Donna: You indicate that Martin Minor was married to Stella Harper and then to Elizabeth Heylman. I think he may have married a Susan somewhere between those years. Here is the information I located in the book, Erie County Ohio Cemetery Census Before 1909: Oakland Cemetery Edgar Miner d. 25 July 1855, 1yr 67 mo 13 d c/o M F & Susan N Miner Hunter Miner d. 19 July 1855, 3 yrs 4 mo 19 d c/o M F & Susan N Miner Stella Miner d. 7 Jan 1847, 28 yrs 8 mo 2 d w/o M F Miner Susan N Miner d 1854 35 yrs I checked the records for all the Sandusky Cemeteries, Oakland, St Joseph's and St Mary's and Perkins Cemetery in Perkins Township and did not locate a Dr Robert Austin. You said you are seeking to locate Martin F Minor in 1860- 1870 in Sandusky. What information are you seeking? Let me know and I will try and research for you. jb Janis Burke Sandusky, Erie Co, OH Erie County Chapter, OGs --- [This E-mail scanned for viruses by LRBCG.COM, Inc.]
Sharon: Perhaps there are articles about this murder/trial in the old Sandusky newspapers during the period 1874 & 1880. I will check it out when I go to the library this week. I'm not sure if I will be going to the Court House but if I do, I will check with the courts to see where I would start to research the trial. jb Janis Burke Sandusky, Erie Co, OH Erie County Chapter, OGS --- [This E-mail scanned for viruses by LRBCG.COM, Inc.]

Dr. Robert Aaron Austin died 13 Aug 1878 in Sandusky. He was married to Anne H. Harper. Following the death of Dr. Austin, Anne moved back to Harpersfield, Ashtabula Co., Ohio. Thank you. Donna
My gt gt grandfather, William Peter Turpin, owned a nice farm in Venice, Ohio. A picture of the farm was on page 46 of the 1874 Erie County Atlas. Six years later in 1880 on the Ohio (Erie County) Census he is living with his daughter and son-in-law, Alice and Benjamin Bailey. He went to Kansas and homesteaded a while but returned and was a laborer on the 1900 Census for Ottawa County in Pt. Clinton, Ohio. I always wondered what happened. Why did he leave his prosperous farm? Turns out he had a confrontation with a timber thief and shot and killed him. He was acquitted at trial in Sandusky, Ohio. Does anyone have any info on this man? How can I find out about this trial? Would the courthouse have a "murder trial index"? Would the library be a better choice? Any advice would be appreciated. Sharon in AZ

I'm sorry to post this to the list but hope someone can help solve this mystery. I posted a query on this list and Laura responded that she would do some lookups for me. Screen name: [email protected] She said she was many connections in Sandusky to places few researchers are allowed to go. She said she does lookups as a volunteer and only asks for folks to let her know they received the information and to say thanks you. Then she hinted for money, which I sent, and she sent a few obituaries and said the birth, death and marriage certificates would arrive soon. What did arrive soon was an email saying she had changed her email address to: [email protected] I was online at the time and responded immediately to both addresses and she did not answer or read either of them for several weeks. Finally she said she was tutoring a child and had less time to do research. I have not heard from her since nor does she read my emails. (On AOL you can check to see the mail status.) I am hoping for a simple explanation. Is she sick? Problems in the family? or ??? I have written and ask for most of my money back or for her to do the research she promised but she doesn't read the messages. Does anyone there know her or have a valid explanation, before I proceed? Please contact me off list so that this doesn't become a bigger mess. Thanks, Sharon in So. CA
Suzann While I know of no catastrophe that caused loss of records here in Erie County, I do know that Probate Court trashed all the old Will Packets about 15 years ago. Carol --- [This E-mail scanned for viruses by LRBCG.COM, Inc.]

