    3. Hi Everyone, The following message should explain some of the problems in the databases and the fact that I can't upload at present. Thankfully, I have my own backups to all of our files so none will be lost. As always go check out rootsweb and donate to help the cause. They are providing the genealogy world with a great service. Maggie -----Original Message----- From: Dale 'Doc' Schneider [mailto:maddoc@rootsweb.com] Sent: Monday, June 01, 1998 7:35 PM To: STATE-COORD-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [STATE-COORD-L] (Fwd) HARDWARE FAILURE One of the big SCSI hard drives in RootsWeb's main Web server is failing. I'm running backups now, and I hope I can get a current tape made before the drive fails entirely. I have a spare drive ready on the shelf, and if all goes well I'll be installing it this afternoon. There will probably be some annoying side-effects associated with the move to the new drive, but I'm hoping we'll be back to fully normal operations by tomorrow night. We may be up and down quite a bit for the next 36 hours as I work through the problems. These are the times when I look forward to the day that we can afford to have RAID-5 arrays on all our servers. (RAID-5 arrays are composed of multiple redundant drives, and the failure of a single drive has no effect on the operation of the overall array.) Thanks to all the Members, Sponsors, Donors, and Patrons who have provided the resources that allowed us to have spare drives available for emergencies like this! I'll get us back on the air as fast as I can, B. - -- Dr. Brian Leverich Co-moderator, soc.genealogy.methods/GENMTD-L RootsWeb Genealogical Data Cooperative http://www.rootsweb.com/ P.O. 3. David I found the following in the index to the Erie Co. OH 1880 Census: PARKER, Eliha B., ERMA page 82C. " , Jackson, ERMA " 80C. " , John, ERMA " 80C. " , Harry, ERW2 " 243C. " , Joseph, ERW2 " 222C. " , George, ERPE " 143B. " , Jas. D., ERPE " 143B. I don't know how familiar you are with the Census, but ERMA=Margaretta Twp., ERPE=Perkins Twp., ERW2=Ward 2 in Sandusky City. The page number is the actual page on the census where the named individual can be found. Note: only the head of household, or anyone with a different surname are indexed. I also found the following in the "Erie County Ohio Cemetery Census Before 1909": Castalia Cemetery: Andrew J. PARKER, b. June 16, 1864, d. Aug. 30, 1864, s/o J. & C. PARKER. Catharine (SCHOCH) PARKER, b. 1828, d. 1904, w/o Jackson PARKER. Margaretha V. (GASTEIER) PARKER, b. 1863, d. 1908, w/o Geo. F. Mary Ann PARKER, d. Sept. 2, 1858, 5yrs. 10d., d/o J. & C. PARKER. Mary (TOMPKINS) PARKER, b. 1845, d. 1901, w/o Elihu PARKER. There is alsoa granite tabloid erected in the cemetery by the citizens of Margaretta Twp. (not all of the people listed are buried in Castalia Cemetery). Among the names are: Elihu PARKER, & J.C. PARKER. Graves-White Cemetery: none Venice Cemetery: none I also found the following in Oakland Cemetery (Sandusky), since they are the only PARKERS listed, I thought I would include them: Laura F. (Lora) PARKER, b. Sept. 16, 1871, d. Sept. 16, 1873, d/o J.D. and S.S. Ann PARKER, interred Nov 17, 1883, 92 yrs. Hope this helps in you research! Carol A. Steele Sandusky, Erie Co., OH

    3. I thought this said it in a really wonderful way. Maggie A note on e-mail etiquette: When e-mail was new, we all had to learn a new type of etiquette. For example, we learned that USING ALL CAPS is the equivalent of SHOUTING. We also learned to run a spell checker on everything before we sent it. Then, sometimes, we found ourselves wanting to BLAST somebody whose words had rubbed us the wrong way. The best advice I ever heard on the subject, however, was this: "Always write your messages as though you were addressing a member of the clergy with whom you are not familiar." Good advice. ==== GenHumor Mailing List ==== !^NavFont02F01FF0006NGHHIG71D0 Maggie's World of Courthouse Dust & Genealogy Fever http://www.infinet.com/~dzimmerm/mindex.html *-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-* God Put Me On Earth to Accomplish a Certain Number of Things. 1. Place Locator
    2. Maggie Stewart-Zimmerman
    3. >From OHGEN-L list Hi all, The following was taken from Dick Eastman's most recent newsletter. - Getty Thesaurus of Geographic Names Two weeks ago I wrote about the geographic name server at MIT. This is an excellent database of geographic names from around the U.S. and can be valuable to genealogists trying to find a small town mentioned in old records. Several people wrote to me after I published that article to tell me of still other online name servers. I have looked at several but the one that really impressed me is the Getty Thesaurus of Geographic Names produced by the Getty Information Institute. This online geographic name server is much like the one I mentioned earlier. However, it contains nearly 1 million place names representing approximately 900,000 places around the world. For instance, anyone looking for a town called Billericay can quickly find that it is in Essex, England at 51 degrees 38 minutes North, 00 degrees 25 minutes East. A good map of England can then be used to quickly