    1. Erie Co., death certificate
    2. Lori
    3. I just received a death certificate from Erie County and hope I can get some help on this. There were no parents listed but it did say John Forter was born in 1864 in Ca?tal?a Ohio and buried in Erie County Cemetery on or about 1/6/1925. Any help would be greatly appreciated! 1. Idea from another list
    2. Maggie Stewart-Zimmerman
    3. Hi You all! I saw this on another list as "ideas to stir the creative flow" and while I know we don't have a problem on this list with that I thought this might be fun. Following is the suggestion: "The BlackSheep_l uses "Scavenger Hunts" to stir up activity, A "Huntmistress" sets the subject, usually some member's Brickwall, and the entire list takes a shot at busting through. This usually lasts a week. Then the RECIPIENT lets the list know what was discovered. Also we have "Tell Us This Weekend" subjects that let the list members get to know each other a little better. Our last one. "What was the incident that hooked you into genealogy" and "Why do you still do it?"." What do you think of the idea? I personally think the brick wall thing would be fun to try out. Just post your ideas on the list and at the end of the week (next monday) the thing will be decided. Does anyone want to volunteer to count and collate the ideas? 3. Hi Everyone, There is a new thing going up in the USGenWeb Archives. These are online census images "actual pictures" that are donated. Following is the info from the top of the Master Table of Contents that is located at http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/cen_img.htm: The donation of the following list of Census images for permanent, free display in the USGenWeb Archives was made possible through the generosity of the donors [listed beside the link to their donation] and the permission of S-K Publications. These census images are copyrighted by S-K Publications and are not to be republished or redistributed without their permission. The images are also available on CD (in a higher-quality format that was reduced when they were converted to .GIF files for the Web) from S-K Publications, PO Box 8173, Wichita KS 67208-0173. 1. Wagon Roads (6)
    2. Maggie Stewart-Zimmerman
    3. I keep getting requests for this so here it is again. Maggie --------------------------------------------------------------------------- --- ------------ From: "Glenys J. Rasmussen" <glenys@sonic.net> Organization: Living Trees Research Subject: Re: [OHIO] Wagon Roads #6 To: OHIO-ROOTS-L@LISTSERV.INDIANA.EDU Thanks again to all who have passed along such nice comments. By the way, there is no #4 - I goofed on the numbers, sorry about that :-o Enter the Turnpike The wagon roads to the Ohio River from Georgia, the Carolinas, and Virginia all converged on the Wilderness Road through the Cumberland Gap into Kentucky, then up to the Ohio River. Using state money, the new state of KY upgraded the road through the Cumberland Gap to twelve feet wide in 1796. Other states were taking a different interest in their roads as well, particularly those roads which were being used for interstate travel. the concept of a state-owned "turnpike" came during this period, because the building and maintenance of a heavily traveled roadway was an expensive undertaking. And to pay for the roads, the states decided that "user fees" were in order. In the 1790's, the direct route across PA via Forbes' Road saw many Easterners moving west to Pittsburgh or Wheeling to reach the Ohio River. As the start of the main route to the west over Forbes' Road, beginning at Philadelphia, the Lancaster Pike was the name given to the first road built using some road building techniques borrowed from England. the route was virtually the same as the old "Lancaster Road" dating back to the 1720's; but the Lancaster Pike was significant not for the route, but for the quality of construction. Completed in 1796, the new road was financed under a right-of-way franchise granted by the State of PA to a private company. For a distance of some 70 miles, a three foot deep trench was dug, then filled with several layers of progressively smaller sizes of crushed rock, each layer tamped and packed solid. The inventor of this road was a Scotsman named Macadam, and the result was a "macadamized road". The Lancaster Pike was the first such road in America. The process is still being used. It has a final application of melted tar mixed with gravel to provide a paved surface. ... Water actually ran off the roadway, an unheard of event on any American road to that date. The Lancaster Pike was a hug success and became a profitable enterprise for the operators. Comfortable wayside inns soon catered to travelers all along the Pike, and regularly scheduled stagecoach service ran from Philadelphia to points West. Of course, travelers resented having to pay tolls for passage across the roadway, which was collected 'per head', including animals. But the speed and comfort one could travel on the Lancaster Pike by stagecoach or wagon was amazing and the all-weather surface was the showplace of highways. Stagecoaches pulled by six draft horses could maintain a consistent speed of 10-12 mph. This was a giant step forward in transportation, because the best travel time possible before this road was about 20 miles per day (walking speed). To trace the line of the old Lancaster Pike today, start as Philadelphia on US Hwy 30 and then take PA Hwy 340 into Lancaster.) Further north the route of the old Gesee Trail was to become the Mohawk Turnpike, the most important road for migrations across the state of New York. Following the valley formed by the Mohawk River, this road was continually improved due to the heavy demand of western migrations. By 1796, toll were collected at several points along the way from Albany to Utica and later all the way to Buffalo. this is the same path which in 1825 became the route of the famous Erie Canal and by 1850, the route of the New York Central Railroad. today it is the same general route as the NY Thruway (I-90). More to come ... -- >>Glenys Rasmussen<< http://www.sonic.net/~glenys/ >>"My home lies wide a thousand miles, In the Never-Never Land." (Henry Lawson)<< !^NavFont02F0D000006NGHHTH113A

