    1. Re: [OHErie] Valentine Fries
    2. Dear Anna, I found him on the 1880 Milan Township census index. It only lists heads of households. Page 111B, family number 150. He is listed with a Jacob Kramer and Clarissa Shupe. Here is a little blurb from Hewson Peeke's 1916 History of Erie County, page 94: "Amont the first and last of the ship builders was Valentine Fries, a self-made man, who came to Milan about the year 1849 and began the grocery business in a small way. Careful attention to business and steady, hard work, together with the strictest integrity, gave Mr. Fries the necessary means to enlarge his business, and to invest a limited amount of money in vessel property. The time was opportune, and he soon increased his marine investments. In the '70s and '80s he built, at Fries' Landing (formerly called Wards and Abbotts), several of the largest and finest sailing vessels on the lakes, including the Marion Page, the Golden Age and others. He also built the steam barge Charles Foster. As a trustee of the township he was very active in bringing about the graveling of the flats north of Milan, an improvement that has been a very great benefit to farmers on that side of the town because the roads prior to this were next to impassable for several weeks every spring and fall." This may also be of interest. I have a 1940 Erie County Rural Directory. There is a Valentine A. Fries listed. He lived in Huron Township, but had land in Berlin Twp. He held 100 acres valued at $9,480. Hope this helps a little. 1. Re: [OHErie] Theresa Heinrich Ruemmele Dewaldt
    2. Dear Elizabeth, A bit of interesting information from Hewson Peeke's 1916 History of Erie County, page 415: "In April 1851, August Ruemmele and Herman Ruess began the publication of the first German newspaper published in the county, called the Intelligente Blatt. It ceased publication in 1854. The Bay Stadt Demokrat was the next German paper and was established in 1856 by Louis Traub. In 1873 it was purchased by William Senn and appeared under the name of the Sandusky Demokrat by which name it has ever since been known. It is now the only German paper in the county. It is now published by William Ruemmele and has a strong influence among the German element." Sorry, can't find any info on Heinrich and Dewaldt families. Jacob Vogt is listed on the 1880 Kelley's Island census index. VOGT, Jacob o.p.17; n.p.75A --- o.p. means old page number, n.p. means new page number. Wish I could find more. Good luck! I thought Kelley's Island might be included with the Sandusky city directories, but I haven't found any mention of it in the Sandusky directories, unless I missed it completely. LDS has nothing for Kelley's except cemetery data. If anyone has any information, I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you! Paul C. Miller

    1. Re: [OHErie]death certificates
    2. Amy Johnson Crow
    3. Recently, the Ohio House of Representatives passed House Bill 95 (the state budget bill). Included in sections 3705.23 and 3705.24 is language that would: -- eliminate uncertified copies of vital records -- add a $5 surcharge to what is already charged for a certified copy (raising the total cost of a single document to anywhere between $12 and $17, depending on the agency) -- creates a "certification of birth," which does not require the parents' names to be listed In addition, the certified copy is not required to be a photocopy of the record. Unlike other states where the threat to vital records access is based on fears about identity theft and homeland security, the Ohio legislature is doing this under the guise of "fiscal responsibility." Although nobody has been able to get someone to speak on the record, my sources at the Ohio Historical Society tell me that they have heard from the State Vital Statistics officials, who say that they cannot afford to process uncertified copies. (Because the way the open records law is written, agencies must charge "at cost," which cannot include the cost of labor or any overhead, such as maintenance and preservation of the record.) Ohio has had a long tradition of open records. The Ohio Revised Code section 149.43 requires that "...all public records shall be promptly prepared and made available for inspection to any person at all reasonable times during regular business hours. Subject to division (B)(4) of this section, upon request, a public office or person responsible for public records shall make copies available at cost, within a reasonable period of time. In order to facilitate broader access to public records, public offices shall maintain public records in a manner that they can be made available for inspection in accordance with this division." House Bill 95 does not exclude vital records from what are defined as public records. There are many other ways to keep uncertified photocopies available to the public, including setting a statutory fee (perhaps at $1 per page) or setting the fee at a percentage of the certified fee. The full text of Ohio HB95 can be found at: http://www.legislature.state.oh.us/BillText125/125_HB_95_PH_N.html It is a very large page. Use your Internet browser to find 3705.22 (3705.24 immediately follows.) The bill has passed the House, and has been forwarded to the Senate, where the Finance and Financial Institutions Committee is hearing testimony. Links to contact information for the members of the Ohio Senate can be found at: http://www.senate.state.oh.us/senators/by_name.html Members of the Finance and Financial Institutions Committee are: Bill Harris, Chair Ron Amstutz Louis Blessing John Carey James Carnes Eric Fingerhut Randy Gardner David Goodman Jay Hottinger Jeff Jacobson Mark Mallory Ray Miller C.J. Prentiss Even if you do not live in Ohio, there is nothing to say that you cannot contact any member of the Ohio Senate or the Ohio House and tell them how the language in sections 3705.23, 3705.24, etc. would affect you.
