I belong to several lists and this "ad is on them, one she "charges" your $5.00 for the information and on another list she dosen't. If it is a Freedom of Information Act why pay for it? It's her way to make a big buck, she won't get it from me. I'm sorry, but this sure sounds like an advertisement. If a person is willing to do the work, much of this info is available on microfilm which can be ordered through the LDS Family History Center. You don't need to know "legal lingo" or use the Freedom of Information Act. There are local and county records which have been gathered through the years by the LDS. I've got wills, estate records, marriage, death and adoption records, on ancestors, plus much more. Just find a Family History Center near you, and you will be surprised at the wealth of information they have. Penny

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/1VB.2ACE/11349 Message Board Post: Dear fellow researchers: In my professional work I use the FOIA to acquire records from all areas. While you cannot just send in a generic "find this" request, using the proper request the proper forms and properly worded legal letter will result in the documentation you are seeking. I received 84 pages the first time and two weeks later received an additional 124 pages of documentation. These records went back to 1838. It was a godsend! I will spell this out exactly to anyone who wishes direction and send you the form, the request letter, what you need to send them in terms of specifics, if you have them, or if not, where and how to find them. This is what the Freedom of Information Act is for! But you have to know how and where to use it. The FOIA is available for use in any state for any public record. It does not, not replace the researcher, but for those of us who have been unable to physically get to an out of town location or to contact an active researcher it's! great. As a result of my request I have my gggrandfather's entire household inventory down to every single knife and fork, I have his entire office contents down to the list of law books and furniture he owned, I have the guardianship papers for all of my ggrand uncles and aunts, I have a (long) list of people that owed him money for mortgages he held and how much, when they were due - it was like a treasure chest. I know how much he paid for a loaf of bread, how much of an allowance the Estate had my gggrandmother on for the next 5 years! And all because I knew how to ask the right way. Again, this is just one tool. I am preparing a "package" to email those who are interested. My email is [email protected] The response has been rather large, it's going to take me a few days, possible until the weekend. I am requesting a donation of $5 per person requesting the package. I will send the package first work on the honor system for the $5.00. I will be glad to help! anyone with any additional information or reformatting the forms for other states, other data requests, etc. for free. This is just taking me a LOT of time. I will email all the details with the forms, etc. In the meantime, start searching for as many specifics as you can get. This is not "send me the death certificate of...." This is "I searched the probate database for (county) and found that my ggrandfather's estate is in your records. It is between the years XXXX and XXXX." Then there is more legal lingo, etc. etc.. Anyway, I am sorry this post is so long, I will be sending this out to all interested sometime this week or weekend. Also, please advise anyone else you think may be interested in this information in other lists. Thanks! Kathleen Lawler

I find two sources for info on the name WOBSER. None for WOBSTER. The first one is Family Tree Maker's Passenger and Immigration Lists INDEX, 1538-1940 #354. Albert Wobser age 20 immigrated, 1861, leaving from Bremen. Arriving N.Y. Along with him was a female named CAROLINE WOBSTER aged 49. Shown as a relative not wife or sister. I can give you the source for this info if you like. Second is the book"Sandusky Then and Now." Page 153 states that WOBSTER, ALBERT, born in Pobrow, District of Rommelsburg, Pomerania: joined the 6th Pomeranian Infantry Reg.#49:siege of Paris, discharged 1872. September-----. Distinguished service award 1870-1. WOBSTER, HERMAN, born(same place) entered service in 1878 in the 8th Pomeranian Inf. Reg. # 61 in Thoren, discharged 1881. Some entries will provoke a chuckle, others a bit of embarrassment, still others a sense of wonder and pride. My great grandfather's name was Emil Wobser (died in 1929 or 1931 - can't recall which). His father was Albert Wobser (born 24 January 1852 in Hinter Pommern Germany - now Poland). His father was Albert Wobser Sr, also born in Hinter Pommern on 6 June 1823. We know he was a farmer... His father was Martin Wobser - although we do not have a date of his birth. I cannot locate anything on a Charles, and how he fits in - but all of them being buried in Venice Cemetery, there is definitely a connection. I believe that a few of the Wobser's (a father, son and brother) came here together - but I'd have to check into that - as I believe we have the info. My wife is actually the one who did all the research, even though it's my family! :) You'll be interested in the origin of the name. In a book (Deutsches Namenlexikon) by Hans Bahlow, recently translated from the German into English by Edda Gentry under the title Dictionary of German Names, it states the following: Wobeser: Place name in Pommern. Note the slight spelling difference, but it is obvious that the name of the family is derived from where they were originally from. Regarding the Bahlow book - it is ESSENTIAL for anyone with German ancestry to own the book. It's available from Amazon.com - it's 580 pages long and has over 15000 entries of German names! Anyway, hope that helps a bit - if you find any other info, it'd be great to know, as there are gaps in our Wobser history as well... All the best, Larry Camp