    2. Tinda Marchant
    3. Hi, This may sound like the worlds dumbest question, but I need to be sure that I have not overlooked something before I go off into other areas (geographic) of research. FACT: It has been said that my Thomas J. BOWLES moved to Huron Co., Ohio in and about 1820, coming in from New York. Both of his children were reputed to have been born there, 1821 & 1822. Thomas is reputed to have died in 1849 in Huron Co., Ohio. The only verification I have is a cemetery record of him, having been buried in Berlin Heights Old Cemetery, Erie, Ohio. His son (#2 child) Thomas Jefferson Bowles shows up on the 1850 Berlin Twp., Erie, Ohio Census. PROBLEM: I have gone over the 1830 and 1840 Census' for Huron Co., Ohio three times and cannot find him (T.J.Bowles Sr.)anywhere. No I have not checked the 1820 Census...didn't see any point after not finding him on the other two. QUESTION: Can he have been in that county and missed being counted on two seperate consecutive Census'? Is this possible and if so isthere an explanation for this? I would appreciate any suggestions. Thank you, Regards, Tinda

    1. Re: Fw: Locating a person Patty LAY
    2. Carol A. Steele
    3. Wallace I knew Patty Lay about 20 years ago when I joined the Erie Co. Chapter of the Ohio Genealogy Society. She was one of the Charter Members and was also heavily into DAR. Unfortunately I have not seen her in several years. The last contact that I had with her was in 1985 when she sent condolences on the death of my Sister. I checked our local phonebook and she is not listed either under her own name or under Edward Lay, her husband. I believe she had no sons, only daughters, so none of the few Lays in the book would be the family. I do know that Ed died, and it would seem that Patty may have moved out of town to be near her daughters. She is one of the most sensitive, caring, wonderful women I have ever known. Since her husband was a lawyer, I will ask around and see if I can find out anything about her whereabouts. Carol Sandusky, Erie Co., OH

    3. Gary Do you have a copy of your father's birth certificate? How about the birth certificate for Ruth MEHLING. For either 1913 or 1934 they would be found at: Erie County Health Dept. 420 Superior St. Sandusky OH 44870 For George MEHLING's Birth Record check: Erie Co. Probate Court 323 Columbus Ave. Sandusky, OH 44870 Certified costs $7.00, but I think that uncertified copies are $1.00 each. There are still a few MEHLINGs in Sandusky. If you like, I will give you their snail mail address privately. Carol

    3. Hi Everyone, Apparently Rootsweb really experienced Friday the 13th. There was everything from duplicate messages to empty digests and problems accessing the listowner utilities. 1. RE: LEYDEN's of Sandusky
    2. Hi, I saw your response on OHERIE about look ups for the Sandusky Public Library. I was wondering if you had time to check on my family named Leyden? I am in Omaha Nebraska. I am trying to find information on two of my great uncles. One is John F. Leyden. Looking for a death or marriage record for him. His parents names were John and Anne Leyden (Lynch). I believe he died around 1930, drowned on Lake Erie in a bad storm. The next one is for Jessie Leyden (Wilder) born c. 1884 in Lee Cty Virginia. She married Martin Leyden in May 9, 1914 in Sandusky. Sandusky is listed as her residence. Her parents were David Wilder and Amy Roberts. I thank you for your time and help. I really appreciate it. Sincerely, Candace
