------------------------------------------------------------------ FORWARDED MESSAGE - Orig: 29-Nov-98 11:04 Subject: [NL] AOL bounces ------------------------------------------------------------------ Hi, folks -- In the last week or two, AOL users have been experiencing more trouble than usual delivering mail to RootsWeb. Apparently AOL's mail servers have been having difficulty establishing a connection to us, so AOLers (both listowners and regular subscribers) have been getting bounces that say "could not deliver mail for 3 days" when sending to RootsWeb. To fix this, I've set up a secondary mail server for RootsWeb. If AOL can't deliver mail to our primary mail server, it should automatically try to deliver to the secondary. Since the two servers live on totally different networks, the probability of being unable to deliver to *both* systems should be pretty low, so I think the problem will mostly go away. So, thanks for your bug reports, and let's see if this doesn't fix things for your subscribers. -- Regards, Tim Pierce RootsWeb Genealogical Data Cooperative system obfuscator and hack-of-all-trades ==== NEWBIE-LISTOWNER Mailing List ==== Visit USGENWEB for links to GENWEB pages and data archives for all states http://www.usgenweb.com/ !^NavFont02F04390007RGHHK3B6E5B

Hi Everyone, I have updated the Main pages yet again. There are two links on the state page that don't work but check out the rest at http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/oh/ohfiles.htm and let me know if something does not work. Also I have added a mailing list to share original Ohio source material... wills, deeds, bible records, tax lists, cemetery files, pension applications, obituaries, old letters, marriage lists, etc... with other Ohio researchers. There is a link there for that as well. This list allows NO queries at all! I am still trying to decide what to do on the Veterans page but my initial ideas are up there. I want to eventually get everything cross referenced with links to the county and the state page. Lastly, I have the first county done...Adams County at http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/oh/adams.htm so the coordinator or interested parties can go and check it out. Gary, I'm looking into that very question for you I'm going to the library tomorrow to research. I hope to come up with some answers. Laura
This message is for all who may be interested. Since I have received several inquiries about these units, it is my honor to reply with this overview. During the American Civil War, the Ohio National Guard regiments were originally part of Ohio Governor William Dennison's "Militia of the Reserve" plan, whereby citizens statewide would have militia training in case of emergencies. Most of these Militia of the Reserve units expressly asked to be enrolled as Home Guards, so that they would serve only within the state. However, Ohio Governor John Brough made a new wrinkle in this militia training plan. The U. S. War Department pressured states to put more troops in the field in early 1864. Governor Brough responded on April 25, 1864, by declaring all Home Guard units the "Ohio National Guard" and activated various units around the state of Ohio by companies or by battalions and regiments for 100 days of service unless sooner discharged. This was certainly a surprise to most militia units around the state (and draws immediate parallels of Vietnam and Desert Storm National Guard units). Thus, the Ohio National Guard was born.... A typical Ohio National Guard unit was the 166th Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment, also called the 166th O.N.G. It was organized at Camp Taylor in Cleveland, and arrived at Washington, D.C in late May, 1864. The regiment was broken up by companies to man the various forts around the nation's Capital. The unit was forced to grueling duty when Confederate General Jubal Early and his veterans made a raid toward Washington in July 1864. Most of the soldiers were kept on alert for anywhere from six to eight days in a row until Early's army retreated back into Virginia. The 166th O.N.G. did not take part in a major battle from what I can see in Whitelaw Reid's "Ohio in the War" v.2, p.696. But these veterans can be proud that they helped save Washington, D.C., from capture. John C. Rutherford _________________________________________________________ DO YOU YAHOO!? I have searched everywhere looking for information on the Steele families that resided in Huron Village listed in the1850 census. Our direct ancestor is Samuel Steele. He and his brothers Otis & Charles are listed as part of the ? (I can't read the last name-HELP) family. The mother's name is Mary and she also had a son John. It is my belief that she had remarried. The other Steele families on the adjoining land were from NY. Mary was from Germany. Does anyone have any ideas - I am at deadend now. Samuel eventually ended up in Rushsylvania, Logan Co, Ohio. Open to any suggestions or help. Thanks so much Kathy Cuthbert

Does Erie County have coroner's inquest records for 1879? My G Grandfather, John Reifert was killed by the St. Louis express 15 Nov, 1879 about one mile west of Vermilion, OH on the tracks of the Lake Shore and Michigan Southern Railroad. I would assume they had a coroner's inquest for the accident. Thanks, William Reifert Lawson, MO
------------------------------------------------------------------ FORWARDED MESSAGE - Orig: 23-Nov-98 4:57 Subject: [Fwd: IGI details] From: Don Furnish donlfurnish@copper.net ------------------------------------------------------------------ The IGI, as you say is an Index and a very good guide line, and always pays to verify the entry. On the IGI record and if you are using the CD-ROM the entry will also show (a)...a Batch Film number, be it an extraction from a parish film which has a letter in front c (christening extract) m(marriage extract), p (extract from a parish film). Sometimes there will be a 7 digit number which is an LDS temple film, some can be ordered through the LDS Family History centre such as Baptism of the Dead/Endowment of the Dead. Some 7 digit numbers are Temple films and not available on film at a FHC, sometimes the 7 digit numbers are followed by 2 or 3 numbers and mostly these are patron sheet submissions. It always pays to check these film numbers in the Computer which will verify what temple film it is. (b) scource call number...that is the film number which is always alngside the Batch Film number. Checking your IGI entries on the CD-ROM, will enable you to further your research by ordering the appropriate film if available. I am sure the Librarian at the FHC will help If by chance the IGI has been viewed on the microfiche, only Batch film numbers are shown and 7 digit numbers. On the IGI it always states where the event took place..so once again at the FHC, look in the Loclaity catalogue in the country/County/parish (that is shown on the IGI) and see what records are available for that parish, it also pays to look at the County records and see what is available. Some Family History Centres have the Imperial Gazetteer on microfiche and look up the town/parish/hamlet on this gazetteer, you would be amazed at what information there is! Also look up the town/parish in the Phillimores Parish Atlas, so you know its situation in the County. Trusting this helps! Good wishes...Prinia, Motueka, New Zealand !^NavFont02F06BA0007RGHHMBCBA07
