Thanks to everyone for their patience. I actually come back with good and better news. A little background. Overnight my right knee swelled up to four times it's normal size and I was sitting with ice on knee and the knee elevated. The doc thought I had a cancerous tumor on that knee but it turns out to be "only" arthritis. He started me on medicine and I don't have to sit with it elevated all the time. I can finally sit at the keyboard for more than two minutes at a time. Of course this was after MANY tests that I hopefully will never have to have again. The good news is that it is arthritis but I can't drive for two weeks but will be able to be again. The better news is that I am so relieved and all those things that I kept putting off should get done if there are enough hours in the day. Thanks for all the prayers and messages that I have received. I do need to let you know that I have 980 backed up messages to get through then I will start messing with stuff. From what my Grandmother tells me, the Cedar Point causway was our land at one time. My family owned and operated the Arheit's Dairy. I really am not sure exactly how it goes, anyone with more info ( LETS GET IT ON) HA HA!!! My Grandmother's maiden name is Arheit she is 86 years. She remembers alot of things about the farm. Our family came from Germany and landed there. The dairy ran from the 1880's till the 30's or 40's. Lisa
Hello All, I'll take a stab from memory on some nostalgia about Indian Lake. My Grandmother (Nelle R. Deardorff Sloan b. 17 Oct 1889 d. 21 Apr 1976) used to tell me that the first time she went up to the Lake she traveled on a corduroy road (for you yougsters that is where the surface of the road was made from logs). The first winter that she stayed there she said that there were only two others that spent the entire winter: Father Wolf, and I can't remember for sure if it was French Wilgus or who. She owned Cottonwood Resort, which was located right next to the spillway. While I was growing up I got to know Diamond Lil Beatley, Russ Schuler, the Davis family, the Tate family, and many other of the families that were among the first to live at Indian Lake. My father used to tell the story of how he set in and played drums with most of the Big Name Bands. They used to have a large open air dance pavillion at the amusement park at Russells Point. Sometimes they would have two name bands one at each end and charge 5 cents per dance. If anyone has a particular questions about Indian Lake I'll try to answer them. Somewhere I have a booklet on the history of Indian Lake. I think that I might have left that at my mothers home in Richmond, IN. I'll contact my sister and have her look around for it. If anyone has any old pictures or books on the history of Indian Lake I would love to get a copy of them. Thanks for the trip down memory lane, Dave Sloan

------------------------------------------------------------------ FORWARDED MESSAGE - Orig: 15-Sep-98 11:01 ------------------------------------------------------------------ IN REGARDS TO THE : > ------------------------------------------------------------------ > FORWARDED MESSAGE - Orig: 11-Sep-98 12:13 > From: Diana Matthiesen 72613,1415 > ------------------------------------------------------------------ > Diana and To All who have read "Lookups on Broderbund CDs": I do look-ups and regard it no more than going to a library where the same information is available from the same book which is available to all who live near the Library. If you are taking one line or one page from a book or a CD it does not violate a copyright any more than a library does which has the same book available for all to use for research. I have been in libraries where I wanted to copy several pages of a book and was not allowed to because it violated the copyright laws but was allowed to copy a page or two. A Look-up is only giving a small look into those records and at the same time might end up helping the company or researcher to sell the book to the person requesting the look up. I feel that Look-ups are valuable and helpful to all. In this same regard, I feel that it is MANDITORY for the Look-up to give the information requested plus THE NAME OF THE BOOK, ITS AUTHOR, THE PUBLISHER'S NAME (BOOK OR CD) , DATE OF PUBLICATION AND THE PAGE OR LOCATION WHERE THE INFORMATION WAS FOUND. In addition, if the person has requested a considerable amount of information, the Look-up should also give information where the book can be purchased, if it is known, and suggest the he/she purchase the book since it would be advantageous to the requester. (I especially direct this to all who are doing look-ups) Look-ups are a vital part of genealogy on the internet but also must be taken for what it is - a tertiary record - fraught with potential errors. (It is a copy of a copy of a copy etc.) It is only a guide or a path and it is the responsibility for the requester to verify this data with a primary source or an overwhelming preponderance of supporting data which indicates that this information is indeed true. One other thought in connection with the Broderbund CDs and the extensively used IGI and Ancestral