I have been trying to locate descendants of the Third OHio Volunteer Cavalry regiment as I myself am a descendant. I have located a group picture of the regiment when it held a reunion on August 22, 1889. I also am a member of the Third Ohio Volunteer Cavalry Descendants Association. We are a group that has as its main goal to keep the memory of the Third alive and well in the state of Ohio for historical purposes for future generations. These men met every year after the Civil War until 1915. They were a group who were a "family," and, believe it or not, the group is becoming a united family. We want to preserve any record, photographs, etc. of the members of the Third. I am very glad that I have found someone else. Finding descendants is very difficult. We are having a meeting on December 14 at 1:00 PM at Firelands Museum in Norwalk, OH. You are welcome to come and bring family. There is a Third Ohio VC website also. These guys were not mere "horse soldiers." They were special. Thank you. Jan

    3. Sandy When Erie County was established in 1838, Kelley's Island was in Ottawa County. Not sure exactly when it happened but Ottawa Co traded Kelley's Island for the Marblehead Penninsula around 1840, so you might want to check the census for 1840 Ottawa County. 2. Sandy
    3. Hello I have been researching my New York SCOTT family who show up in Wisconsin 1860. I have Horace M. SCOTT for 1830 and 1840 in Oneida County, New York and in 1860 in Rock Co., WI and 1870 Dane Co., Wisconsin. I lose him for 1850......20 yrs a HUGE Gap. When searching the USGenWeb Archives I noticed a Horace SCOTT shows up on the tax list there in 1842. Looking at a map, I notice that Kelleys Island would be located in between New York and Wisconsin, okay my geography is not good. I did check for 1840 census on Kelleys Island, when did census start for Kelleys Island? I have always had a suspicion, not sure why, that they headed for Ohio, before settling in WI. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. -- Thanks, Sandy County Coordinator for: http://www.geocities.com/scarletgen/index.html Grant County, WI Biographies~Part of Wisconsin Biographies My other website: http://www.rootssearch.net/mygensite/sscarletgen/ Searching for the Ancestry of John ATTEBERRY __________________________________________________________________ The NEW Netscape 7.0 browser is now available. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/1VB.2ACE/11347.1.1 Message Board Post: Kristi & Kathi Marriage records are indeed in Probate Court, however Divorce Records are in the Clerk of Courts. Early (pre 1977 or so) Divorces are recorded in the same books as Criminal & Civil Records, so it is not that easy to look up. The best way to check for a Divorce is to go in person (or send someone). These records are public and the Clerks there will be happy to show you how to research. It takes some time, so come prepared to spend time reading the handwritten indexes. The Clerk of Courts continued to hand write the indexes until 2000 when they finally got their first computer system. After locating the name in the index, you will find the Case number. With that Case number, you will be directed to the file, microfilm, or the oldest files to find the case you want. Remember though that it could be a criminal, civil or domestic action - no way to tell until you look at the actual case. If you cannot go in person, you can write, however there is little time for the Clerks to do research. Remember their first duty is to the current cases - and they set new records every year!

In our library there are probate court death records from 1838-1913 on microfiche. However, they are mostly hand written and very hard to read. I've tried to find info in them and given up in frustration. Here's a couple of places to try: Birth and Death Certificates before 1908: Probate Court, 323 Columbus Avenue, Sandusky, Ohio 44870. Phone: 419-627-7750. Birth and Death Certificates after 1908: Erie Co Health Dept, 420 Superior Street, Sandusky, Ohio 44870. Phone: 419-626-5623. I'm pretty sure marriage/divorce records are available through the probate court too. Good luck to you. Kathi Meyers
