I am constructing the history and genealogy of the 24th Ohio Infantry Regiment. My idealized focus is ambitious, recording each veteran's antebellum and post-war experiences, as well as their war service information. I need help tracking down the descendants of the 950 veterans. To aid you in determining whether you have a veteran in the unit, below is a list of counties where the companies were organized: (A) Huron (Norwalk) (B) Muskingum (C) Columbiana, Erie, Mahoning, & Ottawa (D) Adams (E) Montgomery (F) Trumbull (G) Huron (Monroeville area) (H) Cuyahoga (I) Highland (K) Coshocton To view the roster of volunteers from each county, use this web URL, and then click on the blue underlined county names: http://www.geocities.com/CapitolHill/Senate/1861 Please reply with a brief note concerning what you may know or have about each veteran. All persons who contact me will be noted in the upcoming book as sources of information for each veteran. Also, I will share what I know about the 24th Regiment. If you have any questions, please contact me, John Rutherford, at the following email address: ovi24th@hotmail.com I offer my sincere thanks for your help. "ANCESTORS" What's in a name? The talented poet asked. Look deep listen: The pulse of our ancestors. The heartbeat of nations past Land, Language, Faith. Look into a name. What do you see? Letters only? Look deeper. See the people Who lived that name. Not letters but flesh and blood. Flesh of our flesh. Blood of our blood. Faith of our faith. Ancestors. You who bore my name, Were your thoughts passed to me? Do I dream your dreams? The sun you saw I see. The moon plays for us both. Days are days. Years are years. But centuries separate us. You who lived centuries ago With my name. Did you see me then? You have not left this earth! You live in my name. You live in me. I give you earthly immortality. My eyes see a different land. My ears hear different sounds. But we worship in unison. The God of your youth. My faith you have given me. The God who watched over you Watches over me. Centuries collapse as Faith unites. Leave you, my ancestor? I could never leave you Without leaving myself. I take pride in you. The soil of your homeland Rests in my heart. Your native language Is the melody of your dreams. I look into your name And see myself. written by W.H. Zoschak (a Slovak) ==== GenHumor Mailing List ==== !^NavFont02F03E00007NGHHJE266AF

Leora I checked all of the cemeteries in Milan Twp. and found no Livengood - but remember this book only includes before 1909, which is when it was mandated that counties in Ohio register all deaths. I did however, find the following in Sand Hill Cemetery: WHEAT, Aggie, d. 2 DEC 1868, 2y, d/o George W. & Mary WHEAT. " , Arthur S., d. 21 NOV 1849, 9y, s/o Edwin & Betsey E. WHEAT. " , Betsey E., d. 21 APR 1849, 30y, w/o Edwin Wheat. " , Cora, d. 11 or 14 SEP 1868, 11m, d/p George W. & Mary WHEAT. " , Edwin, d. 21 JAN 1850, 53y, h/o Betsey E. WHEAT. " , George W, d. 1 JAN 1870, 31y, Veteran. " , Georgie, d. 31 JAN 1870, s/o George W. & Mary WHEAT. " , James M., d. 22 DEC 1864, 19y 7m 15d, Veteran. " , John D., b. 4 AUG 1836, d. 29 SEO 1893, Civil Wr, Co. G 101st Inf. " , Reuban K., d. 22 APR 1864, 23y. Don't know about what would be on a death certificate of the time, but it wouldn't surprise me if the parents who raised the person would be named as the parents of the deceased. You must keep in mind that the information on a death cert. is usually given during a time of great grief and often the informant is a child of the deceased. That child (or even a spouse) would only be able to give "hearsay" information about the deceased's birth. Who was the informant on her death certificate? Would they have first-hand knowledge about her birth, or only oral tradition? Carol