locate these geographic coordinates. I tried a harder search: I entered "Wassookeag" and quickly found the listing for the lake where I spent boyhood summers. It is at Lat: 45 01 N Long: 069 18 W. Every name I could think of was in the name server. It even has multiple variations of each location. Beijing, Peking, Pei-Ching and Pekin all point to China's capital. Some of the locations have brief descriptions, such as this one for a remote city where I once spent two weeks of my life: Changchun (inhabited place) Lat: 43 50 N Long: 125 20 E Note - Formerly a small village until end of 18th cen. when farmers were brought in from Shandong province; thrived after 1900; captured by Russian paratroopers during World War II in 1945; was scene of conflicts in Chinese civil war 1946-1947. If you are looking for that small place where your ancestors lived, check out the Getty Thesaurus of Geographic Names at: http://www.gii.getty.edu/tgn_browser My thanks to Dave Rencher for letting me know about this one. If you want to see the current issue as well as back issues of the newsletter, look on the World Wide Web at: http://www.ancestry.com/columns/eastman/index.htm Please feel free to copy this subscription information and pass it on to anyone else who you think might be interested in obtaining a free subscription. !^NavFont02F07920007NGHHN9373CE Maggie's World of Courthouse Dust & Genealogy Fever http://www.infinet.com/~dzimmerm/mindex.html *-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-* God Put Me On Earth to Accomplish a Certain Number of Things. 3. >From Chester Co., PA GenWeb Page: The Twelve Steps of Gene-Aholics Anonymous 1. We admitted that we were powerless over our database-that our files had become unmanageable. 2. Came to believe that a GEDCOM bigger than our own could restore us to sanity. 3. Made a decision to turn our data and our charts over to a professional genealogy program. 4. Made a searching and fearless inventory of our files. 5. Admitted to the newsgroup, ourselves and to another genealogist the exact nature of our ancestors. 6. Were entirely ready to have others others scoff at our research. 7. Humbly asked them to help us clarify our sources. 8. Made a list of all ancestors we had not documented and became willing to find proper sources for them all. 9. Made changes to all records wherever possible, except when to do so would slander their memory or others. 10. Continued to take record inventories and when we didn't have a proper source, promptly admitted it. 11. Sought through webpages on the internet to improve the documentation of our ancestors, praying only for the knowledge of their whereabouts and the fortitude to list all the sources. 12. Having had a much improved genealogy as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to all genealogists and to practice these steps in all our databases. ==== GenHumor Mailing List ==== !^NavFont02F04550007NGHHK5716C8 Maggie's World of Courthouse Dust & Genealogy Fever http://www.infinet.com/~dzimmerm/mindex.html *-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-* God Put Me On Earth to Accomplish a Certain Number of Things. 1. Grandma and the Family Tree
    2. Maggie Stewart-Zimmerman
    3. This is a correction to a previous post! ------------------------------------------------------------------ I saw this poem in the Warren Co. genealogical newsletter stating that the author had seen it and had written in with the corrected version and her permission to print it in the newsletter. It was written by Barbara Adams of Sidney, Ohio in 1967. Please accredit this poem to her. She well deserves it. Grandma and the Family Tree There's been a change in Grandma, we've noticed her of late, She's always reading history or jotting down some date. She's tracing back the family, we'll all have pedigrees. Oh, Grandma's got a hobby, she's climbing Family Trees. Poor Grandpa does the cooking and now, or so he states, that worst of all, he has to wash the cups and dinner plates. Grandma can't be bothered, she's busy as a bee Compiling genealogy - for the Family Tree. She has no time to baby-sit, the curtains are a fright, No buttons left on Grandpa's shirt, the flower bed's a sight. She's given up her club work, the serials on TV, The only thing she does nowadays is climb the Family Tree. She goes down to the courthouse and studies ancient lore, We know more about our forebears than we ever knew before. The books are old and dusty, they make poor Grandma sneeze. A minor irritation - when you're climbing Family Trees. The mail is all for Grandma, it comes from near and far, Last week she got the proof she needs to join the DAR. A worthwhile avocation, to that we all agree, A monumental project, to climb the Family Tree. Now some folks came from Scotland and some from Galway Bay, Some were French as pastry, some German, all the way. Some went on west to stake their claim, some stayed near by the sea. Grandma hopes to find them all as she climbs the Family Tree. She wanders through the graveyard in search of date or name, The rich, the poor, the in between, all sleeping there the same. She pauses now and then to rest, fanned by a gentle breeze That blows above the