------------------------------------------------------------------ FORWARDED MESSAGE - Orig: 28-Oct-98 23:07 Subject: Announcing Immigrant Ships Transcribers Site ------------------------------------------------------------------ This is to advise you that a new website is being developed by a group called THE IMMIGRANT SHIPS TRANSCRIBERS GUILD. This is a group of over 100 volunteers who have decided to transcribe NARA microfilmed passenger lists so that everyone on the internet can have free access to such lists. In addition, the GUILD is receiving donations of lists which have already been transcribed from people on the internet and from webmasters. The GUILD is also preparing links to many sites dealing with ships and passengers lists throughout the world. As of this date, there have been over 50 lists transcribed by volunteers, another 100 in the works, 100 lists donated to the site, and many sites agreeing to link their ships and sites. If you have a transcribed list you would like like to donate, you can contact Joan Rasanen, Resource Coordinator at Joaras@aol.com giving her the name of the ship, the ports of departure and arrival as well as the dates of each , and your e-mail address. http://iigs.rootsweb.com/immships/index1.html Thank you SUSAN SCOTT ==== Maggie_Ohio Mailing List ==== When you join the Maggie_Ohio Ohio Discussion/Mail List, you can share your research tips, get help from others and discuss ideas on research and resources for the state. !^NavFont02F04EE0007NGHHKF0DE99
------------------------------------------------------------------ FORWARDED MESSAGE - Orig: 28-Oct-98 23:38 Subject: GOOD NEWS!!!Hi ------------------------------------------------------------------ Hi Everybody, Noteworthy news: Washington, D.C. - An appropriations bill containing a Congressionally approved funding increase for the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) is on its way to the President. If the President signs the FY1999 Omnibus Appropriations Act, NARA will receive $224,614,000 for operating expenses in Fiscal Year 1999, plus $11,325,000 for facility repairs and restorations, and $10,000,000 for grants from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC), which NARA administers. Of these amounts, the Congress has specified that $7,861,000 of the operating funds and $4,000,000 of the grant funds may not be obligated until late in the fiscal year. NARA may be eligible to receive as much as $6,662,000 more from an appropriation to the Office of Management and Budget, in the same bill, for work converting computer programs to handle the change to the year 2000. In the new FY'99 bill, NARA would receive $11,586,500 more than in FY'98 in operating expense funds - $19,447,500 more counting the deferred appropriation, plus the possibility of the additional $6,662,000 for Year 2000 computer work. The NHPRC grant appropriation would be $4,500,000 more than in FY'98, $4,000,000 of which is earmarked for a directed grant to the Center for Jewish History, and $500,000 of which would be an increase for grants made through NHPRC's competitive program. And the appropriation in the FY'99 bill for facility repairs and restorations is the full amount requested. The increased appropriations will enable NARA to take additional steps toward preserving electronic records, improving government records management, expanding public access to records, launching a reimbursable records-center program, re-encasing the nation's Charters of Freedom on display in the rotunda of the original National Archives building, and beginning the design of the renovation of that building. "We desperately need these funds," said Archivist of the United States John Carlin. "They will help us help the government manage records better, cope with mushrooming quantities of them, and save what the public needs to document rights, hold officials accountable, and study our history. Everyone who understands that democracy depends on accurate, accessible records will be grateful to President Clinton for proposing, and the Congress for approving, a substantial increase for NARA's work." - (from an NARA Press Release 1998 October 21) ====================================================== Bob ==== Maggie_Ohio Mailing List ==== When you join the Maggie_Ohio Ohio Discussion/Mail List, you can share your research tips, get help from others and discuss ideas on research and resources for the state. !^NavFont02F09D90007NGHHPDBEFBC

