I am a past tent president of Tent in Fostoria, and now am in the process of insitituting a Tent in Fremont, OH. There is a genuine interest in this organization once again. I hope this stays. I am also on the council for the Department of Ohio and on the District Level I am the Patriotic Instructor. I appreciate your interest. Are you interested in the Sons of Union Veterans? There is a Camp in the Toledo area. Is your wife interested in the DUVCW? We are open to new members of lineal descent. About your gggrandmother's ribbons. What Tent did she belong to in Erie County? I am very much interested in the history of the DUVCW as well. I would very much like to see her ribbons. Is is possible to scan them and send me a picture? If you would care to, these ribbons would probably be of interest of the DUVCW National museum in Springfield, IL. Please keep me posted as to what you would like to do with these ribbons. Also, the Erie County historical society would probably be very happy to have them added to their displays as on loan from your family. Thank you for your interest. Hope to hear from you again soon. Try the variations of the spelling: Higney, Hegney, Heagney and Hageny. You'll find the name of the same people spelled differently in the different census returns and even by members of the family. My ggg grandfather Edward Hegney came to America from County Tyrone around the late 1830s, and your Mary may well be a relative. Edward was born in 1810 and was naturalized in Sandusky in March 1844. The naturalization papers spell his name as "Edward Higney". I know nothing definite of Edward's family, except for his wife and children. But there was another male Hegney in Erie County who might have been a younger brother or nephew. Took me a long time to find the family in one census, since whoever did the index had completely misread the last name! (Some indexers should be shot for the ridiculous misreadings they come up with.) My gg grandmother was Mary Elizabeth Hegney -- the family settled eventually on the Hegney spelling. Thus Mary could have been a family name, though it is hardly uncommon among Irish Catholics.

My ggg grandfather Edward Hegney/Higney/Heagney was naturalized in Sandusky in 1844. He was born in County Tyrone, Ireland in 1810. I'm wondering if the naturalization papers would have a complete birthdate and the town he was from. Hopefully, these papers do still exist!

My great grandmother belonged and I've got her membership badges. Pretty things and they have aged beautifully. (She was in Erie County, too.) Like the UDC, the DUV was organized largely to help take care of the aging veterans. When the old boys were all gone, both the DUV and UDC dropped greatly in membership. Same things happened to the sons' groups. (I had folks on both sides.)
