in the holdings of local libraries, archives, or historical societies. The American Blue Book of Funeral Directors is a list of cemeteries by location. It may help you create a target list of cemeteries for your ancestors if you don't know where they are buried. In addition, the Daughters of American Revolution (DAR), Works Projects Administration (WPA), and the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers (DUP) have all transcribed some tombstones. Collections of transcribed tombstones can be found at the Family History Library of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and the Library of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Also check with genealogy societies in the area where you ancestors were buried; they may know of tombstone transcriptions for local cemeteries. 1. Other Danger Zones in Genealogy
    2. Maggie Stewart-Zimmerman
    3. Mistaken Identity A particularly difficult problem can arise during your research when two or more identically-named people of roughly the same age have lived jointly in one locale. You can also find people with the same name in the same family, such as mothers and daughters. Often, they are not related to each other, making it crucial that the genealogist not confuse them. As with other genealogical problems, you will have to use multiple sources and records to determine which identically-named individual is the one you are seeking and whether the other individuals bear any relationship to you. One suggestion is to extensively explore land and probate records to determine places of residence and other distinguishing information. In any event, be aware that some of the records you come across may contain inaccuracies, so obtain as much information as you can. Mistaken Identity: Part 2 One mistake genealogical researchers often make is to assume relationships between people with similar or identical surnames. Although this is very tempting, making such a mistake could seriously divert your exploration. Instead, where it seems appropriate, use identical or similar surnames to guide some of your research, but do not conclusively add anyone to your family tree without verifying their relationship from reliable records. Conflicting Records You probably know that you can find information such as birth dates, marriage dates, maiden names, and so on in more than one place. This is great, because that gives you several options when you're doing your research. However, what do you do when you find conflicting information? For example, what if you find one birth date for an individual on a marriage certificate and a different birth date for that individual on a death certificate? Of course the best thing to do is to check a few more records. Hopefully more records will help you determine which is the actual date. Another answer is to put more faith in the record that was created closer to the event or was created by the individual himself. For example, a birth date on a birth record is more likely to be accurate because it was created at the time of the event. A birth date on a marriage certificate has fairly good chances of being accurate because the individual probably wrote down his own birth date. A birth date on a death certificate has smaller chances of being accurate: first, it was created several years after the actual birth, and second, someone other than the individual had to have provided the birth date on the death certificate. Inaccurate Previous Research Needless to say, obtaining a pedigree from a book or other source could greatly speed your genealogical exploration. Indeed, an accurate pedigree can be a valuable tool for filling in holes in your research. Unfortunately, a few of the pedigrees you come across may be false. In some cases, the researcher compiling the pedigree may have distorted information in order to prove descent from a certain famous or noble person or to cover up a relationship to someone undesirable. In other cases, the researcher might have inferred, rather than proved, one or more of the familial relationships. As a result, the pedigree may diverge at some point to include people who are unrelated to you. Since fraudulent pedigrees pose a strong risk for side-tracking your research, it is very important that you take all steps possible to verify the accuracy of any pedigree you acquire. In particular, be sure that all the information in the pedigree conforms to what you have discovered in your prior research. If there are discrepancies, do what you can to ascertain the truth. Finally, it might be a good idea to learn what you can about the reputation of the individual who compiled the pedigree. Tall Tales Family tradition is another potential source of erroneous genealogical information. Frequently, such tradition holds that the family is descended from some particularly noteworthy or interesting ancestor, such as a high noble in England or a French Huguenot who fled persecution. In many of these cases, the relationship is fictitious, arising as the family history was passed down and embellished through the generations. In more extreme cases, the family may not have any roots in the supposed ancestors home country. Similar inaccuracies may also surround the history of the family surname and the deeds of various ancestors. Once again, using a variety of sources to piece together the family tree is crucial for ensuring accuracy. Although family traditions may serve as useful clues for directing your search, they should not be taken at face value. Impossibly Close Dates As you do your genealogical research, you may come across dates that don't seem to make sense. For example, children that were born too close together or a marriage date that comes after someone's death date. Your first conclusion may be that the dates are incorrect. This may be the case, and the best way to determine this is to look to other records for verification. If the dates were recorded before 1752, another answer is that the dates were recorded using the Julian calendar. With the Julian calendar, the first day of the year was March 25th and the last day of the year was March 24th. This means that dates such as July 10, 1507 and October 15, 1507 came before dates such as January 1, 1507 and February 28, 1507. 1. Finding Birth Dates
    2. Maggie Stewart-Zimmerman
    3. An individual's birth date can usually be found on any of the documents listed below. If you have the minimum information required to find one of these documents, select the name of that document. The items in the list are ordered from most to least important. If you do not have the minimum information required, read the paragraph below this list. Vital records To find an individual's birth date on a vital record, such as a birth, death, divorce, or marriage certificate, you must at least know the individual's full name at the time of the event, depending on the record, the approximate year of the event, and the state or county of the event, depending on when the event took place. Church records To find an individual's birth date in church marriage, baptism, or christening records, you must at least know the individual's name, and either the name of the church where the ceremony was performed or the name of the clergyman that appears on the certificate. Newspapers To find an individual's birth date in a birth announcement or an obituary, you must at least know the approximate date of birth or death, the individual's full name at the time of the event, and the state and city or town where the event took place (or where the announcement or obituary was likely to have been published). Bible records To find an individual's birth date in Bible records that are no longer in the family's possession, you must at least know the individual's full maiden name or married name, as well as the state and county in which the individual lived. Military records To find an individual's birth date in a military pension record, you must at least know the veteran's name, the branch of service, such as Army, Navy, or Marine Corps, the state from which the veteran entered the service, and the war in which the veteran served. If the period of service was after 1916, you must also know entry and release dates, military ID number, Social Security number, whether an officer or enlisted, and date of birth. Census records Beginning in 1850, the census recorded either each individual's age on their last birthday or their birth date. To find an individual's birth date in census records, you must at least know the individual's name, the state, and the county in which the individual lived when the census was taken. If you are using census records for 1870 or earlier, you can probably use an index that only requires the state and surname. Social Security Death Index To find an individual's birth date on the Social Security Death Index, you only need to know the individual's name. This index contains information about millions of people who died up through 1995. In addition, the individual must have applied for Social Security during their lifetime. International Genealogical Index To find an individual's birth date in the International Genealogical Index (IGI), you must at least know the individual's name. An approximate birth date or birthplace will help you narrow down your search.