Hi Loralee, I haven't forgotten you. I'm pretty sure that Olive & Wm. B. Ames are in the 1860 Berlin, Erie Co., OH census, but I still haven't dug out the papers. I believe that Olive went to Michigan with her son Jonathan. An informant has written: --"Jonathan Cook, according to what my father told me, served at some time in or around the war of 1812, possibly with New Hampshire state troops, or it may have been with the Federal army. After the death of Jonathan Cook's wife, Rebecca...at Aurora, New York, on September 11, 1834, Jonathan Cook remarried and after we had moved to Eagle Lake (in 1876), this second wife whose given name I do not know, wrote to my father and asked for such information as he could give her as to military service of his father, Jonathan Cook, which I think was in the early 1880's, that she wrote to my father"--Carrie M Cook Sower March 8, 1941------ She is talking about Olive Steadwell Burdue Cook Ames, who may have been with her son Jonathan Cook in Williamston, Ingham Co., MI after 1880. I have 4 families that came together in Erie & Huron Co., OH between 1820 and 1880. The BURDUE family was in Berlin at least by 1817 when Rebecca B. md Jacob Mingus. My interest is in Jacob Burdue who md Olive Steadwell in 1832 Huron Co., OH. died in 1835 and his family joined together to sue the young widow (b. 1814) to recover Jacob's land which was part of a family holding. Olive soon remarried Jonathan Cook (1835 Huron Co., OH) and he was added to the lawsuit. The Cooks moved on to Berrien Co., MI by 1839, but after Jonathan Cook died in 1841, Olive remarried to William B. Ames (1843, Erie Co., OH). They are found in 1850 in Berlin with 3 young Cook children and 3 more Ames babies. Olive STEADWELL was the dt of Abraham Steadwell and Rebecca Sheffield who came to the area by 1830. Since many of Olive's descendants were there at least until 1880, I would be interested in anything that is known about the following: CORYDON COOK b. abt 1837 Huron Co., OH, 1850 census Berlin, may be deaf, may have md Phebe J. GOBLE 1864 Huron Co., OH HARVEY COOK b. 5/15/1839 Berrien Co., MI, Co. K 1 USV Engineers GAR, md. MATILDA MILLER 1862 Huron Co., OH, She d. 1868 Huron Co., OH. Later moved to Wood Co., OH. JONATHAN COOK b. abt 1841 Berrien Co., MI md SADIE MILLER _______. Later lived in Williamston, Ingham Co., MI. CHARLES O. AMES b. 2/4/1845 Berlin, OH, went to Hancock Co., OH CLARK H. AMES b. abt 1846 md ANNA J. VOORHEES 1872 Huron Co., OH. Later went to Hancock Co., OH. WILLIAM H. AMES b. abt 1849 Berlin, OH ANNA AMES b. abt 1854 Berlin, OH BYRON H. AMES b. I have an old book published in 1916 of "The History of Erie County" Vol. 2 by Hewson L. Peeke. It is sort of a who's who of people in Erie County who were either big farmers, land owners, doctors or people in public office, etc... This book contains over 500 people and the articles on them are in depth and lenghtly. Most of the people are middle aged or older so that puts their birthdates around 1820s on. I do not know if this book has been republished and is available for research. It was given to my stepfather from his grandfather and only a certain amount of these books were distributed. If anyone is looking for a relation I would be glad to look them up for them. My e-mail address is: Brooke433@aol.com. Lisa

Hi All, Since this seemed to be a day of poetry on the mail group, I thought I might share this one with you all. For you genealogy addicts out there, I think you might relate to this: FAMILY I can't quite explain what started me to look for historical information on our Family Cooke But I asked many questions of my dad, that very day "Who are my relatives, what's the Family Bible say?" With eager pen and paper I started to write down All the names of ancestors that we had just found. So one hot day in August I turned on my PC to see what I could find on this Carolina family. Much to my surprise I found alot of Cookes all looking for their lineage in web pages and in books "Are you my cousin? Will you exchange with me? I think you are connected to the same family tree!" So I started posting on newsgroups and email and that is what lead me to find my cousin Dale Of all the things I've learned of my Cooke family line He is without a doubt my most treasured find. I never knew about him or he about me But now we search together and trace our genealogy We have found our ancestors on records and in graves And it makes us wonder How their life was in those days Their lives mean more to us than just a record of names Their memory is alive Their blood is in our veins We are happy to know them in this strange and distant way For without them ever living we would not be here today. by Roberta Cooke Schmidt Thanks for reading, hope you enjoyed it!
