    2. David Zimmerman
    3. CENSUS TAKER It was the first day of census, and all through the land; The pollster was ready ... a black book in hand. He mounted his horse for a long dusty ride; His book and some quills were tucked close by his side. A long winding ride down a road barely there; Toward the smell of fresh bread wafting, up through the air. The woman was tired, with lines on her face; And wisps of brown hair she tucked back into place. She gave him some water ... as they sat at the table; And she answered his questions ... the best she was able. He asked of her children... Yes, she had quite a few; The oldest was twenty, the youngest not two. She held up a toddler with cheeks round and red; his sister, she whispered, was napping in bed. She noted each person who lived there with pride; And she felt the faint stirrings of the wee one inside. He noted the sex, the color, the age... The marks from the quill soon filled up the page. At the number of children, she nodded her head; And saw her lips quiver for the three that were dead. The places of birth she "never forgot"; Was it Kansas? or Utah? or Oregon ... or not? They came from Scotland, of that she was clear; But she wasn't quite sure just how long they'd been here. They spoke of employment, of schooling and such; They could read some .and write some .. though really not much. When the questions were answered, his job there was done; So he mounted his horse and he rode toward the sun. We can almost imagine his voice loud and clear; "May God bless you all for another ten years." Now picture a time warp ... its' now you and me; As we search for the people on our family tree. We squint at the census and scroll down so slow; As we search for that entry from long, long ago. Could they only imagine on that long ago day; That the entries they made would effect us this way? If they knew, would they wonder at the yearning we feel; And the searching that makes them so increasingly real. We can hear if we listen the words they impart; Through their blood in our veins and their voice in our heart. 1. Trips in NE Ohio!
    2. David Zimmerman
    3. Hi Everyone, I am trying to get caught up and get ready to go home. Following is my proposed schedule. If you have something not too complicated please let me know. Please retell me if you sent something before because mom went on a cleaning binge and rearranged my papers in "neat stacks" which means the stuff that was sorted by county is now one big blob! This thursday - Back to Medina to get wills I did not get the last time. Probably this friday down to Marietta, Washington County and over into Wood County, WVA and Wirt County, WVA. These are primarily for my own research but if you need something just let me know. BTW, I will be in the Belpre, Rockford Cemetery to visit my Grandma so if someone wants me to find a grave let me know. Also I will be at the Elizabeth, Wirt County, WVA cemeteries so if you want me to look let me know. Of course I will wander into the courthouses at all places as that is just me. I am on a mission to find my Morris/McDonald Ancestors. Anytime for the next two weeks - Stark County, Carroll County, Portage County, Holmes County, Wayne County, Tuscarawas County and if you are really nice I could go down to Lisbon, Columbiana County. Next Week - One day trip to Chardon, Geauga County. (I have paid research to do there but if it is something simple I will be glad to look.) Ravenna, Portage County - probably will be wednesday or friday. Hopefully, Cleveland, Cuyahoga County as I want to see what the research is like at the Cleveland Public Library. 3. Hi Everyone, Well things are finally looking up. Mom is getting well although she gets depressed and does not want to get up in the morning but who am I to complain about getting up late (grin)! As you all see from my posting times, I am a night owl. Dave brought Critter over here last weekend and he is flourishing with special attention and even trying to walk on his broken side. I guess both Dave and Critter feel better. I have two weeks now to get some research done. (See other message for details.) And I finally get to go home! However there will be about a week lag for me to put my house back together (I was home over the weekend and had to just leave.) as I left my husband and my 19yo daughter alone in the home and boy did they not do anything. I will be going home Labor Day Weekend September 5th or 6th! 1. Insp-A Harvard Story
    2. David Zimmerman
    3. Since college is starting pretty soon, I thought this story is rather appropriate. LadyHawke ~*~*~*~*~*~* "Harvard" The President of Harvard made a mistake by prejudging people and it cost him dearly. A lady in a faded gingham dress and her husband, dressed in a homespun threadbare suit, stepped off the train in Boston, and walked timidly without an appointment into the president's outer office. The secretary could tell in a moment that such backwoods, country hicks had no business at Harvard and probably didn't even deserve to be in Cambridge. She frowned. "We want to see the president," the man said softly. "He'll be busy all day," the secretary snapped. "We'll wait," the lady replied. For hours, the secretary ignored them, hoping that the couple would finally become discouraged and go away. They didn't. And the secretary grew frustrated and finally decided to disturb the president, even though it was a chore she always