I have just learned that my 2nd gt gfather, William Peter Turpin, a prosperous farmer in Venice was arrested for murder when he had a run-in with a timber thief whom he shot and killed. He was acquited at trial in Sandusky. This probably happened 1874-1880. In 1874 a picture of his farm was shown in the 1874 Atlas of Erie County. Would I contact the Erie County Courthouse? The newspaper? I'm kind of at a standstill here. I'd sure appreciate any help or suggestions. Thanks, Sharon in AZ
Hello, everyone: I am currently working to compile a list of destroyed courthouses in Ohio. Destruction usually occurred through fire, but some were destroyed by other means as well. I haven't found any records of such disasters in Erie County. Am I correct, or can anyone provide information about any catastrophes that destroyed genealogically valuable records in Erie County? Thanks, Suzann :)
Thanks Carol, that was very informative, and I have sent for the records of Holy Angels Church on microfilm. My relative, Mary Fennessey, was born in Venice, OH in 1850/1851 and Venice is west of Sandusky, so maybe I will get lucky. Bill O'Loughlin

JoAnn, Bill, and Janis To add to your information on the Sandusky Catholic Churches: St Mary's was established as a German church. You HAD to be of German descent to belong. My Mother belonged but changed over to Holy Angels when she married Dad, who was a member of Holy Angels. She would never be allowed to rejoin St Mary's. However I could have if I desired to. It was in the very early 1840's that the large influx of German Catholics petitioned the Bishop for a church of their own. They did continue to worship at Holy Angel's until their own small church was erected on the southeast corner of Decatur & Jefferson Streets in 1854. The present St Mary's Church took from 1873-1880 to build. Holy Angels & Sts Peter & Pauls were not "ethnic" churches and the city was divided with Shelby St as the dividing line. Those living west of Shelby went to Holy Angels, and those on the east to Sts Peter & Paul's. That is why even though the first 25 years of my life were lived in about a 12 block area, I was baptized at Holy Angel's, First Confession, Cummunion, & Confirmation at St P & P, 8th Grade graduation, marriage & out 1st child baptized at HA, next two children baptized at St P & P, etc. The dividing line was much ignored in the 1970's and finally abolished sometime in the 1980's or so. In reference to churches located in Sandusky, Erie Co. There were/are two that I know of, Sts Peter and Paul Parish, 510 Columbus St. Sandusky and Church of The Holy Angels Tiffin St. Sandusky, Ohio. My g. grandfather was Irish and settled in Margaretta Twshp along with his wife and her family who also were Irish. My G. G grandfather was a shoemaker and my g. grandfather a laborer. All born in Ireland. Services were begun in Jan 01,1840 at Church of The Holy Angels. In 1871 Holy Angels was closed and Sts Peter and Paul was opened. In 1875 Holy angels re-opened. Hope this gives you some help. Info from church secretary. JoAnn in Virginia

If it is Sandusky, I can research the Probate Court records and > also the obits at the library. > Hello Janis: Thank you very much for the information on the Stuckey family. Thus far I have only found an obit for Magdalena Schied Stuckey in the Sandusky Register, April 23, 1915. It reads: "Mrs. Magdalena Stuckey, wife of the late Jacob Stuckey, died at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. George Linder, 1882 Monroe St., Thursday morning at 4 o'clock, aged 80 years, six months and six days. She is survived by her two daughters, Mrs. Linder and Mrs. Philip Rey and one son, Joseph Stuckey, seven grandchildren, and five great children. She had resided in Sandusky for the past 64 years." The same appears in the Sandusky Register of April 24, 1915, with the addition of: "Funeral services Saturday from the residence at 8:15 a.m., and at 9 a.m. at St. Mary's church, the Rev. Father J.S. Widmann officiating. Interment in St. Mary's cemetery." I have copies of some of the burial cards from St. Mary's cemetery. Jacob died February 22, 1895, age 64. There is a headstone. Frank died May 17, 1900, age 68, and has a Civil War headstone. His wife, Sophia, died October 9, 1900, age 64; no headstone for her. There is a total of 16 Stuckey family members buried in St. Mary's cemetery, but I haven't as yet determined how (or if) they are all related. Paul C. Miller
