The Integrity Of Love (Dedicated in loving memory to my Grandma.) A man stopped at a flower shop to order some flowers to be wired to his mother who lived two hundred miles away. As he got out of his car he noticed a young girl sitting on the curb sobbing. He asked her what was wrong and she replied, "I wanted to buy a red rose for my mother. But I only have seventy-five cents, and a rose costs two dollars." The man smiled and said, "Come on in with me. I'll buy you a rose." He bought the little girl her rose and ordered his own mother's flowers. As they were leaving he offered the girl a ride home. She said, "Yes, please! You can take me to my mother." She directed him to a cemetery, where she placed the rose on a freshly dug grave. The man returned to the flower shop, cancelled the wire order, picked up a bouquet and drove the two hundred miles to his mother's house. -------------------------------------------- Just 4 Laughs! Hi - I'm new to the list. My gr gr gr grandfather William BLACKMAN died 9 May 1855 in Florence Twnshp and is buried Birmingham Cemetery. I noted on the Erie Co web site a reference to the following possible sources for records of that event: Grace Episcopal Church Sandusky Comm. Register 1851-1867 (obit?) Does anyone have access to these records, or know of someone who does, or an address I might write? Hi Everyone, This message came to me as the lady could not get to the home page. Hopefully someone can help her out. Maggie ------------------------------------------------------------------ FORWARDED MESSAGE - Orig: 6-May-98 0:53 Subject: ERIE COUNTY From: Wamcs INTERNET:Wamcs@aol.com To: Maggie Stewart-Zimmerman 73777,25 ------------------------------------------------------------------ Dear Maggie, I was so excited to see this site, however, as hard as I tried to get it I could not. I was very disappointed. I am in need of alot of help. My great grandfather's family lived on Kelleys Island, not sure yet if and how many of the seven children were born there. Parents were Irish and from Co Clare. John and Anne Lynch. They had seven children: Cornelius Joseph Leyden, Martin, John, Patrick, Michael Augustus, Margaret and Anna. Rumor has it my great grandfather was born on Kelleys but when I sent away for cert to Probate Court of Erie, they found no record. Is there some place else I should be looking? Birthdate of 9-13-1873. I know that the family lived on Kelleys for years as they were "South Quarry" workers. My great grandfather moved away in 1898 to the Philippines where he married and had four children, he died in 1921 and is still buried there. Also, one of the children John, was killed in "The Big Wind" , do you know of this? Disaster on Lake Erie around 1930 or 31. I have written 2 letters to Betty Pape, a volunteer historian of the island but have not gotten back a response. Any suggestions? Oh, there is also a B&B on Kelleys that was built by my great uncle, Patrick Leyden, it is on the historical register. Where can I find info such as birth certs, death ( I know they have a cemetary there on Kelleys) no response from the Catholic church St Michaels either. I would appreciate any help you can give me! Parable of the Rose A certain man planted a rose and watered it faithfully and before it blossomed, he examined it. He saw the bud that would soon blossom, but noticed thorns upon the stem and he thought, "How can any beautiful flower come from a plant burdened with so many sharp thorns?" Saddened by this thought, he neglected to water the rose, and before it was ready to bloom, it died. So it is with many people. Within every soul there is a rose. The Godlike qualities planted in us at birth growing amid the thorns of our faults. Many of us look at ourselves and see only the thorns, the defects. We despair, thinking that nothing good can possibly come from us. We neglect to water the good within us, and eventually it dies. We never realize our potential. Some people do not see the rose within themselves; someone else must show it to them. One of the greatest gifts a person can possess is to be able to reach past the thorns and find the rose within others. This is the characteristic of love ~ to look at a person and know their true faults. Accepting that person into your life, while recognizing the nobility in their soul. Help them to realize that they can overcome their faults. If we show them the rose, they will conquer their thorns. Only then will they blossom many times over. Bobbi RE: BLACK, WILLER, HARDEN/HARDIN, ATHERTON I checked "Erie County Ohio Cemetery Census Before 1909" with the following results: Maple Grove Cemetery, aka "Washburn Cemetery", Vermilion Twp.: BLACK, Augustus A., 1826-1898. BLACK, John C., 1819-Aug 15, 1906. BLACK, Josephine, d. Jan 21, 1858, 45y 2m 21d, w/o Wm. Black. ATHERTON, Elizabeth