Files of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints ( commonly called the Mormon Church) ; New information is received from mostly from people who are not professional genealogists, the information is then added to a large data base and it is not double checked for accuracy !!! I have found multiple dates and locations for the same event in the same person's life. These and look up data must be regarded as a path to finding the PRIMARY DATA RECORD. This idea must must be adhered to if the research is to maintain an accurate data base of his/hers ancestors. Paul E. Cavalier lecavalier1@juno.com ------------------------------------ Paul, AMEN! I really think that the stuff is only copyrighted in it's CD format so if someone types it in it is not really an infringement. And as with all genealogy especially before 1900 it is more of what people choose to pass on. Hi Everyone, I just could not resist this one. It just begged to be shared. Maggie ------------------------------------------------------------------ These questions are from actual correspondence received by the LDS Family History Library: Our 2nd great-grandfather was found dead crossing the plains in the library. He was married 3 times in the endowment house and has 21 children. For running down Wheelers, I will send $3 more. He and his daughter are listed as not being born. I would like to find out if I have any living relatives or dead relatives or ancestors in my family. Will you send me a list of all the Dripps in your library? My grandfather died at age 3. We are sending you 5 children in a seperate envelope. Documentation: Family Bible in possession of Aunt Merle until tornado hit Topeka, Kansas, now only the Good Lord knows where it is.... The wife of #22 could not be found; I have worked on her for 30 years without success; now see what you can do. I have a hard time finding myself in London; if I was there I was very small and cannot be found. This family had 7 nephews that I am unable to find; if you know who they are, please add them to the list. We lost our grandmother. Will you please send us a copy? Will you please send me the name of my first wife. I have forgotten her name. A 14 year old boy wrote: "I do not want you to do research for me. Will you please send me all the material on the Welch line in the U.S., England and Scotland countries? I will do the research." +++++++++++++++++++++++ ++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Dear ----, I have spent several years looking for family information and have, as of this week, decided that I am a descendent of the family branch called UNKNOWNS. I find kazillions with the names of my branches but my branches don't seem to attach to any trees in the known world. Therefore, I have concluded that there are three ways in which the UNKNOWNS originated: 1. We were sent to the colonies by the British government in the 1700's to spy. We so excelled in the art of blending in with the flora and fauna that no one knew we were here...even the British lost contact with us. 2. We were dropped off here by one of the space ships that some think visited our planet. Again, we were outstanding in the ability to blend in and so were never noticed. Somewhere down the line someone forgot to tell us that we are from another planet. I think the space ships some people report seeing and being captured by, are our true family and they are looking for us to take us home. 3. Immaculate conception...which explains itself. 4. I really don't exist. I am but a figment of someone's imagination but I don't know who that someone is. I am very frustrated as you can tell. Do you have a section in this area for us UNKNOWNs to apply to families for adoption so that we can attach our tiny branch buds and belong to some tree...any tree? Folks, I know you won't see this until after the problem is solved but I thought I would send it so that I don't have to keep posting why the list was not working and to let you know what is done with the money that is donated to rootsweb. Maggie ------------------------------------------------------------------ FORWARDED MESSAGE - Orig: 12-Sep-98 17:51 ------------------------------------------------------------------ Hi, folks -- I'm Tim Pierce, one of the senior system administrators at RootsWeb. Our main list server, lists.rootsweb.com, has been down since this morning. Brian Leverich is presently hard at work installing a new disk and preparing to reinstall the operating system. Once that's done, Karen Isaacson and I will reinstall the mailing list software and run some tests to make sure that everything is operating smoothly. As long as the system is not working, we're also going to try to take advantage of this down time by preparing a new, faster server for that machine, which is woefully underpowered for the amount of mail that passes through it. Brian will begin building that server while Karen and I get the old one back on the air. We expect to have the server running again by midnight (U.S. East Coast time) and hope to have the backlogged mail cleared out by Sunday morning. Thankfully, we don't believe that any mail has been lost (only