Hi Everyone, Some of you are receiving duplicates. Someone kindly sent me two messages with the top information intact and following is the answer I received. Also if you are subscribed to more than one of my lists you could receive duplicates that way. For example, if I get a query for Franklin County I post it to the Franklin County list and the Maggie_Ohio list. Your dups could simply be getting the same message from two lists. I can't quit doing it that way as I get answers from both lists and they each have their own audience. Hi Everyone, This came from my Maggie_Ohio list where recently we have had some adoption reunions that were helped along by the list. I asked Susan if she would create a list of information on just that and she sent me this. Maggie ------------------------------------------------------------------ FORWARDED MESSAGE - Orig: 1-Nov-98 19:54 Subject: ADOPTION SEARCH TIPS From: SUSANPI@aol.com ------------------------------------------------------------------ ADOPTIONS Miscellaneous Information 1. You must submit authorization to the county of the adoption. If your child/parent attempts to contact you. The county will give them your information. It is very IMPORTANT to keep this up dated. Most areas will allow you to write a letter and send a picture. Depending on the agency, they will often forward the letter to the last known address. If there is no information in your file they will abide by those strict privacy laws. 2. An adoptee usually must be 21 to receive and information on their adoptions. 3. Write the hospital where you gave birth /born do not mention being adopted, just state you want your records. You may luck out and get them, and a clue! 4. Ohio's vital statistic department is in Columbus. This is like a big secret:). You can set up an appointment to search the birth index. They will give you 3 hours to search. You ask for the birth index for the year you were born . You scan the entire year for your birth date, sex and county. Write down all dates and information that is similar. While you are there ask for the birth record/certificate. ( there is a form) If they come back and tell you there is no information available. It is likely an adoption. You will then have the mother's name and possibly the fathers. This is a major job and takes hours, they have 2 machines - but will only schedule you to one, BUT if no one else is there looking you can use both machines. So take someone with you. Also you may want to take eye drops. NOTE: Columbus has the original BIRTH INDEXthe birth index's in the library and other areas have been altered with the adopted parents listed. YOU MUST USE THE COLUMBUS BIRTH INDEX - The vital statistic department with not tell you that the original birth mothers name is on the index! 5. If you have your birth mother or fathers name - it is a lot easier:) 6. Never give up, you may have important information or clues, that will lead to the name or a connection ==== Maggie_Ohio Mailing List ==== !^NavFont02F07FB0007NGHHNFC31D0

------------------------------------------------------------------ FORWARDED MESSAGE - Orig: 1-Nov-98 11:30 Subject: [EDWARDS-NCVA] Fwd: [HANCOCK-L] Website sells your personal ------------------------------------------------------------------ This came from Dick Eastman's Online Genealogy Newsletter. I thought it has some interesting complications for those of us who are used to helping each other and are sometimes a little gullible about commercial sites. Jean Genealogy Web Site Sells Your Name and E-mail Address It's a tough world. Lots of businesses sell their customer lists these days. The result is that you get junk mail and marketing phone calls from all sorts of companies trying to sell you something you probably don't want. The newest twist is "spam mail", unwanted e-mails that advertise all sorts of junk. Now a well-known genealogy Web site is contributing to the spam mail that you receive and apparently is profiting from personal information that they obtain from you under the guise of helping you do genealogy research. In fact, the Web site apparently is a "front", as the main purpose seems to be gathering personal information about you and then selling that information. The Family Tree House Web site at http://www.usaafter.com claims that it is "the Association for FamilyTree Enrollment and Registry." The home page says, "This site offers free family tree software and links to key genealogy sites. The software is available on-line. You can build your FamilyTree House in real time, no downloading is required." They also say, "...you can create and register your own on-line FamilyTree. And because it is on-line, you can enlist the help of other family members by giving them your personal access code to allow them to fill in the missing branches--it's a project the whole family can participate in no matter where they live." On another page the site advises, "When requesting information, please make sure you include your name, mailing address and the information you would like." After they collect all the personal information from you and your other family members, the owners of Family Tree House apparently package the information and sell it to other companies that send junk mail or spam e-mails. On a different Web site, the owners of Family Tree House offer "a file of 33,600 last-12-month registrants of the Family Tree House, an association that offers Web site members free software and links to genealogy sites." The file they sell reportedly contains information about each person's date of birth, gender, e-mail address, state and ZIP code. The Web advertisement says that the file contains listings for 33,600 people who have left personal information on the Family Tree House site. He was wounded in the engagement, and unable to escape with the main portion of his comrades; he crawled into a fence corner for safety, where he was found by the British soldiers. He was taken before Colonel Prince who was asked what should be done with the prisoner, to which he replied. with the heartlessness of a fiend "Shoot him, damn him!" Poor Miller begged for time to write a few words to his wife before he was separated from her forever, but that favor was denied him. He then asked to be allowed in an interview with some friend, that he might send a vital message to his family; and even this was ruthlessly refused, While the platoon was being found for his destruction, a Mr. James, defying the ferocity of Prince, rushed to his side and received his last words for his wife. With but little delay, the soldiers were placed, and a volley of musketry told the last of Miller's earthly career. I will write the next part later. My daughter is here to take me to lunch.
