Debbie There was a prominent MILLS family in Sandusky. W. H. MILLS owned a large amount of land on Sandusky's west side. In the early 1840s he donated land, stone, timber and money to build Sandusky's first Catholic Church - Holy Angels. This is my parish and Mr. MILLS is mentioned in all accounts of the founding of Holy Angels, but I don't know much more about the MILLS. I am sure that he should have been included in all historical accounts of early Sandusky, so research on him could be quite easy. There was also a Fanny MILLS who was know world wide for her huge feet. She suffered from elaphantitis and toured the world because of her deformity. If you could find a connection to either of these people, then research on your Thomas & John MILLS might be easy. I checked the 1880 Erie County Ohio Census index and did not find either of your names. Good luck! Carol
Hi All, If you visit the Erie County Archives site at http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/oh/erie/erie.htm but you have trouble accessing the files, please be patient and retry, since the FTP server may be experiencing difficulties. Or, retrying during off-peak hours should bring success. But it still may take several attempts. Please report any other problems to me at tedohio@yahoo.com Anyone with Florence Twp. or Vermilion Twp. connections: feel free to contact me for more info about these pioneers. I cannot be of much help with other areas of the County, though. Thanks, Ted tedohio@yahoo.com

Hi, I thought I would pass this one one. Maggie ------------------------------------------------------------------ FORWARDED MESSAGE - Orig: 17-Jan-99 0:08 Subject: [OHIO] New Railroad Map Site..... From: Pam Rietsch prietsch@ISMI.NET ------------------------------------------------------------------ Hi All, Well just to distract me from the diversion of physical therapy I decided to put up another map site, must be crazy <grin>...anyway this one still has tons to go but the R.R. maps that are up are pretty cool. There are about 20 of them covering all parts of the country. They are taken from an 1891 Grain Dealers and Shippers Gazetteer I got recently from an old book dealer and thought this might help people. Again, these are rather large images, so take your time, drink your beverage of choice and enjoy. http://www.LivGenMI.com/1891shippersgaz.htm Pam prietsch@ismi.net Have YOU supported Rootsweb lately? Gore Orphanage did exist. IT was on Gore Orphanage Rd. down the road from where the boyscout camp is now. There was a fire in the orphanage and several died. Legend has it that on the nights of the full moon you can go to the spot where the orphanage was and still hear the cries of the children. -----Original Message----- From: SShock6038@aol.com <SShock6038@aol.com> To: OHERIE-L@rootsweb.com <OHERIE-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Saturday, January 16, 1999 9:07 PM Subject: Gore Orphanage >Hello! > >Does anyone know anything about the history of Gore Orphanage which was >located on Gore Orphanage Road in Vermilion, Ohio? Sorry, I don't have any information on a Thomas Mills. Good luck in your search.
Hi Earl - Your email is bouncing. Are you still there? If so, what is your correct email address? Carole
Just a note about the "legend" of Gore Orphanage: the orphanage had been long closed, just a vacatant building, when it burned. No one died in the fire. You will find more info about the orphanage in Lorain County (Brownhelm Twp.). Also, an article about it was printed in the Cleveland Plain Dealer last year (it may have been around halloween).
<< GORE ORPHANGE WAS A ORPHANGE THAT CAUGHT FRE APPARENTLY WITH ALL THE CHILDREN INSIDE. NOW ALL THAT IS LEFT IS A PART OF THE SLAB THAT WAS LEFT AFTER THE FIRE. >> This story sounds remarkably similar to that of a nursing home between Norwalk and Fitchville on Rte. 250 in Huron County. It caught fire and burned to the ground with many of the residents still inside. This happened about 30 years ago. For many years all that remained was the concrete slab floor. I think even that is gone now. If I remember correctly, the area may have been turned into a camping area, or a mobile home park, or something like that. I haven't been up that way in quite some time. We always went past there when going to visit my grandparents in Milan. Nothing earth shattering. Just fun facts to know and tell. Hello, I know this is a long shot but I've hit a frustrating dead end. I'm looking for info on THOMAS MILLS born in Erie county about 1808 - his father was John Mills. Thomas MILLS was in Kentucky by 1843. If you have any info or possible leads they would be appreciated. Thanks in advance Debbie jjure@aol.com