B. (BLACK), d. Jan 27, 1864, 58y 1m 27d, w/o Allen H. HARDING, Joseph, b. Feb 24, 1794 in MD, d. Aug 2, 1867, 73y 5m 9d, s/o Matthew. WILLER, none. Maple Grove Cemetery, Township Section, Vermilion Twp.: ATHERTON, none. BLACK, none. HARDEN, none. WILLER, none. Orchard Beach Cemetery, aka "Cuddleback Cemetery," Vermilion Twp.: ATHERTON, none. BLACK, none. HARDEN, none. WILLER, none. I have a feeling that the above Joseph HARDING could very well be your Joseph HARDEN/HARDIN. I find it interesting that Elizabeth B. Atherton's maiden name was BLACK (but maybe you knew that). Vermilion is actually in Erie Co & Lorain Co. You should request a lookup or post a querry on the Lorain Co. page. The above cemeteries are the only ones that are in Erie Co., and all of them are relatively small. It just seems likely that many Vermilion City and Township residents may well have been buried in one of the Lorain Co. Cemeteries. Good luck with your research -- I hope this helps. Carol A. Steele Sandusky, Erie Co., OH
I am looking for information regarding Lewis and Joseph HARDEN/HARDIN. In the 1850 census for Vermillion Township Lewis is 28 and living with William P. and Sarah BLACK. On September 15, 1858 he married Mary WILLER according to Erie County marriage records. Joseph HARDEN is 18 and living with Allen and Elizabeth B. ATHERTON in 1850 Vermillion Twp. census. Both Lewis and Joseph HARDEN, all of the BLACK's and Elizabeth ATHERTON were born in Maryland. I am trying to either connect or eliminate the two HARDEN/HARDIN's from my family tree. It is possible that the BLACK family may also be related. I would like any information on parents or siblings for these HARDEN's and/or BLACK's. Willing to help others with HARDEN/HARDIN's. Thanks, Bobbi Schirado
My Friend By Henson Towne Around the corner I have a friend In this great city that has no end, Yet the days go by and weeks rush on, And before I know it, a year is gone And I never see my old friends face, For life is a swift and terrible race, He knows I like him just as well, As in the days when I rang his bell, And he rang mine. If, we were younger then, And now we are busy, tired men. Tired of playing a foolish game, Tired of trying to make a name. "Tomorrow" I say "I will call on Jim" "Just to show that I'm thinking of him." But tomorrow comes and tomorrow goes, And distance between us grows and grows. Around the corner- yet miles away, Here's a telegram sir--"Jim died today." And that's what we get and deserve in the end. Around the corner, a vanished friend. If you love someone, tell them. Remember always to say what you mean. Never be afraid to express yourself. Take this opportunity to tell someone what they mean to you. Seize the day and have no regrets. Most importantly, stay close to your friends and family, for they have helped make you the person that you are today and are what it's all about anyway. Pass this along to your friends. Let it make a difference in your day and theirs. The difference between expressing love and having regrets which may stay around forever. !^NavFont02F041E0006NGHHKf973E Maggie's World of Courthouse Dust & Genealogy Fever http://www.infinet.com/~dzimmerm/mindex.html *-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-* God Put Me On Earth to Accomplish a Certain Number of Things. This is not genealogy related but it really shows my feelings about genealogists and people helping and supporting each other. Maggie ----------------------------------------------------- THE PIANO Wishing to encourage her young son's progress on the piano, a mother took her boy to a Paderewski concert. After they were seated, the mother spotted a friend in the audience and walked down the aisle to greet her. Seizing the opportunity to explore the wonders of the concert hall, the little boy rose and eventually explored his way through a door marked "NO ADMITTANCE." When the houselights dimmed and the concert was about to begin, the mother returned to her seat and discovered that the child was missing. Suddenly, the curtains parted and spotlights focused on the impressive Steinway on stage. In horror, the mother saw her little boy sitting at the keyboard, innocently picking out "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star." At that moment, the great piano master made his entrance, quickly moved to the piano, and whispered in he boy's ear, "Don't quit. Keep playing." Then leaning over, Paderewski reached down with his left hand and began filling in a bass part. Soon his right arm reached around to the other side of the child and he added a running obligato. Together, the old master and the young novice transformed a frightening situation into a wonderfully creative experience. And the audience was mesmerized. Whatever our situation in life and history--however outrageous, however desperate, whatever dry spell of the spirit, whatever dark night of the soul-- God is whispering deep within our beings, "Don't quit. Keep playing. You are not alone, Together we will transform the broken patterns into a masterwork of my creative art. Together, we will mesmerize the world with our song of peace." !