He was Joseph Wymer born 1861 in Wood Co. OH. His father's name was Adam Wiemer and mother, Jane. Adam was born in OH, and his family came from PA. Adam spelled his name Wiemer/ Joseph wrote his last name as Wymore when he married my g grandmother in 1885 in Clare Co. MI, and when he died his last name was spelled Wymer, which is how his children always spelled theirs. I think Joseph's father, Adam, had a brother named Joseph and Adam signed for him when he got married. My g grandfather came to MI in 1885 with an Adam who was around my grandfather's age (brother or cousin??) and they did logging together. Would appreciate any information possible.

    3. Anna, Paul and other Erie County Searchers Volumes 1 - 20 of the Common Pleas Court Records are in the Center for Archival Collections at BGSU. All info must be requested from them as the Clerk no longer has these records. You can access them through their website. I don't have it handy, but just search for Bowling Green State University website and there is a link there for the CAC. If you email the Archivist give the person's name and the Volume & page numbers and he will send copies to you along with a bill for the cost, which is minimal. Be sure to include your residence address. Carol --- [This E-mail scanned for viruses by LRBCG.COM, Inc.]

    3. Hi Anna, Here is a reference to Valentine Fries form Charles Frohman's book Milan & the Milan Canal: "Valentine Fries was born in Germany, January 9, 1826, and came to Milan in 1848, establishing a grocery which he operated for twenty years, but he also became interested in other ventures, including shipbuilding. Even after the canal was abandoned, he continued building several ships at Fries Landing, which was named for him. His later ventures were the lumber business in Huron, and mercantile and banking interests in Cleveland and Huron. He died April 2. 1900." Ships listed in the same book as having been built by him are: Hyphen- Apr. 25, 1861 Wm. Raynor- May 5, 1862 Wm. Shupe- July 30, 1862 Atmosphere- Sep. 27, 1863 Amaranth- Apr. 17, 1864 Mystic- 1866 Exile- 1867 Also, in the Milan and Milan Twp. bicentennial booklet (1976), prints of the Hyphen & Amaranth are reproduced (though black & white only.) You might try the Milan Historical Museum for more information. They have a nice website, through which you can contact them. 3. I am looking for information on Valentine Fries, a shipbuilder in Milan. He lived there from about 1845 to 1900 when he died. According to his obituary and other information I have gathered, he was a wealthy and prominent citizen of Milan, but I cannot find any mention of him in the censuses nor other family members (surname Paul) who were alleged to have come to MIlan to work in his various enterprises. How could a man of his stature escape the census? Is there somewhere I can write to request the list of land transactions during the late 1800s to ascertain his whereabouts that way? Thank you. anna