regretted to do. "Maybe if they just see you for a few minutes, they'll leave," she told him. And he signed in exasperation and nodded. Someone of his importance obviously didn't have the time to spend with them, but he detested gingham dresses and homespun suits cluttering up his outer office. The president, stern-faced with dignity, strutted toward the couple. The lady told him, "We had a son that attended Harvard for one year. He loved Harvard. He was happy here. But about a year ago, he was accidentally killed. And my husband and I would like to erect a memorial to him, somewhere on campus." The president wasn't touched; he was shocked. "Madam," he said gruffly, "We can't put up a statue for every person who attended Harvard and died. If we did, this place would look like a cemetery." "Oh, no," the lady explained quickly, "We don't want to erect a statue. We thought we would like to give a building to Harvard. The president rolled his eyes. He glanced at the gingham dress and homespun suit, then exclaimed, "A building! Do you have any earthly idea how much a building costs? We have over seven and a half million dollars in the physical plant at Harvard." For a moment the lady was silent. The president was pleased. He could get rid of them now. And the lady turned to her husband and said quietly, "Is that all it costs to start a University? Why don't we just start our own?" Her husband nodded. The president's face wilted in confusion and bewilderment. And Mr. and Mrs. Leland Stanford walked away, traveling to Palo Alto, California, where they established the University that bears their name, a memorial to a son that Harvard no longer cared about. <>*<>*<>*<>*<>*<>*<>*<>*<>*<>*<>*<>*<>*<>*<>*<>*<> Joke du Jour is spreading sexy Laughter (and more!) to 115 Countries on Seven Continents! 1. Happy Friendship Week!
    2. David Zimmerman
    3. I received this at work today from a friend. It arrived at a down momment and provided a great lift for me. Hope it lifts you as well. FRIENDS Mark was walking home from school one day when he noticed the boy ahead of him had tripped and dropped all of the books he was carrying, along with two sweaters, a baseball bat, a glove and a small tape recorder. Mark knelt down and helped the boy pick up the scattered articles. Since they were going the same way, he helped to carry part of the burden. As they walked Mark discovered the boy's name was Bill, that he loved video games, baseball and history, and that he was having lots of trouble with his other subjects and that he had just broken up with his girlfriend. They arrived at Bill's home first and Mark was invited in for a Coke and to watch some television. The afternoon passed pleasantly with a few laughs and some shared small talk, then Mark went home. They continued to see each other around school, had lunch together once or twice, then both graduated from junior high school. They ended up in the same high school where they had brief contacts over the years. Finally the long-awaited senior year came and three weeks before graduation, Bill asked Mark if they could talk. Bill reminded him of the day years ago when they had first met. "Did you ever wonder why I was carrying so many things home that day?" asked Bill. "You see, I cleaned out my locker because I didn't want to leave a mess for anyone else. I had stored away some of my mothers sleeping pills and I was going home to commit suicide. But after we spent some time together talking and laughing, I realized that if I had killed myself, I would have missed that time and so many others that might follow. So you see, Mark, when you picked up those books that day, you did a lot more, you saved my life. Every little hello, every little smile, every helping hand saves a hurting heart. Pass it on. With this email also comes the token that says that YOU are special. There's a miracle called Friendship that dwells in the heart. You don't know how it happens or when it gets started but, you know the special lift it always brings and you realize that Friendship Is God's most precious gift! It's National Friendship Week Friends are a very rare jewel, indeed. They make you smile and encourage you to succeed. They lend an ear, they share a word of praise, and they always want to open their heart to us. Show your friends how much you care.....Send this to everyone you consider a FRIEND, even the person that sent this to you. If it comes back to you, then you'll know you have a Friend for life. Show your friends how much you appreciate them and what they mean to you......... Hall rlhall@voyager.net DATE: 8/18/98 I am trying to locate any information on a Hannah WALLIS, widow of a Samuel TAYLOR, married to a second husband J. WALLIS and living in or near Huron during the 1830s or 1840s near a married daughter Louisa (nee TAYLOR). Hannah appears as the head of the family in the 1810 census of Berkshire Twp., Franklin Co., Vermont, where her son Jared Morey TAYLOR was born in 1804 and daughter Louisa TAYLOR either in 1805 or 1808. I am especially interested in whether she was living in or near Plattsburg, N.Y., in 1814. I am Robert L. Hall, Libertyville, IL (rlhall@voyager.net). !^NavFont02F02AA0007NGHHIAC6484 Maggie's World of Courthouse Dust & Genealogy Fever http://www.infinet.com/~dzimmerm/mindex.html *-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-* God Put Me On Earth to Accomplish a Certain Number of Things.