Fathers of all our Family Trees. There were pioneers and Patriots mixed in our kith and kin Who blazed the paths of wilderness and fought through thick and thin. But none more staunch than Grandma, whose eyes light up with glee Each time she finds a missing branch for the Family Tree. Their skills were wide and varied, from carpenter to cook And one (Alas!) the record shows was hopelessly a crook. Blacksmith, weaver, farmer, judge, some tutored for a fee, Long lost in time, now all recorded on the Family Tree. To some it's just a hobby, to Grandma it's much more, She knows the joys and heartaches of those who went before. They loved, they lost, they laughed, they wept, and now for you and me They live again in spirit, around the Family Tree. At last she's nearly finished and we are each exposed. Life will be the same again, this we all supposed! Grandma will cook and sew, serve cookies with our tea. We'll all be fat, just as before that wretched Family Tree. Sad to relate, the Preacher called and visited for a spell, We talked about the Gospel, and other things as well, The heathen folk, the poor and then - t'was fate, it had to be, The Preacher, too, was neatly snared by Grandma and the Family Tree. He never knew his Grandpa, this mother's name was ........ Clark? He and Grandma talked and talked, outside it grew quite dark, We'd hoped our fears were groundless, but just like some disease, Grandma's become an addict - she's hooked on Family Trees! Our souls were filled with sorrow, our hearts sank with dismay, Our ears could scarce believe the words we heard our Grandma say, "It surely is a lucky thing that you have come to me, I know exactly how it's done, I'll climb YOUR Family Tree !" ==== GenHumor Mailing List ==== !^NavFont02F0BFA0007NGHHRFCF40E Maggie's World of Courthouse Dust & Genealogy Fever http://www.infinet.com/~dzimmerm/mindex.html *-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-* God Put Me On Earth to Accomplish a Certain Number of Things. 1. Genealogy Pox
    2. Maggie Stewart-Zimmerman
    3. I received this via email and thought everyone might enjoy it. Genealogy Pox Symptoms: Continual complaint as to need for names, dates and places. Patient has blank expression, is sometimes deaf to spouse and children. Has no taste for work of any kind, except feverishly looking through records at libraries and court houses. Has compulsions to write letters. Swears at mailmen when they do not leave mail. Frequents strange places such as cemeteries, ruins, and remote, desolate areas. Makes secret phone calls at night. Hides phone bills from spouse and mumbles to self. Has strange faraway look in eyes. No known Cure..... Treatment: Medication is useless. Disease is not fatal but gets progressively worse. Patient should attend genealogy workshops, subscribe to genealogical magazines, and be given a quiet corner in the house where he/she can be alone. !^NavFont02F02D3000ENGHOG|NG41HID5A25B Maggie's World of Courthouse Dust & Genealogy Fever http://www.infinet.com/~dzimmerm/mindex.html *-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-* God Put Me On Earth to Accomplish a Certain Number of Things. 1. FW: Online: The New Search Engine Server
    2. Maggie Stewart-Zimmerman
    3. [This is a public announcement -- it may be forwarded to any appropriate audience. -B] The new search engine server is now online and can operate at the speed of a full T1 connection. Courtesy of hacks by Dale Schneider, you can search the USGenWeb Archives, now with *headlines* and *updated* to within the last 24 hours, at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ussearch.htm Courtesy of hacks by Karen Isaacson, you can search the archives of any mailing list (except those withdrawn by the listowner), now with nicer *formats* and *updated* to within the last 24 hours, at: http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl I'd also like to explicitly thank the folks who provided the resources that have made this new facility possible: o RootsWeb's Patrons, Donors, Sponsors, and Members. o Palladium Interactive, developers of the Ultimate Family Tree software for genealogists. Folks interested in helping RootsWeb provide new facilities can become Members by using the Web form at: http://www.rootsweb.com/rootsweb/how-to-subscribe.html By the way, the next server we'll be bringing online will be a box dedicated to supporting Marc Nozell's HTMLized versions of the mailing list archives. We should have that box online within 48 hours, though it's reasonable to expect Marc to need a little time after that to get his software installed. (: Projects after that include a dedicated IRC server, upgrading the mail hub, upgrading the main Web server, building a NT-based FrontPage server, bringing a "dirtylists" list server online, and bringing a third ordinary list server online. [ The "dirtylists" server is for the big, rarely used announcement lists. We've developed a number of those things with 5,000 to 300,000 subscribers, and every time a post drops we kick the daylights out of the list server with hundreds or even thousands of bounces. We need a specially tuned box to handle these turkeys. ] No rest for the wicked, I suppose ...