^NavFont02F05E90007NGHHLEBB922 Maggie's World of Courthouse Dust & Genealogy Fever http://www.infinet.com/~dzimmerm/mindex.html *-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-* God Put Me On Earth to Accomplish a Certain Number of Things. Seeking info on ancestry of my great grandfather Edson McClure BLAKESLEY (1845-1931), who was born at Republic in Seneca County, OH, but grew up in Sandusky, Erie County. His parents were John BLAKESLEY and Isabel MCCLURE, who are listed in Erie in 1850 and 1860 censuses. Edson served in the 145th Ohio during the Civil War, and later worked for the railroad. He lived in various towns after the war, including: Aroma, IL; Ft. Wayne, IN; Kansas City, MO; Olathe, KS; and St. Petersburg, FL. He retired in Orlando, FL in the 1920's and is buried here. Hi Everyone, I just thought I would send a message and wish everyone Happy Easter. I will be heading back home tomorrow and hopefully things will get back to normal. I really have had fun in the counties. I went to Portage, Cuyahoga, Lorain, Summitt, Stark, Carroll, Jefferson, Columbiana, and Holmes. A couple more trips were cut short on Thursday as there were tornados on the ground near our home but thankfully they went north and there was no damage only hard winds, tornados in the sky with no real touchdowns. FYI, Dave bought me a present...a scanner so you all will be seeing more scanned in pictures in the near future. Monday I will get all the county update stuff done and up on the internet. LAWS OF GENEALOGY 1. The document containing evidence of missing links in your research invariably will be lost due to fire, flood or war. 2. The keeper of vital records you need will just have been insulted by another genealogist. 3. Your great great grandfather's obituary states he died leaving no issue of record. 4. The will you need is in the safe on the Titanic. 5. The ancient photo of 4 relatives, one of whom is your progenitor, carries the names of the other 3 6. Copies of old newspapers have holes occurring only on last names. 7. You learn that great aunt Matilda's executor just sold her life's collection of family genealogy material to a flea market dealer in New York City. 8. No one in your family tree ever did anything noteworthy, always rented property, was never sued, and was never named in any will. 9. Yours is the only last name not found among the 3 billion in the Mormon archives. 10. Ink fades and paper deteriorates at a rate inversely proportional to the value of the data recorded. 11. The critical link in your family tree is named "Smith". 12. The 37- volume, 16000-page history of your county of origin isn't indexed. !^NavFont02F03B30007NGHHJB54048 Maggie's World of Courthouse Dust & Genealogy Fever http://www.infinet.com/~dzimmerm/mindex.html *-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-* God Put Me On Earth to Accomplish a Certain Number of Things. I thought this was beautiful so I am sharing it with you all! ........... what that little line is worth I read of a man who stood to speak at the funeral of his friend. He referred to the dates on her tombstone from the beginning...to the end. He noted that first came the date of her birth and spoke of the second with tears, but he said that what mattered most of all was the dash between those years. For that dash represents all the time that she spent alive on earth, and now only those who loved her know what that little line is worth. For it matters not, how much we own; the cars, the house, the cash. What matters is how we live and love and how we spend our dash. So think about this long and hard, are there things you'd like to change? For you never know how much time is left. (You could be at "dash mid-range.") If we could just slow down enough to consider what's true and what's real, and always try to understand the way other people feel. And...be less quick to anger, and show appreciation more and love the people in our lives like we've never loved before. If we treat each other with respect, and more often wear a smile, remembering that this special dash might only last a little while. So, when your eulogy is being read with your life's actions to rehash... would you be pleased with the things they have to say about how you spent your dash? --Source unknown !^NavFont02F04630007NGHHK65A742 Maggie's World of Courthouse Dust & Genealogy Fever http://www.infinet.com/~dzimmerm/mindex.html *-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-* God Put Me On Earth to Accomplish a Certain Number of Things.