delayed), and all of the archives appear to be intact. Thanks to everyone for your patience. I saw this message and thought that maybe we should address it. I have on my researcher lists folks looking up stuff. Maybe I will remove the copyrighted name and say will do lookups in the 1880 census for example. Thanks for reading this and understanding. Maggie ------------------------------------------------------------------ FORWARDED MESSAGE - Orig: 11-Sep-98 12:13 From: Diana Matthiesen 72613,1415 ------------------------------------------------------------------ I hate to be a wet blanket, folks, but. . . With regard to doing lookups on Broderbund CDs (or any other commercially produced CD or book currently under copyright), I think users need to re-read the copyright information. I believe posting an offer to do "lookups" in Broderbund CDs violates their copyright, in two ways, the first being the most dangerous because it is the most easily prosecuted: 1) Mainly, it reduces the market for their CDs. (Why buy a CD if there's someone out there who will do a lookup for free?) 2) By posting an offer online, you are making the data on the disk available *to more than one person at a time*, which is explicitly outside Broderbund's stated definition of "fair use." Broderbund allows users to share *very limited* amounts of information with friends and family, one person and one datum at a time. Any offer to do lookups broadcast online is an offer to produce multiple data to many hundreds or even thousands of people. So far, Broderbund appears not to have taken legal action against anyone offering lookups. Let's face it, it would be terrible public relations for them to do so. But at some point, if lookups become too rampant (and this is a phenomenon that I perceive happening), they may decide to make an example of someone. And because the legal penalties for copyright infringement are severe (not to mention that you'll spend the rest of your life paying off your lawyer), I would recommend that anyone contemplating making such an offer contact Broderbund and get *written* permission from them to do so. The phone number for their Copyright Permission department is 1-415-382-3135. (However, I can save you the price of that phone call and tell you they will say, "No.") I'm sorry to be so negative, because I use and appreciate online lookups, but of material that is either 1) not under copyright protection (e.g., compilations made by the person offering to do the lookup), or 2) on which the copyright has run out (e.g., anything published in the 1800s), or 3) for which written permission has been granted by the current copyright owner. As a fellow genealogist, I find myself dismayed at having to pay (dearly sometimes) for public records that I believe should be freely available on the web. (Of all the things politicians waste our tax money on, computerizing public records would be one expenditure I would gladly support -- the SSDI and BLM databases are two notable examples of how useful such databases are.) But for the present, as in the past, the fact is that it takes a lot of time, effort, and expense to privately gather, edit, and publish these records. For some of us, genealogy is a labor of love, and we post the results of our *primary record gathering* online for others to use at will, without cost. But until the day comes when all the primary data are freely available online, we should expect to have to pay someone for their efforts if they choose to sell the product of their labor for profit. And we should recognize that THE PROFIT MOTIVE IS WHAT HAS MADE SO MANY PRIMARY RECORDS AND FAMILY HISTORIES/GENEALOGIES AVAILABLE. So, every time we offer someone information off a commercial CD or in-print book, we are reducing the publisher's incentive to create and publish more CDs or books, thus REDUCING the amount of material potentially available and keeping the PRICES HIGH for those of us who do pay for them. That said, I would definitely criticize publishers who will not post indices to their books or CDs or, if queried, will not tell you in advance whether a name is in the book (or at least in the index). However, Broderbund is exemplary in this regard because there is an online index to their every CD, and you have 90 days to return a CD if it turns out not to be useful. What more could one ask? So should we stab Broderbund (and other publishers) in the back by broadcasting offers to do lookups on material that is still under copyright and easily available for purchase? In my opinion -- and, I believe, legally and emphatically -- no. Not without the written permission of the copyright holder. [Note that this is an entirely different issue from offering lookups on out-of-print, off-copyright works that may otherwise be difficult for researchers to obtain. I totally support lookups in such material.] <stepping down off soap box . . . ducking the tomatoes> -- Diana !^NavFont02F0FC00007NGHHVC28323 Maggie's World of Courthouse Dust & Genealogy Fever http://www.infinet.com/~dzimmerm/mindex.html *-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-* God Put Me On Earth to Accomplish a Certain Number of Things.
